The medical fraternity is in a state of mourning following the homicide of Dr Velma Valmond, Dominica’s 17th homicide victim of 2022.
The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force has confirmed that it is investigating the incident which occurred on Friday morning, December 30, 2022, on Jewel Lane in Goodwill.
“At about 11:10 a.m [on Friday], police officers responded to a report of domestic violence between a woman and her boyfriend and on arrival at number 4 Jewels Lane in Goodwill, the officers found the lifeless body of 35-year-old Velma Valmond of Sinekou, the Kalinago Territory on the bathroom floor in a pool of blood with a severe laceration across her neck,” Police Inspector, Fixton Henderson reported.
He said the victim was examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor and her body was transported to a funeral home awaiting an autopsy.
“Velma’s boyfriend Alexan Alexander, 32 years old from Mahaut was also met on the bathroom floor with frothing from his mouth and in a state of distress,” Henderson further stated. “He was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Dominica China Friendship Hospital and is in a stable condition.”
The police officer also revealed that the deceased Valmond’s 18-year old daughter is also nursing injuries which were apparently sustained during the incident and is also in a stable condition at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital.
According to information which Dominica News Online (DNO) received from police sources shortly after the incident, it is believed that Valmond was killed by her boyfriend who also injured the teenaged daughter.
Reports also indicate that following the incident, the assailant who is employed as a security officer, attempted to take his own life.

I have seen this guy physically abusing a woman before , dressed for “jump up” with a camepak on his back. The police came , took him and left . He was released pretty soon after without charge. If an example was set then who knows he could have learnt his lesson . The system has failed another woman!

Dominica is finished. Absolutely done. I was just thinking about the justice system needing a rehaul, including looking at the laws, punishments, investigators and equipment provided to them to be effective at their job. Too many police are close friends with killers and drug dealers. Too many kids being molested by people in their household. Too many women being beating without a voice or escape and too many murders going unsolved. The comfort of criminals can be compared to me going to bed. There is zero justice in Dominica. The crazy thing is, if you want justice, you may well have to deliver it yourself. A road that only ends with someone else delivering justice on the person who created their justice in the first place. Dominica need a harrrrd reset. We are in termoil and it might just be too late to turn it back.
