A farmer from Marigot has confirmed that he is going to contest the upcoming general election in the Marigot Constituency as an independent candidate, saying that he is not going to allow the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) to win the constituency by default.
Anthony Charles is firmly opposed to the boycotting of the election by other major political parties saying it was the main reason why he was contesting as a candidate.
“Marigot needs to be democratic,” he told Dominica News Online. “By boycotting the election, Marigot will not be democratic, I am not going to allow that to be. We have to take part in the election. The Marigot Constituency is not going up unopposed. They are not going to win Marigot by default.”
Charles said he was encouraged to contest the election by the people of the constituency, especially supporters of the United Workers Party (UWP).
“The voters of Marigot, the youth, approached me and said they are not leaving Marigot as a docile constituency,” he remarked.
He pointed out that UWP supporters were instrumental in pushing him into his decision, since the constituency is overwhelmingly UWP.
“It’s the Workers supporters that pushed me to do that,” he remarked. “It’s not really my own endeavor that I just got up and say I am going to do that. It’s the support on the ground and Marigot is a UWP haven.”
He said his strategy for the election is going to be simple.
“I am not going to ask for nothing because everything the village needs was already presented to the government for the last 20 something years,” Charles explained. “So it’s nothing new I am coming with. I just want to make sure that what they start, they finish it.”
He believes the DLP candidate for the constituency, Gregory Riviere, is not “outspoken enough.”
“And I realize the helm of the Dominica Labour Party took advantage of that,” he stated. “He is not an outspoken person. He taught me in Grade Six, so I know him.”
Charles stated that the majority of his supporters are opposed to the boycotting of the election by the other political parties.
“A lot of independent workers and self-employed people who were supporting the UWP said they are not in support of this boycotting of this general election,” he said.
He said that he is not new to politics since his father, Richard Charles, contested the constituency on a number of occasions on a DLP ticket.
He even claimed that a number of DLP supporters in the constituency wanted him to contest it during the last general election “because it’s Richie’s child,” but the prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, was not in favor of it.
“So I left that alone and I took out the red stain on me,” Charles said. “It was a stain on me in the village and the only thing to take it out was to join the UWP, although I really didn’t join them, I just voted for them.”
Charles is confident that he will bag the constituency.
“I am going to win the seat,” he said. “It’s not an if or maybe, I am going to win the seat.”
The UWP has consistently won the Marigot Constituency since the 1990 general election when former prime minister Edison James grabbed it from the Dominica Freedom Party’s, Pattison A.S. Stevens.
Charles is not the only person who has come forward to contest the election, which is slated for December 6, as an independent candidate.
Attorney, Wayne Norde, has already made known his intention to contest the Roseau South Constituency and has held a motorcade and public meetings.

As a UWP from 1990 I am very disappointed that our party took a decision to surrender Marigot and Salisbury to Skerrit.
Mr Charles I fully endorse you and hope we can get someone in Bawi and Roseau north to do the same. In fact I wish we could get independent candidates to run in every constituency.
Our party is strong with very capable men and women that can turn things around in Dominica but alas, we very weak in strategy. We all know Skerrit is stealing elections but what ground work have we been doing? From the 2019 election how many new voters we registered in seats that were marginally stolen from us? Did we even have a presence there? If we were busy registering new voters, encouraging laborites to switch, encouraging our supporters in the diaspora to come vote while and warn AA about the risk of flying Skerrit’s chartered flights during our election, no doubt we would beat Skerrit. His defeat started when it became clear that 12 of his ministers didn’t like where he was taking Dominica and to cover his naked he fired most of them and left people like Greta, Octavia and Chekira hanging on a very thin branch as he tries to get independent candidates to go after them.
This was our opportunity with his 9 preschoolers that laborites don’t like because they understand the time.
Our party has seriously blundered and I hope this costly error doesn’t end the deliverance of Dominica from Skerrit and China.
I speak with tears in my heart because I see and hear the silent tears of laborites that were ready to vote Skerrit out no matter how many diasporas he brought down. Dominicans here know what they went through afte 2019 and those diasporas left a day after.

@ Roger I understand and respect your opinion but as a person on the ground I can say Mr Charles did the right thing and UWP blundered big time. In my opinion UWP chose the wrong battle and the wrong time.
Going back to the 2019 election that was no doubt badly stolen by Skerrit with his many dead voters that voted and number of Diasporas that were flown in it would be interesting to see how UWP narrowly lost the election despite the 18/3 results.
In Castle Bruce we lost by 36, La Plane by by 78, Mahault by 326, Grand fond by 42, Roseau Central by 193, Roseau South by 256, Salibia by 216, Wesley by 100, and Roseau Valley by 350. So we lost the nine constituencies that really matters in our election by a total of 1597. I submit that if UWP had done their homework from 2019 we would beat beat them. When we look at Mahault, La plane and St Joe Skerrit fired those candidates while in Wesley, Castle Bruce, Grand fond and Roseau South he intended to fire them. All 7 are shaking now
