Head Coordinator of Dominica Can Dance, Ansel Prince, has promised that Dominicans will receive a show to remember when it is held on December 14th, 2013.
Prince, who has been organizing the show for the past two years, said it was conceptualized to give young Dominicans the opportunity to direct their energies toward something positive.
“The show was basically organized to expose, develop and celebrate the art of dance on our island. It is an open competition …. we have four categories of dance which you can register into which are Latin, hip hop, creative contemporary and our local traditional dances,” he said.
He added that the show has been receiving a lot of interest from the public.
“This is our second year. We started off last year in July, our first show last year was December 25th, 2012 and we had three shows that year and now we are on our third show … the first was on August 25th counting down to October and now December 14th,” he said.
One of the main dancers of the show, Lovely Lewis, pointed out that although preparations have been difficult, she intends to stick to it since she simply enjoys dancing.
“I rose up in dancing. I always danced for my former school the Goodwill Secondary school and for college. I would always encourage my friends to take part in competitions so that we could become bigger. I started dancing from young and it is something I love to do,” she said.
She added that this is the first time that she will be participating in the Dominica can Dance competition.
Lewis is expected to perform with the group “Turned Up.”
“I will be performing with my partner Mia and preparations have been difficult because she lives far away and I am working, so getting together to practice is sometimes difficult. Also we don’t always agree on the songs because we have different perspectives but we both want the same thing, so we know that we need to finish what we started,” she explained.
Winners of the competition will receive a grand prize of $5,000 and handsets from LIME, the second place winners will receive $1,500 and handsets from LIME while the third place winner will receive $500.
Participants will also receive trophies and other items.
The finalists for the 2013 Dominica can Dance show are “Turned Up”, “the Inspiration”, “Nibbs”, “The Suspects”, “Linx Master”, “DNTL” and “the Bouncers”.
