Half a year after a ceasefire was declared in Gaza, the situation for women and girls remains dire, with urgent humanitarian needs and only fragile signs of recovery.
A new report from UN Women indicates that more than 38,000 women and girls were killed between October 2023 and December 2025. Of that total, over 22,000 were women and 16,000 were girls—amounting to an average of at least 47 deaths every day.
UN Women says that even though the ceasefire was announced in October 2025, recent accounts show that violence has not completely stopped. Women and girls are still being killed, pointing to continued dangers despite the agreement.
The report, titled The Cost of the War in Gaza on Women and Girls, also states that close to 11,000 women and girls have been injured, many suffering life-altering disabilities. According to UN Women the real figures may be even higher, as numerous bodies are still trapped beneath rubble and the collapse of health data systems has made it difficult to properly document casualties.
“The impact of the war on women and girls has been devastating. On top of the massive death toll, the war has reshaped families, with tens of thousands of households now headed by women. Many face increased economic hardship and heightened risks while carrying the full burden of caregiving and survival”, said Moez Doraid, UN Women Regional Director for the Arab States.
Doraid added,“We need to see the ceasefire in full effect, with full compliance with its terms, respect for international law, strengthened accountability, and the protection of women and girls alongside unimpeded humanitarian assistance at scale. Women and girls must be at the centre of response and recovery, and meaningful participation in peacebuilding and reconstruction”, said Doraid.
On the ground, UN Women states that it continues to work alongside women-led and women’s rights organizations in Gaza, offering financial support, coordination, and technical expertise.
Together with other UN bodies and humanitarian partners, efforts are reportedly ongoing to reach women and girls with critical aid, while ensuring they have a voice in recovery, reconstruction, and decision-making processes.
