Celebrating a transformational Caribbean woman leader

The Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL) congratulates Prime Minister, The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, Q.C., M.P., on her recent national election win.  As Prime Minister Mottley embarks upon her second consecutive term in office, she has reiterated her government’s readiness to fulfil the mandate entrusted to them by the Barbadian people, and their commitment to tackling present and anticipated challenges while working towards meeting aspirations of sustainable development.

Ostensibly, the rallying cries are not very dissimilar to those heard across many other Caribbean countries. What does, however, distinguish Barbados, is the foundational ethic which discernibly drives the principal woman herself and which consequently permeates her government’s policies and processes. It is an ethic which CIWiL recognises as transformational leadership – an approach whereby one’s power, resources and skills are used responsibly within democratic, cooperative, inclusive structures to advance a vision of gender equality, social justice, and human rights for all. Within the past year alone – from UNGA 76 to COP26 to the handling of the COVID-19 crisis and Barbados’ transition to a Republic – Prime Minister Mottley’s focus on improving equity, wellbeing and quality of life and her propensity for building alliances on every front, leaves no doubts about her leadership.

Prime Minister Mottley’s people-centredness is core to the distinctiveness of her transformational leadership which benefits all of society. It is consistent with the broader, mounting recognition that women as a whole make essential contributions to achieving and maintaining peaceful and secure communities, the full realisation of human rights, the eradication of disease, hunger and poverty, and the promotion of sustainable development (UN 2018).  CIWiL’s congratulations to Prime Minister Mottley are thus accompanied by a confidence in her capacity for good governance, based on the transformational leadership she embodies.

We urge leaders in Parliament to live up to the call of transformational leadership by working collectively, despite their differences, to uphold the common principles of gender equality and human rights both in their service to country and within political structures. This includes acting to remove barriers to women’s leadership and uplift fellow aspiring sisters in politics. This will enable us to reach the critical mass required to effect economic, political, and social transformation in our wider Caribbean societies. As a non-partisan NGO established to support this very cause, CIWiL continues to offer our partnership to all Caribbean organisations, institutions and individuals with a shared transformational vision.

    Transformational leader my big toe. Peel away the outer leaves of the onion and see that Mia won an ill-timed election with the lowest turnout of registered and eligible voters in Barbados. What is transformational about that? We are at a point in the world where right is seen as no more necessary and winning any means necessary is the goal. One would have thought that with the advent of the world wide web it would have brought shenanigans out in the open and society would denounce the malfeasance in all forms but alas what has emerged is an embrace and glorification of in your face evil and evil doers . It’s called populism. Things happen in cycles and thus we have to wait for the teacher to arrive. Nothing is new under the sun and this embrace of winning by any means necessary will once again be replaced by the virtues of civility and honesty and decency.

    I was looking at the election results and the numbers are as follows:
    * Number of registered voters 266330
    * Voter turnout – 114035
    * Voted for BLP – 78720
    * Percentage of registered voters who voted for BLP – 29.56%
    This means that the BLP retained all 30 seats with less than 30% of the registered voters in the country. Why did so many eligible Barbadians not vote and what effect did that have on the outcome of the election?

    No doubt about it, Mia Mottley has distinguished herself with her sterling leadership so far. She is forward thinking, inclusive, visionary, courageous and articulate. Her objectives, aims, policies and vision exceptionally progressive.

    This is a refreshing and welcomed change from the crude, corrupt, cringe-worthy, caustic and cannibalistic politics as is currently practised by the present crop of Caribbean ‘leaders’ today.

    She has not only elevate Barbados to a Republic, she has offered the no-seat Opposition two senate seats and would make amendments to the constitution to nominate a citizen, as young as eighteen years, a senator.

    Mia Amor Mottley, you are undoubtedly the preeminent leader of the Caribbean region. Good luck Mia!

      You are nothing more than a razor blade! When Mia initially won the election that’s not the way you thought of her. Hypocrite!

      Listen to Bajans and they will tell you who Mia Mottley really is. You just keep spewing garbage on DNO, like Mia is your Queen. Most bajans would sooner let Mia do all the nonsense she wants to do to Barbados than to go out and vote, for whom? What makes you believe that Mia is a better leader than Skerrit. I guess you must be impressed with the space between her two front teeth. Unlike Dominicans, they all come out and vote for the Supreme leader, Skerrit. What sterling leadership are you talking about? Over 500 people and counting have been affected by Covid-19 in Barbados. Are you still in your slumber? Maybe I might get Dennis Joseph to wake you up from your sleep – Wake up, Wake up, top of the morning to you.

    I agree with everything said regarding Mia’s accomplishments and intentions.
    What I reject is that her being able to be this type of leader is based on the fact that she is a woman, and by extension putting other women in similar position would yield similar results.
    Mia’s special skills and level intellect, communicative ability, ability to retain and recall information with supreme accuracy and her consultant can do attitude that is alway present with a well constructed plan.
    I am sure there are other women with these attributes, but it isn’t all or most women, for that matter, and there certainly are some men who are just as capable. What needs to happen, is such people need to use those skills to convince all doubters in the way Mia has and continues to do. Mia had a difficult time getting acceptance as a leader in Barbados for several personal reasons. It took a decade for people in Barbados to look pass the superficial stuff and pay attention to her substance.

      Jr., I’m in full agreement with your criticism of the article but support everything else that was said about Ms. Mottley.

      This feminist agenda is becoming extreme. Right now, women do not have to prove that they are just as capable as men in almost every sphere of endeavour. There isn’t any need for the extremism.

      It seems as though these extreme feminists want to marginalize males by relegating them to the curb. Once we have the most competent persons, males or females, in every position of the public or private sector, I’m satisfied.
