STAY WELL & SPARKLE: Hairy like a Fairy

Hairy Like a fairy

What is a Brazilian wax anyway?

Bondieu! Are you kidding me! Do that to any animal in the civilized world and you bound to get arrested for cruelty…

Can we talk calmly and scientifically about body hair, what is natural? What is refined? And what are the medical ramifications, if any, for men and women? Who said we should not shave nor wear antiperspirant? Why is it that a woman parading the beach with a neglected bikini line seems so severely scorned by the sisterhood? And why is it from most guys’ point of view, that’s no big deal. How is it that most hair removal leaves behind amazingly smooth and sensuous skin? And why do others develop bumps and lumps and get down in the dumps.

Rastas have an advantage. Being all-natural, they don’t waste money on razor blades and shaving creams. If Jah didn’t want us to have it, why would he put it there? Good point! No disrespect, but I wonder if some ever tire of carrying all those long locks around. Does it keep a lot of heat? Does the scalp ever want to free up itself a little bit – but that’s another story.

Professionally, I’d prefer no hairs on my chinny chin chin. However, I get shaving bumps so I savour a sabbatical more often than not. As a matter of fact, in the US Army, I had a ‘profile’ (medical excuse) allowing me to wear a beard. Yet one couldn’t help feeling you were still viewed with a jaundiced eye. It is as if you had not fully submitted that rigid military authority, one which reveres the gladiator oath, “We who are about to die, salute you.”

Some contend that the skin gets sensitized as an indirect consequence of children mimicking their parents. While little girls are tottering in their moms’ high heels, little boys rummage for their daddy’s discarded razor blades to scrape their chins.  The prevailing wisdom was: shave the fuzz and the beard will come faster. Since we could not wait to grow up, then I’m guilty as charged.

The fact of the matter is that this folliculitis barbae thing is very troublesome, especially among men of colour. It is clearly genetic. Men on the Delices side of my family, their faces shave as smooth as a baby’s bottom. On the Senjo side, shaving bumps have resulted in even in life-threating surgery. Which part? The back of the head is where the condition gets most resistant.

Like acne, products proliferate like benzoyl peroxide, shaving creams and ‘Bump Patrol etc.’ The list goes on. In my experience, they may work for a few rounds of shaving, then comes the suffering with ugly, painful bumps that takes weeks to clear up. Let’s face it. The shaving bumps business is a good one to go into because sufferers will try these products at least once. No doubt someone will testify to something that really, really worked and literally changed their lives. Pray tell, because inquiring minds want to know.

The recommendations to minimize shaving bumps are not rocket science. Some suggest that hot, moist washcloth treatment to the area loosens up the pores. Generously apply shaving gel or cream. Do no stretch the skin. Shave in the direction of hair growth using as few strokes as possible. Rinse with cold water and apply moisturizing lotion to the shaved area…and, voila!

Nevertheless, at some point medical intervention becomes necessary by a doctor with an interest in such concerns. Effective antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and minor procedures may be prescribed. Just the other day, a teenage girl presented to the office with recurrent boils in her armpits. More than the pain, she felt a social outcast, believing the condition to be the result of shaving. Looking at this video, equips you to likewise diagnose and provide much comfort to someone plagued by this uncommon but miserable condition. (For further information, search Hidradenitis Suppurativa on Youtube).

When Venus and Serena Williams seized control of the tennis world, armpit hair was not high on their agenda. Gasp! Sophisticated fans felt shock at being hijacked by barbarians. After all, even the few lucky European champions had become civilized (read Americanized) by the time they reached the top. Maria ‘Sugarova’ is a prime example. The William sisters eventually groomed in accordance with the mainstream culture. But that has not stopped them from still mashing up every opposition. A generation ago, few Dominican women shaved. Today, would it be fair to say that there are few with good jobs who don’t?

