Another Douglas and concerned Dominican speaks out

Douglas

Forever tangled in a seemingly elaborate web of political warfare, we are steadily approaching two years since the December 2009 general elections were held in Dominica, and yet by listening to the content in our political discourse it would seem that the election season has never left us.

We are also witnessing a shocking spike in crime and lawlessness in Dominica with no apparent solution in sight. From government’s apparent dis-interest in properly investigating or seriously conducting the case surrounding the firebombing of Glenworth Emanuel’s home, to the German Tourist who painstakingly narrated his terrible ordeal of harassment and abuse at Batibou Beach to the Irish National violently butchered on our shores, the trend is alarming. These events can surely serve as an impediment to our progress and the friendly “Nature Island of the World” image which the Government of Dominica is attempting to project on the world stage.

With constant accusations of corruption brought against the DLP administration reverberating sharply and frequently over the airwaves and throughout Dominican Society at large, many in the public have become irresponsive to the cries of blatant corruption. We need law and order and we need more transparency in the governing process.

With an 18 to 3 seat advantage in the Dominican Parliament it would seem that power is Labor’s to lose. Just keep working, let the opposition continue to talk about the fallacies of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, whilst business rolls on in government. I am shocked though, as to how sensitive the ruling party has become to constructive criticism. With swift haste you become labeled either Pro Skerrit or Anti Skerrit.  (What ever happened to being a “Concerned Dominican?” ) With such a huge majority, the ruling administration has become unwilling to listen to different voices.

We should remember that no select few can claim to possess the blueprint for success or a monopoly on good ideas. What we need for true progress in Dominica is a progressive and fruitful exchange on ethics and issues between the ruling party and the opposition. With truth and thought, stimulating ideas to raise the level of our political discourse which can help to fully realize and efficiency utilize the hard work and intelligence of the Dominican People (at home and abroad). Without a rise in transparency and better supervision of Government Policies and their implementation, both sides will simply continue arguing and come election time, the ruling party will simply present the electorate with a case of progress VS backwardness.

Simply because the opposition aren’t keeping tabs deeply enough to properly understand the present state of affairs and so are unable to present the electorate with plausible policy alternatives. A word to the opposition: Engage our Dominican Ministers more, invite them into the conversation as much as possible, you’ll find that rewards are bountiful. Let’s talk agriculture, health care, education, sports, foreign affairs, Tourism. Let’s talk issues.

Yes I believe a vibrant country needs a progressive opposition. I deeply appreciate the efforts of Matt Peltier on Q95’s “The Hot Seat” for giving the opportunities to the opposition leaders to lay out their plans and voice their positions. What is the present state of the opposition, and who do we have to look up to lead the cause? Whilst acknowledging the symbolic individuals in our present system: namely Judith Pestaina representing the Freedom Party, and Edison James, Ron Green and Sprags John representing the UWP, I also can’t ignore the growing discontent by the public at large towards the present situation.

Some talk of the need for Unity between the two opposition camps if they are to pose any serious threat to the DLP administration. I believe it is important for both Freedom and UWP to dig deep and rediscover their party principles which allowed them to thrive. Only then can a union be arranged based on ideals and substantive policy proposals providing the impetus required to stimulate the Dominican Public. Even more so because day by day Labor seems to be straying into unchartered territory, failing to heed the warnings of Labor stalwarts of days gone by.

My Uncle Mike and Father Rosie provided a strong voice whilst following through with the “all shall eat” slogan of the then Labor Party by aggressively seeking out new investment possibilities and educational opportunities for our young people. In fact Mike Douglas played a significant role in welcoming and establishing Ross University in Portsmouth, and we all see how that has blossomed successfully for the benefit of Dominicans. “Is Mike we like”, he was a dynamic force in opposition / in parliament, gifted with outstanding eloquence, oratory skills and a fearless tenacity keeping the ruling party responsive and responsible. If Mike was alive today, and with the information and legitimate allegations (thanks to the impressive and substantive investigative journalism of Mr. Lennox Linton) he would surely make parliament rock. My message to the opposition: Get it together.

This brings me to the question of the climate of victimization and “Douglas Marginalization” which is becoming very evident.

It is becoming clearer by the day that the present administration has been victimizing qualified and much needed Dominican individuals who possess impressive talents and expertise, simply due to the over-politicizing of our public institutions.

