The Government of Dominica is deeply saddened by news of the passing of former Speaker of the Dominica House of Assembly, Hon. Alix Boyd-Knights.
Hon. Boyd-Knights passed at her residence on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. Hon. Alix Boyd-Knights served as Speaker of the House of Assembly from 2000 to 2020. She is the longest serving Speaker in Dominica’s history and was named
Speaker Emerita at the end of her tenure.
She was a lawyer with special interest in the rights of women and children and was instrumental in the development of the suite of Family Laws passed in the Dominica Parliament in April 2023. She was diligent in promoting domestic violence laws to women’s groups; securing more adequate maintenance for children; and assisted in the passage of the Sexual Offences Act.
Hon. Boyd-Knights served as the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 2010-2013.
We honour her for her long and faithful service to the Commonwealth of Dominica and or her advocacy on behalf of the vulnerable. The Government of Dominica conveys deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family of Hon. Alix Boyd-Knights during this moment of grief and pray for solace and comfort in the Lord for all who mourn her passing.
She will be dearly missed.
