The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) joins the international community in observing International Women’s Day on [March] 8th, a day dedicated to honoring the contributions, achievements, and resilience of women around the world. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action“, calls upon us to take swift and decisive steps towards achieving Gender Equality.
As members of the trade union, we have a unique responsibility and opportunity to drive this change. Our collective strength and solidarity can break down the systemic barriers that women face in the workplace and beyond.
- Equal Pay and Economic Empowerment: We must continue to fight for equal pay for equal work. The gender pay gap remains a significant issue, and it is our duty to ensure that women are compensated fairly for their contributions. This is critical as many households in Dominica are female headed and very often women are largely employed in lower paying jobs. When more women join the workforce, society experiences economic growth, increased purchasing power and more gender diversity. Economic empowerment is key to achieving gender equality, and we must advocate for policies that support women’s financial independence.
- Strong Maternity and Pregnancy Protection: Women should not have to choose between their careers and starting a family. We must push for stronger maternity and pregnancy protections, ensuring that women can thrive in their professional lives without compromising their personal aspirations.
- Flexible Working Conditions: Flexible working should be the default in all jobs. By promoting work–life balance, we can create an environment where women can excel both at work and at home. This is not just a women’s issue; it benefits everyone in the workforce.
- Ending Precarious and Insecure Work: We must put an end to precarious and insecure work conditions that disproportionately affect women. Stable and secure employment is essential for women’s well–being and their ability to contribute fully to society.
- Women’s Health and Safety: The health and safety of women in the workplace must be a priority. We need to recognize and address the unique challenges that women face, from physical safety to mental health support.
- Ending Violence and Harassment: Violence and harassment against women in the workplace are unacceptable. We must create a culture of respect and zero tolerance for any form of abuse. This includes tackling sexism, racism, xenophobia, and discrimination against LGBT+ and migrant workers. In light of this, The DPSU will continue to advocate for ratification of C190.
- Increasing Women’s Leadership: We need more women in leadership positions within our trade unions and beyond. We need more than increased numbers. Women must reclaim their voice and speak up on pertinent issues that affect them and their families. By increasing women’s representation, we can ensure that their voices are heard and their perspectives are included in decision–making processes.
The Dominica Public Service Union publicly celebrates Dominican women from all walks of life, who continue doing whatever they can for the betterment of their families, communities and country.
Let us therefore reaffirm our commitment to gender equality. Let us accelerate our actions and work together to create a world where every woman can achieve her full potential. Our fight for equality is far from over, but with determination and solidarity, we can make significant strides towards a more just and equitable society.
Thank you Public Service Union for these assuring words. Your fellow Unions support you greatly on this initiative of congratulations to not only women in the workplace, but all women of the world. We know what women who are empowered can do and we are continuing to motivate all women to reach for the stars. Women do not be afraid to stand up to adversity. Women you are strong, in the Lord.
Congratulations to all women on this special “Women Day”.