There are always two sides to a story. The year that Elvis died, church members were giving an American missionary a hard time about wearing a sleeveless dress. She sought refuge by asking my opinion, fully expecting a favorable casting vote on the controversy. However, I instinctively ruled with my compatriots, declaring a sleeveless dress to be inappropriate in a worship setting. Why? Because (my words at the time) “armpit hairs could be suggestive and distracting to young men.”

Way papa!

Have I come a long way!  Society is ever changing. The debate never stops. Hair can be one’s glory or the bane of their existence. Suffice it to say, there are few real medical reasons to retain or disdain body hair. It’s whatever floats your boat. By the way, that calypsonian who popularized the expression ‘hairy like a fairy’ obviously had not seen one. Can’t say I have either. But if truth be told, the very thought of that Brazilian wax still makes me cringe.

Dr. Christian, I look forward to your weekly articles with elation, but today I am disappointed by what you have written. The article lacks depth and does not say anything really from a medical stand point about the issue of pubic hairs.

I wish that you would not lower my expectations of your pieces.

    Hi All,

I’ve actually done the wax thing and it isn’t that bad. Infact, I waxed my legs, underarms, and pantyline just this weekend. Don’t be afraid guys. It isn’t that bad.

waxing no matter where hurts like nobodies business like seriously if you try tweezing one strand of hair you’ll scream much less for a couple 100s at one time… best you say it takes time ..the first time is the hardest but eventually it gets easier somewhat like the activity we all so love… the first pluck of the cherry you swear never you again .. but as time goes by it gts easier..

So far I’ve received five (5) thumbs down: I am wondering what in the comments I wrote constitutes the thumbs down; as such I would like to ask any of the to write in a single sentence what is wrong about anything I said! You are invited to refute, condemned, or deny anything you deem untrue; however in doing so I demand that you present something in your argument to substantiate your claims.

I am sure the disease I am viewing in the picture is acne vulgaris, as such I will concentrate on therapy. Acne therapy can continue for months, and even years. People who conscientiously follow the prescribed regimen greatly increase their chances for improvement, and the prevention of permanent scarring and pitting of the skin. When acne has left permanent, disfiguring scars, there are medical techniques that can remove, or improve the blemishes. One method is plaining with a rotary, high-speed brush; this removes the outer layer of pitted skin, leaving the growing layer and the layers containing the glands, and hair follicles.

New epithelium grows from the layers underneath; it is rosy at first, and gradually becomes normal in color. The technique has also been used successfully in removing some types of disfigurations resulting from accidents; the technique is also called “sand-paper surgery” or dermabrasion, and is recommended only for selected case of acne, and results are not always satisfying. Because patients with acne often have a lack of knowledge about the nature of their skin disorder; their education regarding the disease is a major component of care. The disorder often affects young people at a time when they are more concerned about their appearance, and acceptance by their peers; even though the disorder is not life-threatening, it can adversely affect one’s self image, and self-esteem

Very often people are misinformed about the cause and effects of acne. It is not a contagious disease, nor is it due to nastiness, or shall we say uncleanliness, or poor personal hygiene. There is the myth, it is caused, or made worst by lack of sleep, constipation, masturbation, and various types of venereal disease, hostility, or anger. However, dietary indiscretion can sometimes contribute to the appearance of lesions; nevertheless, there are very few people who can find a cause-effect relationship between certain food the have eaten, the appearance of acne lesions. In general, colas, chocolate, and fried foods need not be eliminated, nor be restricted from one’s diet in hopes that acne can be avoided or cured. In any event a well balanced diet is recommended for the management of acne.

Pimples, and pustules should not be squeezed, since squeezing can press the sebum, and accumulate debris more firmly into the clogged duct, and increase the chance of inflammation, and the spread of infection. Blackheads, and whiteheads are best removed by applying a prescription medication that causes peeling of the skin. Since the management of acne can go on for years, periodic evaluation by an dermatologist is recommended.

      Right now you have 9.