For example : It is very depressing for me personally the way in which former Magistrate  Behanzin was dismissed, not because he is my brother but because of the passion and determination in his approach is exactly what we need in law enforcement at his point in time. Punishment alone though, will not stem the tide or ease the hopelessness felt among offenders. We have to remain vigilant in creating new opportunities to engage our youth. I admire Tiyani’s continued dedication, his bravery to continue to speak out for truth. The revolutionary blood of our father, the late Rosie Douglas flows through his veins. It is a shame though, that out energies have to be spent fighting internal battles. (We are our own enemies.) There is a need for reconciliation among Dominicans, so that we can face the world as one force, too many of our public institutions are heavily politicized. We need to think outside the box, see the big picture, and plot a course for our nation in this ever competitive Global Landscape. Where is our country headed?

Recently a very powerful article was published by my cousin former Press Secretary Mr. Sean Douglas with the potential to heavily influence the dynamic of the call for justice in our country. Sean, in my view is a very talented journalist and an outstanding communicator, highlighted by the fact he served the government for 9 years as Press Secretary. Someone doesn’t hold such a post for nine years and then just vanish into obscurity. By the passion displayed in his last article you can tell that he is serious about making a contribution and refuses to be swept aside. The gloves are now officially off and dissent is bubbling over. Dear Sean: I really hope your return will help stimulate fresh thought and ideas, let your conscience guide you.

Why did I choose to discuss these cases or what do I have in common with these men? For one: I’m looking at the trends and wondering if there is any truth to the “Marginalization of the Douglas clan” theory out there. (Very Tempting) But then some people ask me: “How do you explain Ian Douglas (present minister of Tourism and Legal Affairs in the Roosevelt Skerrit Administration), isn’t he an example of a Douglas allowed to serve and play an important role in the present administration?

You must remember this is a man who after the sudden death of my father, the late Honorable Rosie Douglas, ran in Portsmouth’s ensuing by-election on the labor ticket under the slogan “Remember Rosie, Vote Ian”. Yet as a political mind I can’t even recognize, let alone make sense of his present brand of politics. Rest assured he will not escape the wrath of my pen or the serious questions I have for him. We will be demanding accountability. I have my personal story to tell about my experience with feeling victimized and wronged by this very administration. I will reveal myself in due time. I believe that through healthy dialogue truth is revealed. But no matter what, we must continue to raise the flag high and represent in the name of Dominica.

I pledge allegiance.

All Aboard!!

Kim Douglas is a son of former Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica the Honorable Rosie Douglas. He presently resides in Asia, Taiwan. He holds a degree in Political Science/ International relations and Mandarin/ Chinese.

You boys should ashame of yourselves, Sean i am glad you spoke, The truth is you are olny jealous of Skerrit, you all have been total failures. If you disagree, i challenge you to find a job outside of Government. We the true labourites are solid behind our leader and Prime Minister.
Stop using Rosie’s name, the man was very different from you all, he never betrayed the labour party, he tried to change things from within.

You all? Are you refering to me -> Kim Douglas as a failure? I am a progressive Dominican with a message for my country-men (women and children). Since my graduation I have taken it apon myself to repesent black and Caribbean culture in the far east. To raise my voice for Dominica.

Why? Because Asia has some of the largest emerging markets in the world (millions, billions of people) and I have been seeking ways to engage them,Tirelessly paving the way for a deeper relationship. I applaud our government efforts to bring in foereign investments for musch needed infrustructural projects. But the next level is for us to open up these markets for Dominicans. Find out: What do we have that they want? What are we doing to introduce ourselves to the future buyers of the world? I have been working at the grassroots level.

Alas. It is you my friend who succeed in allowing a one party state. You helped elect a man who does not know how to debate and is afraid of it. You elected a man who himself said had no regards for the constitution. What can the UWP do in the face of YOU, the PEOPLE, who decided to aid and abet this foolishness that is going on. “Everyone is crying out for peace. NONE is crying out for JUSTICE”. When will YOU decide to decry wrongdoings of your “friends” in government?

Kim, as a very strong supporter of your dad Rosie, and uncle uncle Mike, I am delighted that people like youself, your brother Tyani and Sean Douglas are speaking out against corruption and all the non sense that is happening in the present day DLP which we worked very hard to build. However, all though I don’t believe you all are speaking out because the Douglases are out of favour with Skeritt as many have accused you of, I believe for the sake of Country which people like Mike and Rosie gave their lives for, you all should brush aside personal victimization (we all know how you all have been victimized like all the rest of us that believe in honesty and trasperency) and help educate us based on what you know such as; what became of the Bird Island, something that was very dear to both Rosie and Mike. We know that Skerrit stated in a famous speech he gave in Venezuella that “Bird Island is the rightful property of Venezuella.” Sine the PM never told the nation or Carbinet anything about Bird Island, please tell us what became of it and educate us bro.

