Sir Ramez Fares Hadeed, a distinguished diplomat from Antigua and Barbuda, passed away suddenly at the age of 80 on Wednesday. He had been serving on the country’s United Nations delegation since 1981 and had also acted as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Syrian Arab Republic, the Republic of Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of diplomacy, he was awarded the Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation (KCN) in 2001 and was later knighted as a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation in 2022.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed his condolences, calling Hadeed a great statesman and noting that his passing was a loss for the country.
The government has announced that Hadeed will be given a state funeral, which is scheduled to take place on December 13, at 2 pm at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Cathedral on Michael’s Mount in St. John’s.
