Dominica on Friday joined 120 countries that voted at the United Nations General Assembly in favor of adopting a resolution calling for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce” between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza.
The resolution called for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities” and it condemns” all acts of violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians, including all acts of terror and indiscriminate attacks, as well as all acts of provocation, incitement and destruction.”
It was adopted after a rejected amendment by Canada, which called for an unequivocal condemnation of the October 7 “terrorist attack” by Hamas which led to the killing of 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians, and the taking of 220 hostages. The Canadian amendment was backed by the United States.
Of note is the fact that the resolution did not specifically condemn Hamas for the attack nor did it mention the group by name, something that the United States said was necessary. It also did not mention the right of Israel to defend itself nor did it mention rocket attacks by Hamas and other militant groups on civilian targets in Israel.
However, it calls for the “immediate and unconditional release of all civilians who are being illegally held captive.”
The resolution also called for supplies, such as fuels, to enter the Gaza Strip and called on Israel to cancel its demand for Palestinians in the north of Gaza to relocate to the south and said there is a need for all parties to exercise maximum restraint “and on all those with influence on them to work toward this objective.”
It “reaffirms that a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved by peaceful means, based on the relevant United Nations resolutions and in accordance with international law, and on the basis of the two-state solution.”
The resolution itself is non-binding and carries no legal weight but it is of some significance since it gives an idea of what the rest of the world thinks about the ongoing war.
The current flare-up in one of the world’s longest-running conflicts began when hundreds of Hamas gunmen infiltrated communities near the Gaza Strip in an unprecedented assault on the Jewish state.
Since then Israel has launched air and artillery attacks on Gaza killing over 7,000 Palestinians and has vowed to destroy Hamas.
A total of 120 countries voted in favor of the resolution while 14 voted against and 45 abstained.

This conflict did not start a few weeks ago by Hamas attack on Israel. It has been ongoing for 70+ years by Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine and the open air imprisonment of 2.3 million Palestinians.