It is about time that the opposition acts like opposition and reosresent Dominica. Have debates, stop saying Skerrit everyday and deal with the issues. Be a ue opposition, even with three seats you’re still needed. Give clear goals and the masses will listen, make valid point and followers will come, show your plans for dominca and dominicans will follow. All we want is a better Dominica. It cannot grow if the opposition cu their nose to spite their face. Go to parliament, stop the Skerrit heckling and show us a road map. I beg u

The DLP was never owned by the Douglas Family and i wish even an elder like Mr Ducreay would confirm that…..proudly. You say Rosie kept the family relevant by winning an election. Ian i hope u get this guy’s message. U are really worthless to the DLP….oh but i think he understands that quite clearly.
I propose that all the years that mike spent in Opposition…the sole DLP member of parliament, was the saving grace of today’s DLP. If not for the DOUGLAS FAMILY LEGACY DLP would NOT be in power today and SKERRIT would not be part of our daily discussion. Thanks to the Douglas Family legacy.
If Mike had decided to give it all up who would have kept the DLP flame burning? Mr. Ducreay? Thomas in Kinghill? Alick lawrence? Ambrose george? Tony Astaphan? Ivor nassief?
      Bubbles? pastor BJ?
By the way DLP couldn’t prove themselves to be anything without DFP help….Up to this very day…..DLP could never achieve anything without the Douglases, after le Blanc and our 1st PM. love him or not u are a nation today because of him.

Every country needs an effective opposition, and there is no denial that our opposition parties are ineffective. What we need is an alternative to Freedom and UWP.

Maybe it is time for a change to the constitution to allow Dominicans in the Diaspora who wish to return home to political life to do so – maybe with limited terms of service.
Look at the people in other countries who enter the political arena – the majority are professionals, business people; some with executive experience. The brain drain has left the Dominican political arena void of many well meaning Dominicans who could make a significant contribution to our country.
We need people who are willing to return to make a sacrifice. People who are willing to join forces and build our country, not for the money or other personal benefits, but because they love our country. We need individuals who feel the call for service to their fellowmen. That is the alternative to the exisiting opposition.

Unless we are prepared to return and fight, not for party, not for constituency and not for personal satisfaction, then my friend, we labor in vain..Dominica should be the focus and “not on our watch” should be our motto. Yes we can make speeches and write papers but unless we are determined to sacrifice our all and have our names dragged thru the mud, then it wont happen.

Here is a quiz for all on the message board.. There are alot of us on this board who will cast comments far and wide about Rosie and Mike..I am going to ask two questions..Your answers will determine if you all really knew these men.

1)Who was Rosie Douglas’s political Hero? Rosie always said to me that if every politician would understand the passion, determination and the love for the poor and underpriviledge like this man………

        2) What were the words that Mike Douglas lived by? If you really knew Mike you would know the answer.. I remember him repeating those very words to me when one of his son’s and I visited Him when he was sick..

Yes comrades. Answer the above questions? Alot of us support parties and people, but do we really know why? What’s your reason?

We are a passionate people. We all want to jump in and do something thats right for our country..Being passionate and wanting to do things won’t cut it.. We need to have what I call ‘political stamina’ and ‘political patience’. Regardless of where we are and who we are, if we are committed, our time will come.

      Rearview Mirror

You may have spent time talking to Brother Rosie on the porch, but judging from your comments, you too, like most Dominicans, seem to have misunderstood him.

For Rosie, Dominica was not first, second and third at all, what was first, second, and third for Rosie Douglas was the solidarity, upliftment and advancement of Black people, in order for us to play our rightful role, at the forefront of all human endeavours including arts, sports, education, science, culture etc…and to do so with a positive self-image, in full recognition of our GREAT African ancestry…

This is what the independence movement was all about.

These are the principles which he sacrificed his freedom for in Canada.

Also, it is important to note that Rosie Douglas did not return to Dominica of his own free will.

Rather, it was only after 16 years in Canada, following his imprisonment, that he was deported back to Dominica in hand cuffs and feed shackles!

Even following is deportation to Dominica in 1976, Rosie spend much of his time in Africa, whether it was in South Africa, Angola, Mozambique or even Libya where he served for some 15 years (1980-1995) as the Executive Chairman of the WORLD MATHABA which played a significant role in ending apartheid in South Africa and freeing Nelson Mandela.

So, really most of the work of Rosie Douglas had little if anything at all to with Dominica per see but to do with a much bigger picture indeed.

Yes, of course Dominica was part of that bigger picture but if this administration tries to erase the contributions of Rosie Douglas from the Dominican psyche, it would seem that they are doing so out of an insular, short-sighted, ignorance, the kind of which has kept Dominica from making any notable progress consistent with their peers inside the Caribbean (which is unfortunate).

