Alessandra Benjamin, Rebuild Dominica board member and daughter of former Dominican UN Ambassador, passes suddenly

The organization Rebuild Dominica Inc. has announced with deep regret the sudden passing of Alessandra Benjamin, a valued member of its Board of Directors. The announcement was made by LaDàna Young (née Drigo), the current President of the Board, in conjunction with other board members, supporters, and members of the Dominican community in the Washington D.C. area. A release from the group reports that Alessandra Benjamin passed away on June 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication, talent, and humanitarian commitment.

Born on February 23, 1966, in Rome, Italy, Alessandra Benjamin was the beloved daughter of the late Dr. McDonald Benjamin, of Coulibistrie, a World Bank executive and former Dominican Ambassador to the United States. She was also the daughter of Hannelore “Angela” Benjamin, who served as Dominican Ambassador to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Benjamin’s educational journey took her from New Hall Boarding School in Essex, England, to St. George’s High School in Rome. She later attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1988, with a specialization in graphic design.

According to her Rebuild Dominica colleagues, she was recognized for her diverse talents and compassionate nature, as well as her interest in humanitarian efforts.

Her passion for the arts led her to pursue postgraduate coursework in graphic design, establishing a foundation for her professional career.

The release further revealed that in addition to her artistic pursuits, Alessandra was involved in acting, as a member of SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). Her on-screen appearances included roles in films such as “Shuffle,” “Yeye,” “Diary of a Tired Black Man,” “If Love Hadn’t Left Me Lonely,” “On the Edge,” “American Tragedy,” and “The Haunting.” Her vibrant screen presence was complemented by her dedication to humanitarian causes, reflecting her commitment to making a positive impact.

Professionally, Alessandra distinguished herself as a freelance graphic designer working with the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C. She later expanded her career internationally, serving as an Art Director for prominent multinational advertising agencies, including Young & Rubicam and J. Walter Thompson in Germany. Her approach to advertising was described as innovative, reportedly contributing to high-profile campaigns with a global reach. Furthering her education in film, she earned a Diploma in Film Direction from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and immersed herself in the film industry.

Her family includes her brother, Dr. McDonald Benjamin, also a former World Bank executive, her niece Nina Benjamin, and her sister-in-law Adriana Benjamin. She is remembered fondly by the Christian community of Maryland, as well as numerous family members and friends who cherish her memory.

Her family, friends, and the broader community she served, expressed that her passing represents a significant loss. Alessandra Benjamin’s life was characterized by a steadfast commitment to her roots, her artistic talents, and her humanitarian efforts.
