On electoral reform: UWP demands that PM furnishes 2023 report of observers from various regional bodies

Nicholas George

The United Workers Party (UWP) is demanding from Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, a report from the independent observers who were in Dominica to observe the national consultations on electoral reform in August 2023. Participating in that process were the observers from the Organization of American States (OAS), CARICOM Secretariat, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

“We are calling on the Prime Minister, from a United Workers Party standpoint, to make the report of the observers who observed the national consultations on electoral reform available, and to submit every recommendation that arose from the consultation from his end, and to appoint a broad-based committee to review all of that work and to advise the public on the recommendations coming out from their work that would advise the process to take legislation to Parliament,” Executive member of the United Workers Party (UWP), Nicholas George said while addressing a press conference held at the Garraway Hotel on Monday, “To date we have not received a report from any of the observers who observed the consultations,” George noted. “And I reasonably believe that the observers didn’t just sit in the consultations to warm a chair.”

George continued, “I believe they were invited to participate as they have been invited to observe elections and would have crafted a report and submitted that report.”

He added, “We have not received from the Prime Minister and his office a report that captures what took place in the consultation, and we have not heard from the Prime Minister on the recommendation that a broad-based committee should be formed with the Attorney General being part of that committee to review Sir Dennis Byron’s report as well as to review the recommendations that came from the consultations.”

George said the UWP has been advocating for electoral reform for many years, starting as far back as 2005.

“We are at a point, a dangerous point in the governance of Dominica, a very dangerous point. And some may ask why electoral reform? Why all that fuss about electoral reform? And we are not talking about the farm roads in Marigot or Colihaut, in Soufriere, Salisbury, and St Joseph,” he indicated.

Furthermore, he explained that electoral reform leads to the election of representatives who go to Parliament to pass laws to develop the economy of the country.

“And if the people elected to do so are being elected fraudulently or corruptly then their actions are likely to be fraudulent and corrupt,” George argued.

He stated that the UWP  has participated in Sir Dennis Byron’s consultancy, where they received his reports, phases 1 and 2, and also participated in the Dominica Labour Party consultation brought together by Prime Minister Rosevelt Skerrit.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), Bernard Hurtault said his party is in full support of the call for a report to be submitted following the consultations on electoral reform.

“We are at a point where the country needs serious rescuing and serious recovery and that’s what the DFC stands for,” he said. “We need to be transformative of how we think about politics in Dominica, we have to find new ways of cooperating, we have to find new ways of leading…”

He went on to state that there must be new concepts on how his party approaches politics in Dominica.

“But we need to also seize the moment to make it a transformative one that changes our political culture and our political future,” Hurtault stated.

I have become very tired of and annoyed at UWP members querulous complaints about nothing. These guys just want everything to slant towards UWP way. It is either their way or the Highway. A set of disgruntled bums. They remind me of Majorie Taylor Greene, the American female politician.

The only reason Skerrit is withholding this report because he has something to hide. This has been going on for the past 20 years. It’s time for us all to sent him packing.
