Chuck Norris, legendary American martial artist and movie star, has died at 86.
His family announced today that he died yesterday, Thursday, March 19.
Born Carlos Ray “Chuck” Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, he was the son of a homemaker mother and a martial artist who served in World War II and later became an action star in Hollywood.
An NBC News article said that he subsequently enlisted in the United States Air Force and began practicing tang sang do, a Korean martial art. Upon returning to the United States, Norris competed in various martial arts tournaments, securing several major titles.
Norris built a reputation as a trainer to celebrities in martial arts. He went on to develop a friendship with Bruce Lee, which led to his debut acting role as Lee’s opponent in “The Way of the Dragon.”
His appeal crossed international borders to Dominican audiences through his portrayal of the action hero in movies that were some of the first and most popular American entertainment imports during that era.
Norris had an eight-year run on the CBS series “Walker, Texas Ranger” and also gained fame as an internet meme. In more recent years, he reportedly became increasingly involved in conservative political circles.
He is survived by his wife, Gena O’Kelley, along with five children, including actor Mike Norris and former stock car driver and stuntman Eric Norris. He was previously married to Dianne Holechek.
