Tragic incident mars Labour Day celebrations in Antigua and Barbuda

Labour Day celebrations in Antigua and Barbuda took a heartbreaking turn when a woman tragically lost her life while attempting to board a trailer truck. The victim, identified as Allissa Chiddick from Martin’s Village, was fatally injured in the incident that occurred on Monday, May 5, around 4:00 PM.

According to reports, Chiddick was trying to board the vehicle as it traveled west to east along Fort Road, near the Millaz Beach Bar and Restaurant. In a tragic accident, she fell beneath the rear wheels of the trailer truck, sustaining severe injuries. Emergency personnel pronounced her dead at the scene approximately an hour and a half later, at around 5:30 p.m.

Authorities have stated that a postmortem examination will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Police Administration expressed deep regret over the tragic incident, extending their heartfelt condolences to Allissa Chiddick’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

The community is left mourning the loss of a life cut short as they reflect on the day’s events that were initially meant to celebrate workers and their contributions.

Sad indeed, especially in her case leaving at least two children I know off behind! I don’t think it’s wise for anyone to try and board a moving vehicle, for the obvious reason.
We did that in Dominica when I was a kid, we termed it “hopping” unto the old wooden box Bedford trucks.

Truly sad! We in the Caribbean are too lax when it comes to safety measures. We have to do much better.

Profound condolences to the immediate family of the dearly departed. This may be almost inconsolable to you all. May the many bright moments that she has left behind keep your sort buoyant.
