Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit joined his fellow heads-of-state, Dr. Terrance Drew of St. Kitts & Nevis and Phillip J. Pierre of St. Lucia, to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl in Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and parts of Grenada on Wednesday.
He also offered support to those affected following the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl.
“We discussed the regional response with Grenada’s Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell and assured him of our commitment to advocate for immediate action to combat the climate crisis,” he said during a Facebook post. “ I continue to emphasize the urgent need for climate justice that addresses the disproportionate impacts of climate change on our vulnerable Caribbean states.”
Skerrit continued, “We plan to conduct a similar mission to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the coming days.”
Hurricane Beryl has wreaked havoc across the Caribbean, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.
The Category 4 hurricane slammed into the islands of Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday, July 1, 2024, with winds reaching speeds of 240 km/h (150 mph).
According to reports from The Observer, in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the governments of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and Saint Lucia mobilised resources to support Grenada’s recovery efforts. This collaborative approach, Dr. Drew said, aims to ensure that aid is delivered swiftly and effectively to those in need.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Drew expressed his deep concern for the people of Grenada and the surrounding islands.
“The devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our region to natural disasters,” said Dr. Drew. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones and those whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. We are committed to providing immediate and sustained support to help rebuild and recover.”
The Observer report further stated that Prime Minister Dr. Drew also highlighted the resilience and strength of the Grenadian people, commending their spirit of unity and determination in the face of adversity.
“Together, we will rebuild stronger and more resilient communities. The Caribbean stands united in support of Grenada during this challenging time,” he added.
Further updates on the assessment and relief efforts will be provided as the situation develops.

‘Simon Springett, U.N. resident coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, said Beryl “disrupted lives at a scale and ferocity that is becoming all too common.”
The United Nations joined the plea for help, noting that US $5 million of the US $9 million requested would go to Grenada and the remainder to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a bid to help a total of 43,000 people.’
