Chinese National Xing Jianyong who was murdered in Portsmouth on February 4th, was laid to rest on Saturday, February 22nd.
Yong, age 49, was killed during a robbery attempt at his store in Picard.
The funeral service took place at the Living Word Covenant Church International in Picard and was conducted by Pastor Bernard Joseph.
Apartment owner in Picard, Patt Corbette, a close friend of the deceased, told Dominica News Online (DNO) that Jianyong was almost like a brother to him and his passing affected both him and the community.
On the day of his murder, Corbette said he was in tears because it was a tough experience for him.
He described Yong as “adventurous” and one who always smiled.
“We were very close, that’s where my children use to get their Chinese food a couple days a week…he was always smiling, very nice guy, all persons you talked to in the community loved him… we all miss him,” he said.
Vendors in the market in Portsmouth also expressed their sadness at his passing, especially with regard to the manner in which Jianyong was killed.
“He used to go down there every Saturday to buy his vegetables from them,” Corbette recalled.
Corbette hopes that justice is served because as he said, it was really tough for everyone who knew the victim.
Meantime, Emerlie Maxwell who was another close friend of Jianyong remembered him as someone who was motivational, had a great sense of humor and was a giving person.
She said she knew Jianyong from the time she started working at the River Side Hotel in 2018.
“He was always making little jokes…he had this favorite song ‘saltfish’ the song by calypsonian Sparrow,” Maxwell said.
She said when she heard the horrific news of his passing, she broke down in tears and didn’t know what to do.
“I got speechless…It was hard… he was this loving person in the community; everybody that comes there would always get love from him,” she said.
Maxwell sent her love to his friends and family in China and encouraged them to be strong during this difficult time.
Acting Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy in Dominica, Luo Songtao and the MP for Portsmouth Ian Douglas, attended the funeral service and delivered remarks.
The Parliamentary Representative for Salisbury, Hector John, also attended on the behalf of the United Workers Party.
About eighty people attended the funeral.

What a loss! This man was a hard worker, toiling 24/7. Even when you go out to party and you come home hungry you could stop by and have something cuz he was always open. This is not about Chinese, its about a human being killed for no reason but greed. It can happen to any other businessman in Picard. Look HHVW close down, this is fearful, thieves will get more desperate and as Picard becomes more like a ghost town crime will increase.So while we think he is just a Chinese, his death is a lesson, pay attention. It seems to be true that “Everybody” loved Zing Jian Yong, but “Nobody” has been able to identify that “Somebody” who was definitely a demon of darkness, to take the Life of such a loving person. Why does it always happen that way?
But let it be known to that “Somebody” of darkness it is not yet over for you, you damn coward! If you have not yet regretted what you did, your time is coming, a time for you when you will want the mountains to fall on you, but not even that will soothe the pain you will be suffering. I am saying that physical death for you, will not be the answer.

DNO thanks for sharing this news with us because I was wondering about the body of Mr. Young whether he was flown to China or they just buried him here especially with that coronavirus and China. So DNO thanks for not just telling us of his murder but for following through to his burial