If you had read my response to comment below. you would have seen where I asked you what does Acne has to do with Dr. Christian’s message–all he spoke about was hair and its treatment that is sometimes leaves us feeling uncomfortable –such face shaving

Unfortunately you would not know anything about this because your head is bald and so is your face–maybe even the whole part of your body. Hehehehe

    Aha!

I think I get it. It seems Dr. Christian likes to use dose of drama and a splash of humour to engage the reader. Since he cannot detail everything, he invites readers to contribute their insights and experiences. Evidently, he’s hard to ignore.

So, although he opened with ‘horrors’ of Brazilian waxing, I always got the impression that his focus was on the serious medical aspects of body hair.

Each weekend, I can’t wait to read the latest SPARKLE article. For whatever reason, I feel it’s always personally relevant to me. It provokes me to think and act in a way the purely informational sites like WebMD does not.

    Keep it up Doc!

You are right on here! That tells me that there is someone here with a good reading comprehension–not only that you should have enlightened the minds of those who are saying that Dr. Christian’s message is weak.

That is why I love to read Dr. Christians message, he is a brilliant and humble man–he knows how to humor us and give the information which are significant as we exist in this mortal state of ours. Blessings!

Rastas have an advantage. Being all-natural, they don’t waste money on razor blades and shaving creams. If Jah didn’t want us to have it, why would he put it there? Good point!–Dr. Sam Christian

Doctor Sam you have probably noticed the nature of my responses to your message, that I always speak on anything that mentions God–and I am glad that there is always something in your message to provoke this response from me–to speak about the things of Life, both physically and Spiritually.

This time it is about the idea of the “Rasta–man” as quoted above, except that you claimed that the idea is a “good point”, but I beg to differ.

The reason why I think that this point or idea is “incorrect” is because I understand that God is about the Spirit–not the flesh–God is Holy, True, and Righteous, all in all God is about “Perfection” –the Perfection which is demonstrated in Love, for “God is Love”–all of it is written at 1st John 4

We, as human beings do not have that “perfection” physically–especially if our mind has not yet entered it process of renewal– because Adam and Eve, our first parents, defiled that “perfect body” which God gave to them, when they interacted with Lucifer. the wicked angel in Garden of Eden–know as Satan today.

    • May 26, 2014

What the majority of human beings have yet to understand is that, Adam was a “perfect” man just as Jesus was a Perfect Man on earth. Once again, had he chose obedience, his offspring would be living a perfect Life today.

However God causes things to happen so that He might demonstrate His Power and Authority–without our “imperfection” He cannot do that. Jesus once said to Paul: at 2nd Corinthians 12: 9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in your weakness” Paul had prayed for healing from his sickness, which was to keep him humble–according to the story

The perfection of Jesus’ body is the reason He is also referred to as the “Lamb of God”, for that body of His in all its “perfection” represented the “Lamb” without “blemish” –no sickness, no scars, no corruptibility in the physical–, which was to be slaughtered and killed as a sacrifice of atonement to God for the sins of the world–once and for all.

But because of Adam’s sinful interaction with Satan–who mischievously influenced him to disobey God’s command and to rebel against Him–as I already said above:

Adam defiled that “perfection” of his body; he died spiritually–meaning that God’s Likeness–Love–was exhaled from him. God sent Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden with the curse of physical existence–in all its cases of “imperfection” which we, who are his offspring are living with today.

But we don’t have to live this body with that mind of “imperfection” where the fruits of futility are processed and produced–God wants us to return to Him in perfect form all in all, because He is a Holy God, who cannot tolerate imperfection.

In fact that would be a tragic fate for us; because if we leave the body with a mind that is still processing and producing futility–which are the things of death, we will continue in Eternity with that same mind condition and its production forevermore. That is what it means to be living in hell, and yet man is not taking heed.