What Dominican’s who have not had the opportunity to venture outside of Dominica or even outside of the Caribbean region for that matter need to realize is that Rosie Douglas, to a large extent put Dominica on the map as far as the broader world is concerned.

When Rosie Douglas was elected in January 2000 for the first time in (post-independence) history an election in Dominica was a significant international event.

It was a significant event not only inside the Caribbean but (front page news) in Canada, the US, England, Ireland, and the Middle East, throughout Africa, certainly Libya, and Southern Africa.

This goodwill was reflected by the international contingency which arrived in Dominica for his inauguration never before seen in any Dominica election…

      Why is this important today?

This is important because it was a period when Dominica had an opportunity to galvanize this goodwill and translate it into investment/development opportunities by taking advantage of all of the goodwill developed by Brother Rosie during all of these years in the struggle.

The struggle to end apartheid in South Africa, the struggle against racism in Canada, the struggle for self-determination in Northern Ireland, the struggle to end the Lockerbie dispute which was presided over by none other the late honourable Rosie Douglas.
The struggle for the upliftment of humanity in general and black people in particular.
So, as a result of his contributions, a tiny micro-state like Dominica, by by virtue of producing the likes of a Rosie Douglas, an international symbol much like Nelson Mandela, has by inference made Dominica for that moment in time appear to be a major contributor, punching above its weight in world political affairs.

So, for those who have taken the mantle of leadership after his passing to totally discredit him, and his offspring, send a very clear signal to the world, and more importantly it represents a lost opportunity of enormous magnitude for the country and effectively relegates the country back to the position of obscurity and irrelevance it held prior to 2000.

That is simply, a micro banana republic with endemic corruption going nowhere anytime soon…which is unfortunate because it did not have to be that way!

To the members of the Douglas family who feel aggrieved,it would be rather unfortunate that in your quest to ‘come clean’ you inadvertently cast a shadow on the brilliant work of Mike Douglas. I love the “Rap” songs, especially in(i guess its mandarin) their language, and your “dance”…man i am still laughing(lol)…Also, when that old man handed you that strange (guitar)where you played it and was really “rapping” and rhyming in the end there…great job.

Keep up the good works…Keep representing Dominica…you make us all very proud.
p.s….would very much like to see more videos man.

All the best in your endeavors…..Peace guidance and prosperity…..

Thanks. I really appreciatd the piece you wrote educating the writer about the works of Mike and Rosie. Well Done! Dominicans have a short memory. The DLP I know was always engaging and educating the public. (On the challenges facing Dominica in the post colonial era, and about the vision for our country) You could visit Rosie’s house anytime and engage him in fruitul conversation or an exchange of ideas. It was always uplifting.

Now, its like government is doing, development happening in some cases, but everything is secret. The Domincan populace are becomng docile. The level our political discouse is at rock bottom. The ellectorate has been reduced to mere fans, and they are even neglecting their basic oblgation of keep public officials accountable.

Kim, the Douglas clan seems to think that they are Royalty but Dominica has no monarchy & so such sense of entitlement is an illusion. To bring up Mike Douglas’name here raises the question, what did he do for Portsmouth or Dominica after so many years in politics. The Douglas legacy died with Rosie Douglas who was the most progressive but he lost his sting when he entered electoral politics and got surrounded by power hungry politicians rather than progressive clear thinking Dominicans. The thugs killed him slowly but surely. We cannot deny though his progressive foreign policy and connections still benefit the following regimes up to today.
Regarding future elections is a UWP & Freedom Party Coalition a reality. What will be the foundation for such an alliance other than getting the Labour Party out of power. It’s too bad that the progressives in this country have to forge alliances with talking heads who lack vision, don’t share the ideals of the left and are self center & power hungry rather lovers of Dominica. Sad day for Waitukubuli.

      August 14, 2011

I for sure, will not sit silently and let you(so called “Malayway”) slide with that nonsense you just wrote about Mike, and Rosie Douglas….How dare you!….
Mike did a whole lot for the Labour Party. He brought it back from the brink…He was very instrumental in the establishing of Ross University in Portsmouth.Look what that did for Portsmouth, the People of Portsmouth, and Dominica today….So know you place, and get your facts together. you ungrateful idiot..Trying to smear Mike’s memory and undermining what he did?…..
Malayway?,you are not no damn “malayway”,nor do you represent them.
Who was instrumental in the negotiations with Geest Industries for the land deal in Picard for the Workers who worked at Picard estate? ….eh,tell me who?…You sons of …res(fill in the blanks) seems to have very short memories….A little education can be very dangerous to a few crabs who possess it; and you,my learned friend seems to fall into that category.
……Let me again remind you….because it has become quite apparent to me that some Dominicans have very short memories, and seemingly, very ungrateful; including you….After the fall of the Labour Party in 1979,The Hon.Mike Douglas was the only voice in opposition who remained standing in Parliament. And he, my learned friend, was the only one who went around Dominica defending the Party and trying to rebuild the reputation of the Party with the slogan “Rise again with Labour”..’remember?…or are you just ignorant of the facts?…Mike’s eloquence and oratory skills, were second to none in Dominica….and boy,do the People need a great orator today…

