Dominica records first road fatality for the year

Dominica recorded its first road fatality for 2020. According to police reports, twenty-seven-year-old Gibson Kimian Esprit lost his life following a road accident on Saturday.

The collision occurred at around 9pm in Castle Comfort.

Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Simon Edwards, said Esprit was riding a scooter (registration number PI543) in a northerly direction on the road when he lost control.

“The scooter landed forcefully on the road and Esprit sustained injuries about his body, particularly his head,” the police PRO said.

Esprit was reportedly transported by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department of the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital where he was examined by a medical doctor and admitted.

The following day (Sunday), he succumbed to his injuries and was officially pronounced dead.

Esprit’s body has been escorted to the Lyndhurst Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.

He may of survived if he was wearing a helmet, not to long ago them police was stopping people on bikes for not wearing a helmet but as you know in Dominica everything is just for a time, then back to normal nonsense as usual…

The thing with people is that once police out they will cooperate. As soon as police gone, they back to their ways. I know the police force leaves a lot to be desired but seriously the police cannot be asking for seat belts and helmets 24-7. People have a responsibility to protect themselves, not to avoid paying a fine but to safeguard their lives. Someone who gave me a ride to town once was actually offended when I put on my seat belt! Asking me if I think he cannot drive- I said no I asphalt not a dietary requirement. If I give someone a ride I ask them to put on their seat belt – or get off my vehicle, simple. I’m just saying all this to say that we each have a responsibility to safeguard ourselves. Rest in peace to the young man and condolences to his family.

There is a giant pothole on the road. This is not the first motorcycle accident on it. Whoever is responsible for road conditions is not doing their job, the hole has been there for years and it’s also mashing up cars.. who is responsible for this? Some family has lost their loved one..

The hole was dug by DOWASCO when fixing a burst pipe and never fixed (as with all roads that they have cut to fix pipes). Has been like that for over 1 year. The hole was filed some time back with tarish but got washed away by heavy rain and is now getting bigger and deeper. The pal rep for Roseau South leaves in the area why has she not yet brought it up to the attention of those responsible to have it fixed? This is really getting to be a problem on that road especially seeing that it is in the middle of the road.

If Dominicans would start sueing the government for not maintaining the roads (basic things that they should do) then there would be less chances of accidents due to bad roads…simple.

We have to blame someone but our self blame the porthole were you there seems like you were. I have seen these guys on scooters do some dangerous things on the road, like making what we call wheelie riding on the back wheel and the front up in the air tell me if this is not dangerous when they fall for sure they will land on their head.

We have been paying a pothole tax, on top of our annual vehicle tax for the last few years. Where is this money going?

Why, down the hole of course!

So this accident was as a result of the hole? Just asking..