And so, by faith in the Blood of Jesus the Man who is of Eternal Spirit, the Christ of Love–we can retain that perfection which God gave to us from the beginning–that is what Jesus meant, when He told us: “I have come that they might have Life and that they might have it abundantly” John 10: 10

I write that term with a capital “L”, for I know that Life and the existence of the physical body is not the same; the apostle Paul says at 2nd Corinthians 5: 4:

“For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, (meaning undressed) but further clothed, (meaning redressed) that mortality may be swallowed up by Life” –Mortality means this dead physical body of ours. Peter echoes that same tent idea, referring to his physical body.

So what does all of this have to do with being “hairy like a fairy” I write it in my entry below:

      • May 26, 2014

“I instinctively ruled with my compatriots, declaring a sleeveless dress to be inappropriate in a worship setting. Why? Because (my words at the time) “armpit hairs could be suggestive and distracting to young men.” Dr. Christian

Doctor Sam, it was good that simply said a “sleeveless dress” not directly pointing to the person who was wearing that dress–yes, that goes for all of us women–especially at a place of worship.

But for me, the question is: “What is a missionary” who, I am sure, claimed to be a servant of God, who is Holy, doing at a place of worship to Him wearing a sleeveless dress?

What is the message which she is supposed to be passing on to those who do not know God, when she, herself, has no knowledge of Him and His Ways of Life, in the first of place?

But that is the problem with all of us. We do not know the God of Life; we think that we have Life because we are “charged” with all sorts of material things–even good health–but in God’s opinion Life is in the Spirit, as Jesus said to us: “It is the Spirit who gives Life, the flesh profits nothing! The words which I speak to you are Spirit and they are Life” John 6: 63

As far as hair on the body is concerned I learned since I was a young teenager that armpit hair, for example, was insanitary–in that it provoked armpit order. Thanks to God for a young man in Dominica who pointed that truth to me, because he loved me–I was able to correct this before it was too late.

Today I simply use a light cream–no razors–I leave the cream in my armpit for at least five minutes before I jump into the shower with lots of soap and thick washcloth.

As women, we ought to do this at least every week or two, and the less hair we have, the less cream and the time to leave it in our armpit the safer for us. Also, the more frequently we shave the less the root remain, until it seem like the hairs have stopped growing.

As a woman, I love the beards and moustache of a man–all of the men in my Life–including my son, my brothers, and my dad have beards and moustache, but they all shave from time to time–not everyday.

According to the Bible and hair on the head. The apostle Paul tells us women–that our head is for the glory of our husband–we should keep our hair on; it is our main beauty. Paul says that it is shameful to God, for a woman to cut or shave the hair on her head–the same as it is for a man to wear long hair. For example, Paul says at 1st Corinthians 11: 14-15:

“Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering”.

So I end this discuss by saying that all of our afflictions of the body is in us because at we are existing with a mind condition which processes the things of futility and death–not Life–that which we inherited from our first parents.

But in Jesus Christ we have Salvation and Reconciliation to our God of Holiness and Perfection. Jesus tells us that if we learn to Love, we can become: “As perfect as our Father in Heaven is Perfect” Mathew 5: 48

The things in us which are imperfect are not from God’s blessings, they are through His cursing because of man’s disobedience to His commands–right from the beginning–“For the wages of sin is death” Spiritually– and the body without the Spirit is dead as well.

Doc; I do not know if I am correct on this one; nevertheless, what I am viewing here seems to be a worst case of acne vulgaris; which is a disorder of the skin with eruption of papules, or pustules, more particularly, acne vulgaris. I will not go into too much detail. I will refrain from certain aspects of the disease, and focus on four variables, and treatment.

Acne rosa’cea is a form acne that most often occurs in persons over the age of twenty-five years old. Typically, the skin around each pustule is a rosy red; hence the name rosacea. This form of acne usually is resistant to treatment, and is often associated with deep seated emotional problems. We also know of tropical acne; (acne tropica’lis), which is severe acne vulgaris occurring in the tropics when the weather is hot and humid, and characterized by the presence of large and painful cysts, modules, and pustules that to the formation of conglobate abscesses, and frequent scarring and tend to localize on the back, nap of the neck, gluteus maximums, thighs, and upper arms and usually sparing the face. It tends to affect those who have had acne vulgaris at an earlier age.

