Fourth HRP home handover ceremony slated for next week

Kalinago Territory Home

The Dominica Housing Recovery Project (HRP) has announced its upcoming fourth official handover ceremony that will take place at 10 a.m. on December 13, 2023, at the State House Conference Center.

According to a release by the government, the beneficiaries of the HRP programme will receive keys to their newly built homes at this ceremony. Of this cohort, 22 are identified members of the Kalinago community and 44% of the total grantees are women.

Under the joint auspices of the World Bank and the Government of Dominica, the HRP project provides resilient core homes with a floor plan of approximately 550 square feet to beneficiaries facing housing vulnerability. The emphasis is on servicing individuals and families displaced by Hurricane Maria. The government also states that the project, which falls under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development portfolio, focuses on” encouraging resilient building practices” and “facilitating capacity building of local contractors.”

With the reported aim of delivering “a sense of security and hope that homeownership confers”, government has divulged that housing support exceeding XCD 27 million has been provided under the umbrella of this programme.

To date, 415 applicants have been enrolled and 215 have been successfully rehoused. Additionally, the project has also assisted 140 individuals with obtaining formal land ownership documents, as per report.

What are their internal design features and are there a range of options- photos and line drawings of room designs ect, are they a core design to accommodate future extensions?

These would be a valuable asset for other countries to adapt for their use where similar climatic occurrences have impacted on the housing.
