In the upcoming days, the newly elected executive of the United Workers Party (UWP) plans to hit the ground to not only engage all Dominicans but to also provide assistance to party and non-party supporters in various ways.
The political leader of the party, Dr. Thomson Fontaine made this declaration in a speech to supporters on December 11, 2022, in Salisbury, during the party’s 34th convention rally.
The economist said his party is dedicated to broadening its appeal and winning the support of the Dominican people. He stressed that “now is the time to grow our party, now is the time to appeal to the young and the old and the middle-aged to come on board and to help us build because we are building for the future.”
Dr. Fontaine disclosed that the party will undertake what they have dubbed an “all doors campaign” in the coming days, which will include members travelling to “every town, every village, and every corner of this country” as part of this campaign.
As the new team lays out their objectives and the vision for the future of Dominica, he vowed that they will meet with businesspeople, workers, farmers, housewives, police officers, students, teachers, nurses, and every other member of society.
Concerned about the wealth equity and well-being of party supporters, who the UWP leader claims continue to suffer from loss of jobs, housing, education, and other opportunities owing to their affiliation with the party, he declared that his team will strive to alleviate some of those “discriminatory practices” by providing a hand where appropriate.
The establishment of the party’s small business register is one of the ways it plans to do this.
As stated by Dr Fontaine, “We are inviting all the small trade and professional individuals to register with us. We need you to tell us what is your area of service you’re able to provide, we will compile those names into a business registry and make it available to our supporters across Dominica so that when they want work done they can look you up in this registry, call you and offer you a job.”
Aside from that, he made it known that the party will soon be announcing several other programs and initiatives for small businesses that would help all citizens create jobs.
Additionally, the opposition party wants to increase the amount of agricultural produce that is exported and bought by consumers in domestic and foreign markets and will therefore be working to make this a reality.
The establishment of a dedicated fund to aid in funding scholarships for deserving students across the island who wish to attend the State college will be another objective of theirs.
Dr. Fontaine disclosed that in his capacity as the head of the opposition, he has already contacted two organizations to identify where they may be able to source a small grant financing in order to bring those plans to fruition.
He said that preparations are being made to contact friendly governments as well as anyone else willing to help with this effort.
While expressing gratitude to those who have already offered assistance, he adds that the party would be asking Dominicans who reside abroad to extend a helping hand to those who are in need on the island.
“To our many friends in the diasporans, I make a special appeal. We are not asking for a fish but we are asking for the hook, the lines and the net that will enable us to put this project to work. That will enable us to complete those small projects and will enable us to provide some relief for our people,” he said.
He underscored that the 34-year-old party will seek the resources required to enable its members to look after those who are less fortunate or simply in need of some aid, especially the elderly.
Dr. Fontaine continued by urging all residents to set aside their differences and cooperate to improve the nation.
“Let us not view each other as political opponents but view each other simply as Dominicans. Let us lend a hand to each other, let us support each other, let us encourage each other and let us be there for each other,” the UWP leader pleaded.
“There is a fight that must be fought and it is bigger than any one party,” he added.

For a self proclaimed top notch economist, Thomson haven’t convinced anyone that he can offer anything new to Dominicans if his party is elected in five years time. By then the international airport will be in full swing. Jobs, businesses, the economy will be booming. Farmers and other small businesses will be able to get their produce to an expanded international market faster and more efficiently. There will be more hotels constructed, more stay over tourists coming in along with more yachts and cruise liners visiting for shorter stays. The vendors relying on tourism will be overwhelmed. So what new Thomson will be able to counter that. I suspect that by then Thomson would have probably flown abroad to make his money as he does and leave UWP in the lurch again.