Acne variolifor’mis is a rare condition with red-dish-brown, papulopustular umbilicated lesions, usually on the brow, and scalp; probably a deep variant of acne necrotica miliaris. There is also acne venena’ta which is acne produced by contact with a great variety of acnegenic chemicals, including those used in cosmetic, and grooming agents and in industry.

It must me noted that acne vulga’ris, a chronic disorder usually occurring in adolescents, and young adults, in which there is increased production of sebum (oil) from the sebaceous glands, and the formation of comedones (whiteheads and blackheads) that plug the pores. Non-inflammatory acne produces plugged follicles, and a few pimples. Inflammatory acne is characterized by many pimples, pustules, nodules, and inflamed cysts. The lesions are found on the face, neck chest, and shoulders.

Treatment: The noninflammatory lesions often respond to over the counter creams, and lotions containing benzoyl peroxide. Inflammatory lesions often require intensive and individualized medical treatment under the direction of a dermatologist. Acne is treated by both topical, and systemic drugs. there was a time when the most frequently recommended was benzoyl peroxide in a 5 or 10% concentration (Benoxyl, Oxy-5, Oxy-10, and Persodax). The medication is applied to the skin daily or as frequently as necessary to produce mild dryness of the skin. A mainstay for treatment of inflammatory acne continues to be oral tetracycline, which is known to be effective for most cases, and safe even when taken for years. A relatively new systemic drug for severe, treatment-resistant acne is isotretinoin (13-cis-retionic acid, 13-cis-RA).

It inhibits the secretion of sebum, and alters the lipid composition of the skin surface. Isotretinoin is a teratogen; hence it is not given to pregnant women. It can also cause bone changes; minor side effects include dry mouth, and dry eyes. Tretinoin (all-trans-retinoic acid, Retin-A) is applied topically to reduce the number of comedones, and to prevent the formation of inflammatory lesions.

I could laborate more; but I need to hold back on certain information, since I do not want a certain person to go into another forum and talk out of her mind about what she picked up, and try to throw it back in my face oui! (Not Edited).

Francisco Telemaque May 25, 2014 “:I could (laborate) more; but I need to hold back on certain information, since I do not want a certain person to go into another forum and talk out of her mind about what she picked up, and try to throw it back in my face oui

Yeah! And I made sure that I read from top to bottom of this message, but guess what! Paragraph 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are well written–even with all of those medical terms–but when I get to the last paragraphs, which is certainly from your own thoughts “elaborate” is spelt “laborate” I wonder why?

And so you probably know what that “certain person” is throwing things back in your face. Maybe she has a mind that is brilliant–more than you can ever imagine–but not only that.

This mind of hers may definitely be, under the control of “Holy Spirit” who flourishes her thoughts with His “wisdom” and “understanding” to know the things of Life–Life which is of the Spirit, not of the flesh.

No “natural” man with that “carnal” mind of his– in this world–can beat that kind of attribute in the Spiritual man, for it comes from God Almighty alone–He who wants to be Life in the “natural man, but they refuse to accept this Life.

And so I suggest that you start “thinking” before you speak your words of insults and ridicule to other people–including your “certain person” above–because there are many like that “certain person” here, who is able to discern the “rubbish” of your words and to throw all of it back into your face. Dr. Christian did not give the impression that he was talking about acne, except where he vaguely mentioned the agent used to treat acne is the same used to treat the disease which affects the person in the picture. You too need to be accurate before you start trying to prove me dumb.

My entire submission is based on the fact I may have recognized the disease as Acne Vulgaris; I did not attempt to diagnose the person, nevertheless, what I an seeing on her face in the picture impress me that it is Acne Vulgaris, I may be wrong, nevertheless, I detailed the treatment using the same treating agent mentioned by Sam, and went beyond!

