Family members of the Former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alix Boyd-Knights, have confirmed her passing to Dominica News Online (DNO).
According to one family member, Boyd-Knights passed away earlier today, August 29, 2023. As of the time of the interview, the cause of her death remained unknown.
Having sat in the Speaker’s chair for nearly two decades, she was awarded the distinguished title of Speaker Emeritus in 2020. This revered honour was bestowed upon her during the First Meeting of the First Session of the Tenth Parliament, on February 10 of that year.
An attorney by profession, Boyd-Knights secured her initial election as Speaker on April 17, 2000, a position to which she was re-elected on July 27, 2005; February 4, 2010; and February 20, 2015. Her third re-election in 2010 led her to become the longest-serving Speaker in Dominica’s storied history.
Boyd-Knights’ influence extended beyond the confines of the parliamentary halls. In 2010, she was nominated by the Roosevelt Skerrit-led government to assume the presidency of Dominica, poised to succeed Eluid Williams upon the expiration of his term in October of the same year.
However, the move encountered vigorous opposition from the United Workers Party (UWP).
The academic journey that paved the way for Boyd-Knights’ career includes Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad and Tobago (1988-1990) Certificate of Legal Education; University of the West Indies, Barbados (1986-1988) LLB Hons.; University of the West Indies Distance Learning Programme, St. Lucia (1984-1986); Leeds College of Technology, England (1962-1963); Convent High School, Dominica (1953-1960), Senior Cambridge Certificate.
Boyd-Knights’ professional journey spanned various roles and accomplishments which include, Chairperson, Commonwealth Women Parliamentarian (CWP) (2010); Chairperson, Constituency Boundaries Commission; Attorney-at-Law/Owner, Knights Chambers, Dominica; Owner/Tutor, Knights Cookery School, St. Lucia (1972-1986); Home Economics Teacher, Castries Comprehensive School, St. Lucia (1971-1972) and Bank Clerk, Royal Bank of Canada, Dominica (1960-1961).
My condolences to the family of Ms. Knight. I attended the CHS with Alix and have many fond memories of our school days. Even in those days, she always spoke her mind and one knew exactly where one stood with her. She had the courage of her convictions and was not shy about making her views known.
Sadly, some of our comrades have passed on and those of us who are left do not want her good to be interred with her bones.
Rest in Peace Madame Speaker
The “Fat Lady” have finally sing
Yes, Dominica has lost another stalwart, a true patriot and champion for women’s rights. Thank Madam Speaker. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us. May you be comforted in your time of grief.
Prob 11:10 “When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices;”
Today should have been a National Day of rejoicing so people could practice the above scripture
As a woman she served Dominica well and females should see her as a role model or one of our role models in Dominica in a world where women are seen as the lesser and weaker one in the professional world.
She attained what women elsewhere only dream of and it is available to us
Sorry I accidentally cut off the bottom part of verse 10, so here it is in its entirety Prov 11:10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices;
And when the wicked perish, there is jubilation.
Today should have been declared as a National Day of celebration or jubilation if you will
Condolences to the family of Ms Knight.
You,go to hell will die before DLP get out of power. You already are a miserable and suffering human being.
When the “Rest” go matching in, I don’t want to be in their number.
Highly partisan, she’s yours, only if you force Dominica we will morn.
My deepest condolences to Hon Alibaba and his forty thieves. She is a big loss for them
Sincere condolences to her children, grandchildren and the rest of relatives, friends and loved ones from all of us in St. Lucia. She was our Home Ec teacher at the Castries Comprehensive Sec School in 1971 and 1972. She was like a mom to us, spoilt us with food and even took us to her home and spoilt us more. She was a great teacher, counselor and even friend to some of us. We were elated at her accomplishments in her homeland Dominica, and were very impressed by some of them. We are sorry to hear of her passing and pray for loved ones that God, the father of all comfort, will strengthen and console them during this difficult time of bereavement.
RIP MADAM SPEAKER
At the end of the day all she will get is a mighty big state funeral like the Rich man of Luke 16:22
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
I would much rather get a poor man’s funeral and be transported by angels into Abrahams bosom. We will not always have a house to try to destroy good people just to promote an evil man and an evil culture
Pass we passing and at the end our rope no matter how long it is must come to an end. I hope this lady has peace in her heart. Anyways I will more remember her for evil she did to help Skerrit destroy our country. I really cannot think of any good she did that she could take with her
Shocking news….. an unexpected loss. She was such an amazing personality who left footprints of such significance that they need to be treasured.
May she rest in peace.
This is one of Dominica’s most illustrious daughters. A powerful lady who lived her entire life as a feminist. Rest in peace, madame speaker.
She, for sure, was somebody that contributed heavily to the demise of our beloved country. It will never be the same.
All these accolades means nothing when you served as part of a demonic, greedy vicious, self serving cabal that lied, cheated and enslaved your people. I fear no man so will say it loud; it looks like Pastor Parillon’s prayers have started working wonders. The question is: who is next?
A firecracker she was, and I liked her! Look how the heavens opened up and wept for you today!
I don’t know where you live, probably at Morne Daniel. Any way, the heavens where I live didn’t open up and wept but rather I can report bright sunshine. This is one woman that is partly responsible for the state our country finds itself in today. She didn’t contribute anything but she took a lot and in doing so aided the CM’s politics of division.
Keep checking on crooked Rishi Sunak. His days are numbered. All his misdeeds and crookedness are beginning to surface one by one. His party is in deep trouble. His MPs are resigning one by one. Skerrit remains indomitable and invincible. Extend your condolences to her relatives and stop being an anathema.
You appear to be fascinated by Sunak. Do you fancy him? Personally, I have no time for him since he is the leader of this ugly Tory Party that brought so much misery to the UK. Perhaps this is the exact reason for you to be fascinated by this man. Johnson, Trump, Truss, Skerrit… they are people you can identify with and shameless as you are, you even do it publicly on a daily basis.
The Evil system is falling one by one but soon we shall hear of the big fall. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.” Ps 91:8
It is unfortunate how politics brings out the non human in us.
YOU and your fellow Skerrit worshippers are prime examples!!
Becareful what you wish for, it might be you next with your tongue hanging out off your backside.
I will never rejoice over a person that’s passed but will be happy when people have been delivered from demons. RIP Ms knight and my condolences to all
