PM cautions public to not delay electoral reform process by ‘unduly bringing up issues’

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has warned Dominicans that they should not delay the process of electoral reform for Dominica. He was speaking during the public consultation on electoral reform for Dominica at Salybia on Wednesday night. This brings to an end a series of public consultations giving Dominicans an opportunity to voice their concerns in discussion on the Dennis Byron Report.

“We should not seek to hold back the process of bringing in issues of constitutional reform that will require referendums, to cause there to be a delay in the implementation of some fundamental aspects of the discussions we will be having in Dominica,” Mr. Skerrit said.

He continued, “I am saying to us, be careful that we do not delay the process unduly by bringing up issues that we never raised in the consultations with Sir Denis Byron and then bring them as new issues in an attempt to hold back the process.”

The Prime Minister reiterated that personally he wants reform for Dominica and he “[wants] it fast.”

“The Government wants it like yesterday and the Labour Party wanted it in 2016,” he stated.

In fact, he suggested to the Dominican public that they should give consideration to the critical aspects of the reform and advance those.

Caribbean Jurist Sir Dennis Byron was tasked by the Government of Dominica to be the sole commissioner to advance efforts towards electoral reform in Dominica. His final report was presented to various groups and organizations including NGOs, media houses, churches, political parties, trade unions among others at a function held at the State House Conference Centre on Wednesday, June 21.

But the whole idea of having those meetings wasn’t to settle any and all issues???

    Garcan you not making sense!!!

You about to call another election man,,,

Is not those same people nuh that going to be affected when the reforms are finalized!!!

Skerrit garçan you are suppose to be of and for the people, and if the people have issues with the current contract that you about to finalize it’s their prerogative to address those grievances sooner than later,,,

How about you do this Skerrit lets just at list Purge the Voter Registration list and lets just do this for now: Remove all those people that have passed away and is no longer alive from the List,,, Lets just do that to start,,,

One thing you have to respect the cojones on this man talking about they want reform fast “like yesterday” since 2016 even though they delay the process over and over including adding undue changes (like basically making bribery and treating legal) which caused the process to be delayed because there was no way the reform was going to go through with those provisions

Why you guys write such thoughtless nonsense, do you know how Laws are written. Do you think that the Government can just write Laws obituary to suite them, I’m referring to your statement suggesting the Government making a Law legalizing bribery and treating legal, wow, such foolishness is only perpetrated by your
political partisan beliefs, be content with your belief and your silliness

Skerrit your acolytes , henchmen and apologists are doing just that, reading from scripts prepared and given to them, to humiliate themselves and their families, because they want to maintain Skerrit’s re-election winning legacy, as written in the infamous e–mail of 27-03-2008 by Anthony Astaphan, and addressed to Roosevelt Skerrit.
It would appear that the Skerrit chorale singers want the system as is, to maintan the status quo of BRIBING, STEALING AND CHEATING..
Hope every citizen of Dominica who loves this little rock will say an emphatic NO to that!!
Once again having or building a house or indeed1000 houses in Dominica, or sending 1000 000 barrels to your granny are not voting criteria.. Rather, you must be 18 years and over, and be living/ domiciled in your constituency 3 months prior to polling day.

Skerrit, how do you know? Do you have you personal CIA at the meeting to spy on people and intimidate them? I wouldn’t be surprised, this just is your trade. BTW thanks for giving me a good laugh: you want the election reform fast (you had over 20 years), the Government wants it like yesterday and the Labour Party wanted it in 2016. What a brutal JOKE. This man doesn’t stop at anything anymore. Then again it’s not only his political career at stake now but also his freedom and possibly he live. Simply put, he overplayed his hand.

I always knew that Satan, the liar and deceiver, who came not but for to STEAL, KILL and DESTROY according to Jesus in John 10:10 .
Now to the story. No wonder in the dying days of the consultation PM Skerrit called a press conference when all the observer missions had left the state and he told the press that he was now in favor of a voter’s I d card, though he always pushed for a national I’d. So Skerrit is now putting confusion in the whole thing and is now saying he doesn’t want delay. Skerrit stop this nonsense boy

When the UWP decided to boycott the 2022 sham elections of Skerrit that was a brilliant idea but execution was not good. Instead of saying they boycotting they should say they will participate and hours before the deadline on registration day they should just not register and give Skerrit all 21 seats since he wants to run his estate all by himself. In that case nobody would register as independent and Skerrit himself would be president, pM and opposition.
Now, since Skerrit is eager to bring electoral reform though only in mouth, I would give Skerrit what he wants and would agree with everything Byron put for him in the purchased Sir Byron report so Skerrit could have no one to blame for his no reform agenda. Please Mr Linton and UWP, take back all objections you echoed during the consultation so Skerrit could expose himself as the liar, deceiver, cheater and dishonest person he really is. This time I would also give him the coat too if he asks for the shirt according to Jesus.

Ideas evolve. If a new issue makes good sense, such as the one suggested by Cara Shillingford-Marsh, there is no reason why – given the will – it cannot be incorporated speedily.

…but Skerrit isn’t minded to have any of it. He knows that proper electoral reform (voters ID cards, limitations on the diaspora voting rights) equals his political death and possible his freedom.

Exactly right, in fact I will go further and ask to probe his behaviour in this matter. Could it be a criminal offence for a sitting PM to actively get involved in matters that concern the Electoral Commission?

Partner behave yourself sou-play before you cause Dominica to go into civil unrest. Your days for mamaguying our people are over.

Be warned yourself, if the reforms allowed does not address the grievances that has been plaguing our elections for years then I dare say KAI-POULE-KWAZAY!!!! You speak like you are the know it all and will do it all so your legacy can stay intact but we the people have had enough and no police force, Snipers, Navy Seals or RSS will keep us off the streets if provoked. I just dont understand what is the fight against voter ID cards! Give me a damn break. Just this one fight shows your intentions are no good and we the people will have none of it.

@BB I dare say it’s just mouth you people have. Big loud MOUT. When Henderson was to represent Grand bay you all were fired up in words saying that there is not going to be any bi-election and that the roads would be blocked, and dis an dat!!!! The Grand bay election was the quietest in modern memories. So don’t say it if you don’t mean it. Skerrit may call another snap election right under your nose. When men mean business and decide to revolt (for whatever reason) they plan in secret with proper objectives and wait for the appropriate time to execute their actions. So don’t go on DNO and brag without even having a plan; which I’m certain you don’t have. There’s no courageous man or woman still standing in Dominica. Else we would already be Freed from the tyranny type government. So my brother, don’t be like “Hand Bag” of Grand bay whose strength lies only in his tongue.