You brood of vipers!….You,my learned friend, are a snake in the grass…..
Let me finish…..Mike was a People’s person,he was accessible. His home was opened to all. He had a connection with the People,he understood their plight. He was always willing to listen to and assist People…Remember when Hurricane David was about to hit Dominica, what Mike did in Portsmouth prior to the hurricane hitting?…ask somebody from Portsmouth, who was there at that time…they will explain to you…..
It was Mike who helped a whole lot of People to get Visas to migrate to the U.S.A, and other Countries to earn a decent living. They can attest to that today….He will always be remembered, and will live in the hearts of the People for a very, very long time…Get your facts straight!….

No one is Talking about no damn “royalty,or monarchy”,for we never had that in Portsmouth or Dominica for that matter. Sheer nonsense…Mike & Rosie..may GOD bless their Souls and may they Rest in Peace, never conducted or carried themselves as such…They were there for the People, working tirelessly on behalf of the People…and it cost them their lives…..
You ungrateful so and so,are getting me quite vex with your reprehensible and quite frankly, repulsive nonsense….
Matter of fact,I remember as a boy playing cricket in my yard with “Atly” and “Washway” on several occasions. Other times, at the”Snack-Bar”,I would be given grapefruit, with a smiling face I my add; by either one, prior to my football matches, “for stamina”,they would say to me,(because it was all about winning our games)…I am saying this, to say, these folks were “down to earth, every day people”…nonsense about “royalty & monarchy”….

It was never a material fact that the “Labour Party belongs to the Douglass. The Labour Party was (yes I say was) about an “ideology”,principles,integrity,dignity,morals,self-esteem,truths…It belonged to THE PEOPLE…The poor, and the disenfranchised People’s Party, where there was hope, opportunity and jobs for everyone..
What ever happened to that Party?…Is it that today?…Far from it..only the elite eats whilst the poor suffer…..Under clouds of alleged corruption, bribery and disunity.

Rosie,…well,it would be too long to engage you.But he had a vision for Dominica, and I know factually, he helped a whole bunch of them, politically and otherwise..He empowered a lot of People…Yes,the “thugs” that killed him..(your words not mine) are running the Country today..They are reaping the fruits of his labor. And the very same “thugs”,are doing everything in their power to prevent the children of Rosie from eating bread in Dominica?..I CANNOT ACCEPT, AND WILL NEVER ACCEPT THAT.NO!..I will cry “foul”. And I will say..THIS IS WRONG AND UNACCEPTABLE!..All of Dominica should be outrage!…I,will be and always will be a DEFENDER of the CHAMPIONS OF THE PEOPLE of DOMINICA and their SONS….
ALL DOMINICANS SHOULD AND MUST EAT!..Not just a selected few…
You all memories are too short and You all are to damn ungrateful!.
We are suffering from a lack of vision and sound Leadership.
ALL FOR EACH AND EACH FOR ALL!…
      I am Aboard!……Peace be unto ALL….

It is that Kim feels owed something.

The Douglas family were an integral part of the Freedom Part and Labour Party.

Mike & Rosie left the earth earlier than expected after contributing a lot to the Labour Party in their dark days.

Having said that, no Douglas is being forced to support the DLP or run for electoral office.

I expect nothing from the DLP, and I get nothing.

With regards to G.O.N. house, who cares?

His father gave his entire life to the service of others. Neglected his children because he felt that they had options. Yes he is owed something. Most of us with parents in out lives never give a damn about others, but his father in particular care more than any other. The labour party very well owe the Douglases some gratitude. There would never be a DLP today if they the Douglases did not sacrifice family and fortune for the lover of Country. Never in the history of Dominica did any family give so much. So kim have a right to express his feelings, by gullily he is a Dominica and the child of one who paid the ultimate, his life for love of country. Laborite on the edge I concur with you. The article would have been great if the focus was not on the Douglas. I agree the opposition must be more effective to allow for an educated and meaningfull debate on progress and ways to make Dominica a more
Prosperous country. I wonder how many critics read the official gazette, the budget or even listen to the house of assembly, these forums could aid in the transperancy issue to some extent. When people write articles with an intent to inform, statistics and sources needs to be included to provide credibility to the information. Crime has increased from what to what where us the stats. Could it mean that the new age information highway is making the sparse crimes to appear more abundant. Crime is wrong however I would like to see the stats. Personal issues with the Prime Minister is not enough.

