Caribbean electorate: Not for sale

General elections in St Lucia and Guyana on November 28 have raised serious questions about the financing of campaigns and the unfair use of state resources by governing political parties to gain an advantage over their opponents.

In St Lucia, it is alleged that a significant portion of the United Workers Party (UWP) campaign funds came from Taiwan.  The UWP was the ruling party at the time of the elections and the then leader of the Opposition and leader of the St Lucia Labour Party (SLP), Kenny Anthony, had engaged in a public row with the Taiwanese Ambassador over his blatant interference in the electoral politics of the island.

The UWP, have been fighting the wrong campaign.
They should have have spent the last two years pointing out to the people what they did and wanted to continue to do for Dominica and Dominicans generally, instead on going on the personality hate campaign.
Taiwan and China have their politics, we should not be caught in the middle. For now we have the milk the cow that giving mil, and is China that producing but we have to be smart, that we use the milk wisely, so when the cow stop milking we have something of our own to get the milk from.

I take exception to this statement as in Dominica the situation is reversed. In spite of the very very poor performance of the DLP administration Dominicans are still chanting Leave our prime Minister.

I am not judging the government’s performance based on the scandals and corruption allegations, nor am I judging performance based on the lack of transparency and accountability. However It would be remise of me to pretend that the state of the Dominica economy is unrelated to allegations of corruption and opaqueness. Detractors are more than happy to fight the battle on the grounds where they feel that solid evidence of corruption have to be proven or displayed in the public market; for example Skerrit and St Jean must show case their passports in order to prove that both government officials deliberately violated the law. The battle to prove corruption serves as a decoy for the issues that really impact the lives of the everyday people. I am talking about the lack of jobs, a ruined agricultural and manufacturing industry, poor health services ; tourism stale mate- no progress over the last 14 years; increase in crime which is indicative of increased poverty.
DLP apologists are not prepared to provide evidence to support the worthiness or credibility of the DLP administration. Twelve years ago the DLP administration beat their chest about the impact of the austerity measures which is essentially the chronic stomach virus that all Dominicans are suffering from- VAT. Since this VAT we have sat by and watch our productive sector crumble into ruins. The private sector dominated by foreign interest while born and bred Dominicans are forced to give way to preferentially treated Chinese nationals.
DLP apologist cannot fight a battle on grounds that pose challenges to the work performance of the DLP administration. After 14 years the only offense coming from the DLP soldiers is ; a Chinese donated stadium, west coast road rehabilitation, canefield to Melleville Hall road project; a few sea walls. When one considers what the Freedom party did with infrastructure work within the first term of office and the job the UWP did during their only term in office the DLP apologist know well that there is no comparison at all.

In my effort to be honest with myself I recognize the importance to accept the realities of the present situation before moving on.Some of us are just to afaid to acknowledge the truth. The truth of the matter is the situation is bad in Dominica. Now that the Venezuelan and Chinese pipeline is shut we are now enduring a Millie Venally moment; We whave been merely lip sinking all these years. Now that the wind is blowing the chicken does not have enough feathers to cover it’s behind. This is the hard reality whether some of us may want to pretend that it isn’t.

I beg to differ. These are blatantly false statements. The DLP have made the most progress and development for Dominica than any other party. It is plain to see. If you want to validate your claims tell us in details what UWP and Freedom Party has done as compared to Labour Party.

It would have been smart of you to prove me wrong with some facts.I can go back in time and mention the many things that DFP and UWP did but I suspect that your intension here is to justify the underperformance of your party by the usual DLP propaganda phrase ” UWP did it so it is OK for DLP to do it too”.
If that floats your boat go sailing my friend. I would rather conversate with an intelligent person who is willing to be objective and reasonable.BYe bye

same thing in d/ca… Taiwan has been financing the UWP campaign in a hope that with their return to power that they will renounce china and turn back to Taiwan which i personally believe is a step in the wrong direction. the china route has been lucrative for the d/ca and that is the general direction in which the rest of the world is going. america no longer has the money to help or even cares to help for that matter.
