Kalinago Chief election gains momentum in Kalinago Territory

Outgoing Chief, Lorenzo Sanford

The Kalinago Election, when Kalinagos go to the polls to elect a Chief for the Territory, attracts an overwhelming interest among residents. Due in July 2024, this round of elections is fast approaching.

The “Carib Act of 1978 clearly outlines the powers of the Chief and the duration of his term as Chief, which is 5 years in the first instance. After serving a term, the individual can contest the Election for Chief as often as they wish”

The last Election was held in July 2019. Therefore July 2024 marks the end of the five-year term for the current Chief, Mr. Lorenzo Sanford. Many individuals are presenting themselves either on Social Media or by public announcement as a viable candidate for the Office. The changing of times have dictated a paradigm shift from men only to the inclusion of women .

This shift began during the last election in 2019 when for the first time a woman contested the election and only lost by three votes. Three women have made it known to the public that they intend to contest the upcoming election for Chief. Reports are that some Kalinagos are not eager to have a woman as Chief because of the long-standing tradition of male Chiefs. On the other hand, some are supportive of the idea because they see the value in women who can give above-average representation.

Historically, “Oubouto” was the Chief of the Kalinago Society. History relates, “There are three qualities that a Chief must have: to be a religious leader; be a warrior; and had to have killed several enemy warriors”. Due to these historical beliefs, women traditionally had a difficult time being accepted as “Chief”. The position of Chief is not hereditary, meaning that the position was not passed on from father to son. Instead, the Chief was elected on the basis of his power and bravery. The Office of Chief commands profound regard in Kalinago society. As a result, there was a constant rivalry for leadership.

Under British Colonialism, the title was recognized only as a ceremonial position. In 1953, the ceremonial Chief was changed during the reign of Whitney Frederick (1953- 1959), and replaced as part of an island-wide system of Local Government. For the first time, the Chief was elected democratically by the ballot. Modernization has changed the
role of the modern-day Chief. The concept of the ceremonial Chief is now history. Likewise, on election day, a woman could emerge as Chief and that would be recorded as history, setting a new precedent.

Given that the community now has higher expectations, they anticipate that a Chief be fluent in computer literacy, and communication skills, be an office and project manager, accountant, fund-raiser, problem-solver, diplomat, and much more.

This year, many are expected to turn out to elect someone who possesses an impressive skill set and would be able to champion their cause for respect and dignity as an indigenous people.

An unbiased, unpolitically aligned chief who is for his people and only for his people is whats needed. This last one was for himself and DLP and influenced by Cozier. We need a forward thinking chief who can identify international funding mechanisms for his indigenous people and work towards applying for them and drawing down the funds to develop the territory for generations to come. Not one that can only depend on government and be swayed and influenced and used by politicians as a puppet against the Kalinago people. the first people of our nation.

Roosevelt even has his filthy tentacles in this process. His corruption knows no bounds.

The United Nations its ranking according to its HDI (Human Development Index). St. kitten she was Reed #1 in the Caribbean and Antigua&Barbuda #2. Where does Dominica rank with its deteriorating healthcare and rising death toll?

The survey was done ranking 193 countries. The miserable life that resident Dominicans endure, it feels as though Dominica is rated #194. LEADERSHIP has flapped its wings and flew away with the Starboy of Stupidity in control.

    Long live my ancestors!!
Its time for the failed, like to drive current chief move on with his sewo gang. We deserve better and will do better this time around. The chief must also be willing to ask the SOS for our $10Million given to us by Mr. Chavez. Where oh where is our money? Unless someone make this a priority and be willing to take serious action including but not limited to shutting down the country I will not give my support. Enough is enough and its time for the Kalinago to rise because we can.

Skerrit tell the Kalinago people dont look for that US$10 Million. He say that money was used to help rebuild Dominica after Maria. Unfortunately, the Kalinago people have no indigenous financial institutions, therefore, all international money donated to the people is usually given to the government, and put in government aligned institutions, like NBD, AID Bank, if not put into the treasury. Long and short, mister hold that on all you. And God alone know what he spend that on.