With all due respects to the Douglas boys, slash and burn will not make it.Personal vendetta is not going to win you the support of the masses. Yes, we want good governance, transparency and accountability. We want every Dominican to be gainfully employed whether through government, private sector or self employed as farmers or small/large business entrepreneurs.

While you, (Kim Douglas) have praises for Matt and Lenox, we must “rest assured he, (Hon. Ian Douglas), will not escape the wrath of my pen”, you stated. Then you went on to state further, “I have personal story to tell about my experiences with feeling victimized and wronged by this very administration. I will reveal myself in due time”.

You talk of Rosie’s revolutionary blood in Tiyani’s veins. Brother, revolutionary blood is not a hereditary trait. You have to earn your stripes. Rosie sacrificed his studies in Canada to pioneer change. His struggles went beyond ‘Black Power’ to embrace the anticolonial struggle.(Read Chains or Change by Rosie Douglas). Fidel was a law student from the upper class. Che Guevara was a doctor. They put their lives on the line for the revolutionary cause. Here you are lamenting about your personal experiences of victimization and that of your brother and cousin!! Please!! Sensationalizing the news does not make you a revolutionary.

We do have work to do. Ian must be steadfast and disciplined. Para Reviere, Bernard Wilshire, Brewster, Athie, and the rest of the so called left, did not understand why Rosie would support Premier Patrick John, Finance Minister Michael Douglas, O.J Seraphin, Vic Reviere and the rest of PJ’s government, in demanding independence for Dominica. They called him sellout. They didn’t understand Maurice Bishop and Michael Manley. Their allegiance was to Bernard Coard in Grenada and to Trevor in JA. Now you are doing the same to Ian by questioning his brand of politics.

Neither Para nor Wilshire has won any election in Dominica. Pierro won when he finally joined Rosie’s coalition. If you guys want to wither in the political wilderness, playing intellectual revolutionaries, go ahead and trash Ian. The man has work to do and the DLP is the best vehicle to achieve our goals as a people. Forget the personal vendetta. That’s just cannon fodder for Matt, Lenox and the UWP. We have to get the DLP back on track. We are embarrassed by the charges of corruption, favouritism, nepotism, mismanagement and what have you. We have to make the DLP worthy of Dominican’s support. Anything short of that is betraying the ideals for which Rosie fought.

If the hierachy of the party does not change its course and start listening to the cry of the people for employing more Dominicans, fight crime agressively, have transparent contracts and MOU’s, fight corruption and let the Cabinet govern by concensus, then we act accordingly. Despite DLP’s short comings, we must be vigilant and avoid throwing our achievements to the wolves. They have been circling the wagon. We made Roosevelt Skerrit a Labourite and Prime Minister. We are not leaving. We will take back our party. He better straighten up or be gone. But you are being unfair to Ian. Then again, you guys are neither revolutionaries nor politicians. Your immaturity shows. (Kim, I love the videos. Some are very funny). Sorry if I offend anyone including ADMIN (for the length of my rant).

Should he just stay out of Dominica and enjoy the sweet life that the Government’s scholarship money provided for him to enjoy (and I am referring to you). If you are ok with abandoning ship then to each his own, but Kim does have a reason to be outspoken because his DNA via Rosie Douglas and Mike Douglas has done much more for Dominica than your Blackmoore DNA, now be a true daughter of the soil and fight for your country. Stop saying how much you love your country while developing somebody else’s and go back to Dominica and actually make a difference.

  31. Laborite on the edge
    August 13, 2011

Great article Kim; however, portions of the article whether valid, distract from the essence of what I think you intended. Namely, political vicitmization, especially since your examples are all about family members. It can appears very partisan.

As a once strong supporter of this present government for many years I too have some concerns. Please allow me to echo some of your very ably worded messages. 1. The lack of an effective opposition. No democracy can survive without a strong effective opposition. UWP and Freedom parties should recognize they would be more effective engaging rather than isolating themselves from the leading party. Take the peoples assembly to the house of assembly and debate there. Instead of constantly playing the victims role or playing the game of who has more lawyer and can file the most suits provide intelligent, thoughtful alternatives and you will win the people over. Praise when praise is due and offer alternatives otherwise. Organize, or at least appear organized. Many persons have serious reservations about the current government but don’t see an alternative. If you do so you will be greatly rewarded . 2. Ian, although a friend, is an ineffective leader and Portsmouth people should insist of a change in representative (labor or otherwise). 3. Corruption is corruption and no amount should be acceptable, especially from your government. This will only destroy our regional and international reputation and therefore stifle any growth and foreign investments in the country. This is a similar problem American cities like New Orleans (great city), Newark and Detroit have been battling for many years. 4. Crime on the island appears to become more and more sophisticated, brutal, and visible especially in the advent of the internet. Much like the later it destroys our reputation and by extension, growth. Something needs to be done about this NOW. We the people need to draft letter of concern and suggestion to the commisioner and our representative. Your leaders will lead as your direct them.

