Crayfish River community enraged at piles of dirt dumped in Jolly John Park; cancellation of sports events

Villagers of Crayfish River are not happy with a decision by a council member to authorize the dumping of truckloads of dirt on the playing field without consulting them. The dumping of dirt was well-intentioned because the council had plans of enlarging the playing area. However, there wasn’t enough planning or consultation with two relevant landowners, and the project got stalled.

It has been months now since sports organizers have been waiting for some news from the council that the dirt will be taken away. Unfortunately, their waiting is in vain. There is no indication that the piles of dirt will be removed any time soon. The playing field has previously been the hub for sporting activities on the entire eastern coast of Dominica. Various schools would patronize the park for inter-school cricket competitions.

Besides that, the Kalinago Premier League (KPL) which is an annual event can no longer take place. The KPL is an event that would bring large crowds of people to the park. Cricket is a way of life for the people. Something is missing in their social life and that has to be addressed. Whenever there is a cricket match on the grounds of Jolly John, one can see people like “ants on a trail leading to a lollipop”. This is how much people flock to the park not only to be a spectator but to socialize with friends. Jolly John playing field is a place where social circles were built. Unfortunately, people have fallen back into their isolated corners. The villagers want the authorities to address this eyesore urgently.

The ongoing catastrophe at Antrim was triggered by the overseas road contractor conveniently dumping a hundred thousand of tons of spoil on the valley floor without taking into account the sensitivity of the land. The end result being one of the biggest civil engineering blunders in the history of the Caribbean.

that they love to do. Put container and debris on the playing fields where people should be recreating. The Kalinago people need to rise up and make a big issue out of this so that whoever put that there come and take it out fast fast fast… Cozier Frederick what is the meaning of this? Kalinago chief what you saying?

Jolly John Park is just a microcosm of the whole country. Large slabs of concrete with steel have been dumped in the once pristine rivers. Derelict vehicles abandoned all over the landscape of the island. Garbage is being disposed indiscriminately. No large swath of land escapes degradation.

What has happened to Jolly John is unquestionable evidence of an uncaring aristocratic government. The people’s welfare is secondary to the opportunistic personal financial advancement of the gluttonous villains in power.
