ANTIGUA: A former opposition member becomes the first independent MP to join the gov’t

Anthony Smith being sworn in

Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape has seen a significant change as former opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Anthony Smith, became the first Independent MP to join the executive.

Smith, who represents All Saints West, was sworn in as Minister for Agriculture, Land, Fisheries, and the Blue Economy shortly after resigning from the opposition United Progressive Party.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed his confidence in Smith’s capabilities during the swearing-in ceremony.

Smith stated that he was totally committed to making a significant contribution towards the advancement of his constituents and the people of Antigua and Barbuda in general.

Browne also suggested that Smith’s previous political environment was detrimental to his growth, describing it as “toxic” and hindering his development. He commended Smith for seeking greener pastures to better serve his constituents.

Addressing his decision, Smith emphasized the importance of national development, acknowledging that while some people may be hurt by his choice, he was elected to serve and lead the people of All Saints West and Antigua and Barbuda as a whole.

This unexpected political shift poses questions about the changing dynamics within Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape and the potential implications for both the government and opposition moving forward.

This guy is most treacherous. The UPP should be thankful he left the time he did. He contested for the chairperson of the UPP while in bed with the ALP. If he had succeeded he could have done irreparable.

God does not like ugly and this con artist would be punished in the due course of time. His day of reckoning is on its way.

This is a classic case of money over integrity. Judas sold his soul for thirty pieces of silver, this imposter sold himself for ECD $6M.

Men like him would sell his parents into servitude once the price is right. This con artist deserves his voters collective scorn. Should be treated like the PARIAH that he is.

for a story to do what it was meant to do, it must be comprehensive. You appear to be very knowledgeable and well-informed, so I am sure you know that the UPP has a lot of infighting over leadership, just as is the case in Dominica and the UWP. These parties need to stop this petty power only and only then will headway.

I make no bones about this. Politicians are the absolute worst set of Leo
me on earth. Their only loyalty is to money and themselves. They are not to be believed.

Someone read a letter that this sleazy politician wrote excoriated the Antiguan PM and his party in the most derogatory manner. He swore he could never align himself to the Antigua Labour Party. Two days prior to his resignation letter he was with his former colleagues shoring up support for a UPP candidate.

My lesson is simply this. Most politicians are into politics for self- for personal enrichment. Most are not to be trusted. In fact, everything is changing. People are now taking their comedians seriously and their politicians as a joke.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 5 Thumb down 5
