Dominican cricketer on Windies ‘A’ Team for South Africa tour

Kavem Hodge

Dominican cricketer, Kaveen Hodge, has been selected to the West Indies “A” Team for the upcoming tour of South Africa. Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel made the announcement on November 12.

The Windies team will play three four-day “Test” matches against South Africa “A” from 21 November to 8 December. The team will be captained by Trinidadian wicketkeeper/batsman Joshua Da Silva, following the West Indies “A” victory in the series in Bangladesh earlier this year.

Guyanese Tevin Imlach, the other wicket-keeper/batsman has been named as the vice-captain. Lead Selector, Dr. Desmond Haynes, stated that the panel picked a balanced team to give the players more exposure in overseas conditions, similarly to the previous “A” Team tour to Bangladesh earlier this year.

“We had a very good ‘A’ Team tour to Bangladesh earlier this year, when were saw a number of players improve and grow,” he said.

“That tour was great for development in the red ball format – we saw some excellent individual performances which led to the team’s overall success. Now with continued investment by CWI in our players, we want to see the
same kind of progress on this trip to South Africa.”

In his cricketing career, Kavem Hodge has played for the West Indies Senior Team, West Indies A, Windward Volcanoes, Combined Campuses and Colleges, West Indies Under-19, West Indies Cricket Presidents XI, Saint Lucia Kings, CWI B Team, La Soufriere Hikers, Bay Leaf Blasters, Indian River Rowers, and Team Headley.

He made his debut for the West Indies One Day International team in 2023 in Dubai versus the United Arab Emirates.

Hodge, along with another outstanding Dominica cricketer Alick Athanaze, were recently named Sports Ambassadors for the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Another sad loser, sad reality.Government was not responsible for village cricket tournaments. In those days the youth was not as lazy as they are today.St.Joseph has produced the most national cricketers in the history of Dominica, the playing field the played on to become national cricketers is still there. So is Dublance,Portsmouth and Mahaut. So stop your political foolishness, stupid, negative ahole.Stupid comments like yours keep the youth away from sports. When I played for the national team the playing fields were not as good as they are today. We did not have aholes making idiotic comments.aWith negative comments like yours discouraging the youth,it is your fault they turn to drugs.

Hodge, Da Silva and Jordan will provide much needed veteran leadership to a relatively young squad that need a lot of international exposure to hone their skills.

Too many West Indies junior and senior cricketers seem to be apathetic and bored on the field of play while acting like they would rather be somewhere else.

Hodge has always been dialed in during matches and enthusiastic off the field. His proven all round efforts have not been duly rewarded at selection time. At 30 years of age, he still has a lot of good cricket left.

DNO….At some time soon, you should stop reporting on anything regarding West Indies cricket. There really is nothing to celebrate about the state of our cricket.
Those of us who are old enough to remember, have some very good memories of what used to be. There is nothing now, neither will there be anything in the future.

Bottom line, West Indies cricket is dead.

That’s a demotion from having been on the senior team and now sent to SA with the A team when England will be playing the senior team in less than three weeks time.
But who to blame? I can’t blame the selectors because he is not getting enough runs and wickets. I can’t even blame Kavem because there is no cricket in Dominica so he could develop his skills . So who to blame? No one else than Roosevelt Skerrit, who destroyed cricket in Dominica with his anti youth development agenda as he fools our young people with legalization of marijuana, rum, sewo and laziness and those work well with any sports. I offer a thousand dollars to anyone that can prove to me that village cricket in Dominica over the weekend, from Grandbay to Scott’s head, to include lubiere, Newton, all of roseau Valley, roseau north all the way to cottage,,Penville to Borne and Borne all the way to Marigot. So despite the fact that Skerrit is bringing international cricket to Dominica he ihas killed the sport here

I wish Kavem good luck on this tour. I’m hoping he demonstrates patience and sound judgements on the tour. I’ve been disappointed so far with Athanaze and his propensity for playing risky shots rather than being like Kohli and having the mindset to occupy the crease and get big scores whilst helping his team win. Winning is the only thing that matters. Individual stats of striking rate, run rate don’t mean sh*t when your team or country lost.

Jonathan, it appears Athanaze is suffering from the same premature dismal syndrome that short circuited the promising career of another talented batsman, Devon Smith of Grenada.

Hopefully, Alick will start converting good starts into big scores which will allow him to retain his place on the Senior team.
