Death of 86-year-old brings Antigua COVID deaths to 14

An 86-year-old woman over the weekend became the fourth person to die from coronavirus complications within a 24-hour period.

A statement received from the hospital on Sunday confirmed that the elderly woman, who had a previous medical history, died at 11:45 pm on Saturday after testing positive for the virus.

The news came mere hours after the hospital revealed that a second female, a 57-year-old woman, died around 9:08 pm also on Saturday.

The third patient, a 77-year-old passed away at 12:15pm on Saturday.

The hospital said all three females, had underlying medical conditions.

A 68-year-old man also died from the virus on Friday.

He was admitted on February 10th and had been in the hospital’s ICU on a ventilator until his death.

This most recent fatality brings to 14 the number of deaths on record so far.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s Medical Director, Albert Duncan, told the media on Friday that while there is a human resource challenge, the medical staff are trying their best.

Forty people are currently receiving care at the hospital.

Antigua and Barbuda currently has 367 active cases of the virus with the addition of 50 new infections as of Saturday.

The hospitals in Antigua and Barbuda remain under lockdown catering only to emergencies. Schools are still closed and a number of businesses have not been able to reopen as their staff were infected by COVID-19.

Antigua and Barbuda has also been placed on a high risk level by most countries in the Caribbean including Dominica.

Last week, the Gaston Browne administration rolled out its national immunization program. Health care workers and government officials are now being vaccinated.

The vaccines are from AstraZeneca, a gift of 5000 from the Roosevelt Skerrit administration.

The government in St Johns say they are expecting close to 100,000 more vaccines from China, Russia and Cuba combined.

Residents on Barbuda say they are fidgety about taking vaccines from these socialist countries.
