Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Lennox Linton, has issued a call to the Dominican public to “stand down” from the upcoming general election scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, 2022.
His call was made recently during the ‘Workers Voice’ program aired on Q-95 Radio.
The United Workers Party (UWP) has decided not to participate in the upcoming election, describing it as fraudulent, and is convinced that Electoral Reform as demanded by the Dominican population is needed to facilitate free and fair elections in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
In a statement issued last week, the UWP said Dominicans cannot be asked at this time to participate in another national election without meeting at least two basic election standards: 1. A clean Voters List reflecting the persons who can legally vote; and 2. National ID Cards available to all legitimate voters.
“My advice to the people of Dominica is to stand down from this election,” Linton advised. “Leave it alone.”
He continued, “We in the United Workers Party have decided that we will not be contesting the elections and our advice to the people of Dominica is do not vote in this election.”
Linton further advised potential candidates from other parties, “do not participate either.”
He described the upcoming general election as, “Mr. Skerrit’s elections.”
“It’s not Dominica’s elections,” he remarked. “Let Mr. Skerrit have his elections by himself and the people who have chosen to join him. That is my advice…”
According to the Opposition Leader, “This is not about political parties anymore, this is about Roosevelt Skerrit against the people of Dominica and their electoral process which he believes belongs to him and therefore he can do what he wants with it…”
He added, “It is not about Mr. Skerrit, it’s about Dominica, it’s about Skerrit trying to take Dominica’s right to elect its own government away from Dominica, and when that happens, Dominica must respond.”
Linton said every Dominican individual and institution who believes in what the UWP stands for, who believes in a Dominica for all Dominicans, “will understand what we are talking about and [I’m] suggesting tonight, that this election of the 6th of December is Mr. Skerrit’s election and he should be left to participate in it by himself.”
Furthermore, Linton said to let the record show that others did not participate.
“Let the [record] show that this is what it was. It was a Mr. Skerrit election,” he reiterated.
Elections are constitutionally due in a few years, Linton pointed out, “and we will have [the] elections a few years down the road with reforms…that is what we stand for and that is what we move ahead with.”
Meanwhile, Linton revealed that he has written a letter to the President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin, expressing his concerns and has asked for the President’s action in this matter as a need for him to stand by the people of Dominica.
All 23,643 voters who voted DLP in 2019 and more, are going to vote DLP on December 6 2022.

I am a person who have known you personally for many moons. But UWP need to come better than that. When you decided to step down, you put the party and the country at risk for what they are dealing with right now. You must have known that the Beast, called Skerrit would be waiting to prance on this opportunity. I wish that you all would have planned this better – if you stepped down with a leader to replace you and you present it with unity within your party, then the rest of the country would have some hope. But instead, there are too many vacancies and no one to put trust in.
While you advise not to participate, we need to hear what this will mean when Skerrit claims his win with no opposition. As an onlooker, this is a royal mess and quite frankly scary. Enlighten the people better than just saying not to vote. They need to know the ramifications of not voting; what they should expect and what else can be done to keep DA’s democracy alive.
Mr. Linton you are not a perfect man. You have your flaws like all of us. However, your words and public statements are always insightful, well measured and meant to bring about positive outcomes to unfair and volatile situations.
Your statement that the electors should stand down is valuable advice. Voting in this farcical snap election will only embolden Roosevelt to press his new harder on the necks of Dominicans. With bosom friends like Vladimir Putin (Russia), Xi Jumping (China), Bashar al-Assad (Syrlia), what else do you expect from this maniacal creature but lies, cruelty, avarice, selfishness, confrontation and destruction.

Our highest court, the CCJ said that the 2019 general election was “”TAINTED””” and other elections should not be conducted and held with such taints. All voters deserves to choose a government (who, let’s remember, is a servant to the public) in a genuine democratic way via an honest, unbiased and transparent voting system. Let’s not denigrate the important rights of the population to support a government party, who they feel will best serve the Country and its people as a whole, to basic rival gang rivalry language just because Dominica is a small Island with less than 70,000 residents. If the population wants electoral reform promised, they should get it, no question.

I’m not generally an admirer of Mr. Linton’s political style, but with this he is on point.
What is the one thing that leaders of political parties look forward for after their “victory” at the polls? They crave the congratulatory messages from international organizations and governments. That to them drowns any noise there may be of election fraud. and ultimately validates their victory.
If the DLP were to run against itself it would be hard-pressed to get any organization or government in the free world sending congratulatory messages. Rather we would see messages of concern of “the situation in Dominica.” Putting the legitimacy of any resulting government into question. This move by the PM may very well ignite his own eventual downfall.
