UWP economic conference set for June 4-6

UWP leader Dr Thomson Fontaine

The United Workers Party (UWP) Team Dominica has announced the date for its major economic forum this year.

Leader of the UWP, Dr. Thomson Fontaine said the event is set for June 4 to 6, and the party will focus on plans and ideas for serious growth in the economy.

“We are going to sit together, we will be inviting the government, the private sector, everybody,” he said. “We want to sit and discuss and plan the best way forward for Dominica.”

Dr. Fontaine continued, “We are about Dominica and Dominicans and we want the best for Dominica. we need your support.”

During a press conference held in February this year, Dr. Fontaine called on the general public to participate in the event.

“We will have an exhibition that showcases what is being manufactured here in Dominica and really give an opportunity to bring together both possible investors and those who want to do business in Dominica,” he explained. “Because what we are really trying to do even outside of government is to do something that can stimulate some form of economic activity.”

He believes that presently Dominica’s economy is in a very poor state, “people are hurting and they are suffering, and the more jobs that can be created [the better].”

In terms of a presenters list, he said the party will target some key persons in the different sectors of the economy, including the hotel sector, the tourism industry, and business owners.

“We are looking at really making it a huge event that can really be impactful in terms of bringing some focus on Dominica’s economy,” he stated.

A venue for the conference will be announced later.

Politicians telling people things they want to hear has been one of the oldest gimmick. The UWP is not in Power, it is easy to have all these grandiose Economic plans for the Country, they mean nothing. Where is the self introspection of the Party, as it relates to their repeated behavior of mischief and chaos a repeated practice with no results, and their in house diversion with leaders of egotistic behaviors that is where the focus should be. Coincidentally, look at the above picture of Thompson, a picture tells a thousand words, looks like he is disorientated. Let us hope that when such conference do take place that the all executives of the Party echelon will
be present, as they portray themselves, Team Dominica.

Of course he is the South Sudanese man with a dishonest record both in DASS and IMF.

I fully agree and absolutely commend this very prudent and sensible intiative laid out by Dr. Fontaine and team.

The clear manifestations of a lack of viable local small businesses and much needed job opportunities have been a commonplace and sad reality for too long in this potentially vibrant country.

Doing nothing is definitely not an option when innovative and motivated small business owners are having to close shop at an alarming rate, further deeping the ever growing unemployment crisis.

Locals and visitors struggle to find good dining options in an agriculturally blessed country where an abundance of good quality and nutritious food sources (including gluten-free) remain largely untapped.

A viable plan is certainly better than no plan. Dominicans abroad have long been lauded for their excellent work ethic. More should be done on the home front to leverage this capable and willing employment base.

      @ ds
Man chill out. Those things are not for you. Can you even understand what was said here?

Me, I am sorry, but it is just another waste of people’s time. Let us face it, nothing good is gonna come out of that shenanigan. Fontaine has nothing to lay down on the table. He is more theory than practical. So sad.

Thompson needs to be surrounded by people who have a knack for strategy, this meeting will be a bold new move. Go Fontaine, you are the man.

What economic forum? Another waste of people’s time. Fontaine got fired by the IMF, what has Fontaine got to offer? Nothing tangible and constructive. Same old garbage talk as always.

    • March 22, 2024

What strategy? Nothing is gonna change. Things will stay the same and get better under the Skerrit Administration. The UWP acolytes have nothing to offer but the same old song every time we hear it. A complete waste of time. You call Fontaine a good man. He was of no importance working at the IMF. Man, keep quiet.
