Dominican entertainer, Sukie, will spend the next six months in a Grenadian jail after he pleaded guilty to indecent assault on a minor.
He appeared in court on that island on Friday.
The entertainer, whose real name is Shane Edward, was accused of touching a Guyanese teenager living in Canada who was a guest at a resort on the south of the island.
He was a guest at the hotel awaiting to perform at a concert Grenada National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, November 26.
When he first appeared in court on November 28, he was denied bail.
Sukie appeared in court again on December 1 but the matter was set for Friday, December 2.
According to Grenadian law, indecent assault carries a maximum sentence of five years behind bars.
But when Sukie appeared in court on Friday, his attorney Jerry Edwin pleaded for a lesser sentence.
In mitigation he said his client is apologetic to the court, the victim and her parents for his behavior.
Speaking to the media after the court appearance, Edwin said the sentencing guidelines were the benchmark which the magistrate used to arrive at the sentence.
“The starting point was actually 18 months in prison but ultimately the magistrate, after mitigation, which we offered to the court, sentenced Shane Edwards, the artist Sukie from Dominica, to six months in prison,” he said.
He pointed out that no special treatment was given to Sukie and the case was treated with fairness.
“The court considered the all of the factors, as it normally does, it didn’t treat with this matter as anything more special or different,” he stated. “But I think the magistrate made an important point which I think cannot be understated. There are far, there are way too many cases involving sexual offenses of all types, from indecent assault all the way up to rape in our jurisdiction.”
According to Edwin, throughout the region there is an epidemic of sexual offenses and justice was served in the case of Sukie.
“The magistrate correctly points out that too many women, old and young, are victims,” he stated. “Many women do not come forward. These two young ladies did and one of them, who was actually indecently assaulted, 15 years old, made a report to the police. And so the magistrate has given us his sentence, we do not at any point ever disagree with justice.”
Sukie will now spend the next six months at the Richmond Hill Prison, in St George’s, Grenada.
That was a set up. How could he have done anything in plain public view, her father was there. that was a set up. either that or Sukie just doing fing live in public any how any way? i doubt is the latter.
Yet Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit dared to quote Sukie’s “Power Break-Fast” in our House of Parliament while his ministers laughed, including the women.
Dominica rotten from head to toe! I had at least three women complain to me that during the independence celebrations they were verbally abused by Dominican men telling them how they would like to “stretch their p***y musle” according to Sukie Burnbrain.
This is what our beloved island has become under PM Skerrit Labour while all moral authorities including the churces keep quiet or pray for Government money! God is not asleep. God cannot be fooled. You all bringing malediction and curses on Dominica! Dominica is now seen as an island of sexual perversion, vice and profanity, no law! How to destroy an island and have the people keep on voting for their own destruction!

In adversity comes opportunity. This chap looks quite different (in a good way) from the images I have previously seen of him. I pray that he finds his way to a healthy and peaceful life. Who knows? This incarceration might be his saving grace.

It’s bad to see he went to entertain and end up in jail. Knowing where Zukie came from to where he is today shows that people can change however, it still good to keep an eye on him as he recovering. Now, a message to Zukie’s promoters, whenever, Zukie get to perform either in Dominica or Overseas to the must effect keep him close to you guys and dnt let him go out of site. You the promoters will diffinitely look bad once this keep on happening. Zukie can take this time in jail to compose more music, but I still believe the arrogant type of music need slashing out. Because in some countries even the song he sings is a jail.
Sexual crime against any female is not something frivolous. The victims in this case sought justice and received it.
Sukie now needs to take a break from the entertainment business and use that prison time for serious self-rehabilitation.
I hope no other will exploit Sukie’s talent, but will offer him the help he needs for full healing.
Wow! Is it only in Dominica these cases seems to languish in the courts, while the perpetrators seems to walk freely only to reoffend again?
I know that area very well Richmond Hill is a beautiful place, whenever I am in Grenada at my friend’s house you can also see the Caribbean sea and the cruise ships in harbour and the prison Sukie, home for the next six months is at the top of the hill, Grenadian people always making jokes about the prisoners having the best possible views my advice to you Sukie, boy your behaviour is none acceptable you were lucky the Magistrate took pity on you order wise you would have gone down for five years.
The magistrate is contradicting himself by offering such a lenient sentence. One of the reasons for the epidemic of sexual offences in the region and for women not wanting to come forward is due to these ridiculous sentences being given to sex offenders. Why would a woman want to step forward and endure the pain of such a legal process only to have the accused back out in the community to continue what they do best in a matter of days, weeks or months?
