Mahaut health centre to be transformed into a health district equipped with a pharmacy and dental clinic says Parl Rep

Presentation of donated AC units to staff by Cassani Laville

Plans are presently in place to convert the Esprit-Murphy Health and Wellness Centre in the community of Mahaut into a health district, which will be equipped with a pharmacy and dental facility, according to Cassani Laville, the parliamentary representative for the constituency.

These comments were made by Laville, who is also the Minister of Health and Social Services, on January 13, while donating air conditioning units to the health facility.

As part of his ministry mandate, mission, and strategy, he stated, “Right now, we are a part of the wider Roseau Health District…and we want to ensure that we do all that we can to ensure that we are able to afford all our citizens best quality and quickest access to healthcare and healthcare services.”

And given that, the minister continued, “we want to ensure that with such a populous area like the Mahaut Constituency, we would like to offer more of our services to our good people from this area.”

He highlighted that the Mahaut health district’s limits would extend from the Hillsborough Bridge in the west to the Canefield Bridge near Autotrade and the Layou Park, Despo area in the east.

Before this can happen, renovations and enhancements will need to be made, including the addition of a pharmacy, which would make the centre a type three facility, according to Laville.

Therefore, he disclosed that a structure beside the health and wellness centre that can be retrofitted into a pharmacy has been identified.

As part of the government’s intentions to modernize the Roseau health centre, the health minister added that it is necessary to decentralize some of the services now provided there, including dental treatment.

In light of this, Laville revealed that plans are being made to transfer the current dental clinic from Roseau to Mahaut and that another building has already been inspected to house this facility.

“There is absolutely right now as far as I am aware no intention to move the equipment to Maahut and have them moved back, so this is a remarkable opportunity for us and that is part of the reset to ensure that we are innovative in our thinking and in our actions, to ensure that we benefit as much as we can so this is a start and I embrace this
opportunity right now,” he stated.

With more than 200 patients using the facility each month, the Minister said that the donation of the AC units will be helpful since providing health care shouldn’t just be about having high-quality facilities and services; but should also include comfort, overall wellness, and experiences of the patients using those services.

“We know we are not a cold country, we live in a climate where it can get very very hot and as part of resilience with these structures we are well aware that there is a lot of reinforced concrete and block work and so the building can get hot,” he stated.

Laville continued, “I know that fans and attention are being paid to airflow, but in health centres of this magnitude and service that we offer we need to operate at a higher standard.”

In light of this, he mentioned that one of the units will be situated in the doctor’s office and the other where the maternal clinic is being provided and the immunizations are also kept.

He continued by assuring the members of the community and the general public that in the upcoming months, all the rooms of the “soon-to-be health district” will be air-conditioned.

So the brand new health centre is already inadequate. Shouldn’t this upgrade have been part of the planning? Or was the health centre just an electoral gimmick? One thinks that long-term planning and foresight would have taken this upgrade into consideration, now taxpayers may be renting facilities for these proposed expanded services.

Transforming a health center into a health district sounds funny to my hearing but maybe it just me as I am not knowledgeable in matters of health. Nonetheless, in my basic understanding I would think it more prudent and beneficial if the Armour Hospital in Portsmouth was brought up to standard and the people of the north could be fully served, having to go to Roseau for major major health conditions. The minister starts with this childish behavior where ensuring electoral victory for himself is above national good. Fenella open your mouth.

He would need to do much more than his current boss to create sustainable good paying jobs on island that would employ thousands of young people and keep them off the streets. When people are gainfully employed, overall crime diminishes significantly. There is a solid correlation between unemployment and an uptick in crime.

And when this correlation is proven to be inaccurate by the number of “developed countries” where jobs are plenty but crime rates are rocketing, those who hold on to such invalid arguments have no credible response.