Finally, we as Dominicans need to be more open to immigrants be it Chineesze, Haitans, Lebaneze, Dominicans .R or Americans. Dominica is greately underpolulated and drastically needs to increase it population in order to be able to grow and compete regionally and internationaly. Investors should be thorougly scutinized but welcomed if deemed acceptable.

    Thanks

Please form a new party. Give us the representation that we are not currently getting from the present opposition but please stop with the same old politics and the same old issues which to MOST Dominicans have very little or no merit. At least if you all are going to continue these old tired issues let us also hear of plans and ideas for development of the island.
While many Dominicans are in favor of retaining the services of your brother as magistrate we have to agree if we want to be honest that he does have some skeletons in his closet therefore, the government is not entirely at fault in their decision not to renew his contract. To me all I am seeing is more of the same politics and the opposing forces intensifying their recuitment efforts in order to cause civil unrest in their country but in the meantime they have not gone back to the drawing board to find ways to develop the country. When they finally get what they want then what? We will be able to boast that we are hungry, have a very dim future but at least we have integrity which I doubt very much judging by their behaviour they have. They are not and have never put country first. It is get in power whatever the cost, we will deal with the consequences later. That to me is very selfish.

@ De Opposition. You have to note that the plans and ideas for development of the island you would want to hear about should come from the Government and not the Opposition. The opposition is there to follow up and oppose what is wrong and should stop. It is not the Opposition’s responsibility to bring plans forward to the Government or for the Government. Where are the plans the Government outlined before you when you were going to the poles. This is what you should be asking today. They outlined their plans, their plans sounded reasonable to you, you gave them the power to be in Government to implement the plans. So if you are disappointed in them don’t blame the opposition

People claimed this is the most corrupt government but that’s based on repeated unproven, baseless accusations from Lennox, Mr. James, Ron Green and a few others who offer no alternative and oppose even things that benefit Dominicans.

The country has seen lots of development and has made strides in Education. One mistake the government has made is putting Dr. Peters as the President of the College (one who jumped ship because Freedom said no to him as their leader in 2009)… The College has now gone two to three years back in the one year he’s been there…

I live outside Dominica and only know what i hear or read in the news. But i grew up in the rosie mike era. These guys really stood out for the people in many ways those thier now can’t even measure.I hate politics but i totally agree and aplaud the comments of sean and kim.On the subject of law enforcement alone is enough to see something is very wrong with the present administration.Priorities are certainly not in order because to have a stable state u have to have law and order and that is non existent in dominica at this time. It’s about time we realise what’s happening in dominica,it’s begining to feel like a gadafi regime to me. I AM ON BOARD WITH BEHANZIN SEAN AND KIM.ARE U?

Looking at things objectively, every individual against this administration ( trust me I am not an advocate for them).. Seems to have a sensational speech to present on paper, but I ask! Where is the substance, where is the compelling evidence against them!
It is all well and good to appeal to the emotions of the masses but as one of the fellow bloggers ( 4 Real) stated, no one owes anyone a darn thing because of past alliances.
If you are interested in the welfare of Dominica and its people then come up with and present a plan, show how you plan to Implement change, state and put your signature to the ideas that you have.
I WILL STAND BY MY BELIEF THAT ALL POLITICIANS ARE THE SAME ( Tricksters).

It is the job of theCITIZENS to keep them in check. However, when we allow common sense and morals to be blinded by party affiliation, then the chaos that now plagues the Dominica political scene will thrive….

My people do no be deceived by your colleagues, tand up for what is right and give credit where credit is due..

Leaders do not deceive the people, let your legacy be one of transparency and democracy as opposed to amassing wealth and victimization!!

Sorry Kim..Dem name games are over. You are who you are I am who I am.Those days of you are Mr.so and so are done.Due respect to Rossie but come better than that.Don’t come disguising under Rossie’s name. Are we in a Doughlasism Era?All you all do is bla-bla-bla.None of you who oppose or critize never come with a laid out plan to the Dominican people about how you intend to better the present situation you all claim to be so corrupt. All of you are a bunch of angry, hungry political parasites in search for POWER.