“Like acne, products proliferate like benzoyl peroxide, shaving creams and ‘Bump Patrol etc.’ The list goes on. In my experience, they may work for a few rounds of shaving, then comes the suffering with ugly,”(Dr. Sam Christian MD).

If you read Dr. Christian comments over you will find he mentioned Benzoyl Peroxide, as in the quote above, you will I commented on benzoyl peroxide in greater detail, and in the dosage dispensed; so be real careful, I did not try to link my comments based on what the doctor said: Note; once again I elaborated based on my knowledge of the diseases acne vulgaris, and effects on the human face.

Don’t tangle with Elizabeth, cause you may have to get the kid from the Arizona boarder to draw down on me, he claimed that he has two guns, but I know the only gun he has is the place called Two Guns Arizona, and the only thing which represents civilazation in Two Guns Arizona, is an Rest Area, with two bathrooms, one for men and the other women. As a teacher I know that when I asked a question, I am waiting for an answer, which matches with my own–that is the first way.

The second way is that, a person ask a question, because they want to know about the particular idea that was put before them–which they have no knowledge about.

So Doctor Christian asked the question–not with his intention to answer it–even if he knows or do not know the answer–the theme of his message is based on the Title which says: “Hairy Like a Fairy”

He ended his message with that Title, as he said that the calypsonian who sang “Hairy Like a Fairy” have never seen one, neither has he! We need to learn to read with understanding–otherwise we do not make it in this world.

Elizabeth, say what you want about me, that’s okay, I allow you the privilege to have fun at my expense; nevertheless, you need to understand, that very few people who owns a computer are scholastically educated, or shall I say academically educated, and unless it is explained to in a kindergarten format, they do not understand.

And that is why you read such garbage as you have responded to.

Other, when they encounter someone with superior knowledge, they are quick to accuse people of plagiarism;. One of them is asking me for my source; in other words, he need me to state him and his mother the name of all the universities, and colleges I attended in my life. How stupid one can get.

I stated on DNO many times that I am professionally an electronic/electrical engineer, turn medical student: I said many times I majored in Health Science, although I failed to graduate with a medical degree, if that idiot had any commonsense he would simply read it and if he/she had the ability to understand what they read the thought of plagiarism would not be on their agenda. Yes let us take him down to our low level, we (doh know so he should not know).

To the (SOB) if you wish to know my source, before you stay in Dominica, or wherever you are kissing the butt, of the government as I have read you before, go and enroll in some educational institution, and educate your stupid mind, and just maybe even if you fail to graduate the knowledge you will acquire will perhaps afford you the opportunity to learn something that you can talk about.

To the “Look Out thing” you are not my equal okay I will tell you as Elizabeth, told me: “when you see I write my ting on DNO leave it alone and do not respond to it.” The next thing an idiot like you will be doing is ask Dr. Christian for his source too.

My source is that I majored in Health Science, and I am damn sure if you and anyone of your relatives; and I am talking to the “rat Lookout” have an medical emergency I might be able to save you bloody life’s, until the paramedics arrive. Sorry Liz, I did not intend to respond to your ting eh.

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahah!

@Francisco Telemaque May 27, 2014 “Sorry Liz, I did not intend to respond to your ting eh.”

Yes, you might as well be sorry, because I was wondering why did you respond to my comment to Silver Silver? But I do not accept your sorry either.

And I would appreciate it, if you would stop those “empty bragging” when you are speaking to me–you know that I know you don’t qualify–not even claiming to be a professionally an electronic/electrical engineer–you would not retire at the age of 47 with such money making profession!

It is just that you fooled me from the beginning–I honestly believed you; not knowing that you are a wolf in sheep’s clothing–hehehehehehehehe

Total hair removal in genital region front through using wax leaving only a bit on front. Ladies have to get on hands and knees to give wax techs total access. Google it.

Brazilian wax is when you have your private parts hot waxed and then they put a piece of plaster on it and pull the hairs off.

I love this article, it is humorous, sensible but also frightening.