So the Labour Party was private property of the Douglases. I thought it was the estate of RBD?

It has begun. Let freedom reign. I believe that we still have freedom of speech in Dominica!!

Again I make the observation that no matter what is said or revealed, the majority of our people continue to live in denial. There is nothing wrong in opposing your party. If your brother is heading down the wrong road, it is your duty to lead him back on the straight and narrow path. Victimization is a reality and no matter how blind we remain, it will continue. I campaigned labour party, I voted labour party. That does not prevent me from seeing the continued inconsistencies with what I campaigned. Disappointment does not even explain it. I would still like to see them pick up the pieces and right the wrongs.

With this said, no man or woman is beyond correction. The Douglas family can be equated to the Kennedys. They have been part of our political history and we cannot forget. If Mike did not keep freedom party in check, I do not know where we would be. I applaud every one who has the testicular fortitude to speak up. I have not had any experiences to speak of but my eyes are wide open. I have no issues with development but at what cost? I will not sell my soul to the devil for road, petrol, villas or state house.

I read these articles from guys I know and respect (well Kim, not so much Sean) and I see potentially credible reasons to question the integrity of the reigning administration.

The problem for the UWP (and Dominica) is that even with these issues floating around I still have absolutely no real reason to believe that Old Man Ron, Trouble-maker Edison or the clearly in-over-his-head Sprags are worthy of being the replacements.

The UWP sucks and its only Lennox’s obsession with Skerrit that’s keeping the party relevant and from its deathbed. IMHO.

All on broad what? to go back to the days of the Douglas one of the bigger names in Dominica and that would put food on peoples plate, a roof over someone head, buiild road, send kids to college, water system and help the poor. What was so good or great back in the days that Dominicans should go back to. Days of lack of water to homes, poor road or lack of roads, No stadium, a few with so-call names to go to college, universities, the very few with houses, cars. Please someone tell me WHAT WAS better we should want these HAS BEEN want us to go BACK to. Sorry KIM, things come and go sorry if the DOUGLAS CLAN is no more. Thank to Some of the Douglas who made their MARK and did welcome for Dominica. But we don’t owe the Douglas name anything. There is no pass just for having a NAME. I have not ready anything where you proving anything, you people are singing the same old song, please give us some evidence not just talk. STOP BEING A MAMA LOOK

I fore see the Douglas/es moving away to form their own political party in the future. This is what I sense from the trend with the Douglas/es.

We have been waiting for a shake up in politics in Dominica. Since the oppositions have fallen asleep. Am revived and ready to roll. Rosie did not raise any fools. To all the Labourits waiting for an opportunity to bail out, now is the time to speak out. This is our Dominicans. I love this.

that is how it is now. When someone exercise their democratic right to free speech they are labelled a cry baby. That is just the beginning more of us will come and speak out against a corrupt government and a very weak opposition.

When Hector John should be concentrating on providing meaningful opposition, he is on facebook talking to nonsense.

Kudos Kim!! The intelligent young man I debated against in high school is very present and your words are not just embellishment, rather they are alluding to the true picture of what Dominica is fast becoming. I admire you and Sean for coming forward, and what the present government needs to realize right now is, it takes one man to start a revolution (not like London, but a peaceful movement for change). When the qualified, educated people begin to speak, the rest will follow. This train will pick up speed quickly and like Rosie, the masses will do what needs to be done to better our beautiful country. Dominica needs its sons and daughters to speak on her behalf, so speak brother, speak and the rest will fall in line!!!

Who the hell is Kim…There is a song like this….but here is what I got from her ramblings…

“This brings me to the question of the climate of victimization and “Douglas Marginalization” which is becoming very evident.”…The crux of the matter

    • Anonymous
      August 13, 2011

Can one define the Douglas marginalisation. Is there some theory to this. Being a Douglas should not be a ticket for entry into the Labour Party. Entry should depend on skills, effectiveness and qualifications.

No one owns the Douglas family anything, least of all Roosevelt Skerrit. The Douglas if they feel so wronged should come together and form their own political party, but i am sure this will be impossible in the same way that they are unable to come together to develop their estate for it to yield economic benefit.

Stop lamenting. Rosie and Mike are no longer, and the young generation has no idea who they are. It is you all to keep your ancestors memory alive, not the Labour Party

Well since we singing I will respond “what foolishness you talking, you better check yourself and go and check your health” because Kim is MALE and not a fool. Ramblings you say? What about the ramblings of the PM when he cannot answer a question with a direct answer or when he hides behind Tony Astaphan? The problem will persist because people like you want to keep getting handouts rather than urge the government to provide jobs for the citizens of the country.
