The role of the homosexual in Caribbean society has never been properly explored. We have all the names- funny, batty bwoy, nasty boy, nasty girl, anti man, buller man, chi-chi man, and tanty man, but these words are barriers to confronting the reality of the Caribbean sexual orientation revolution.
In my very small town, there were always a few men who were known to bat for the other side- at the age of ten I knew of at least three. There are also many other social indicators showing that time has indeed moved on. More seriously, many of us (including me a few years ago) cling to the Bible for justification for discriminating against homosexuals.
It’s what we have been taught. But how can we cling to a literal interpretation of a Bible that for years was used to justify slavery (in the New Testament -“slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear, serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ”) discrimination against women and racism (the “curse of Ham” was used by some members of Abraham religions to justify racism and the enslavement of people of Black African ancestry, who were believed to be descendants of Ham). I must admit I am probably not fully comfortable with and do not want to know the fine details of how two men have sex but we do not accord rights to human beings based on our personal comfort levels.
I would like to think that when Martin Luther King fought and spoke about that important promissory note that “that all men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”, he did not only speak in terms of white or black, American and Non American, gay or straight but he hoped that this could be truly extended to all. I am of the live and let live persuasion. As Bertrand Russell said “The only part of the conduct of anyone for which he is amenable to society is that which concerns others.
In the part which merely concerns him, his independence is, of right, absolute. Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign”. Invisible Life is the story of our lives. School, girlfriends, and career choices were all part of our lives, but there were other, more terrifying issues for us to confront. Being black was tough enough, but we were becoming more and more conscious of sexual feelings that we knew weren’t “right.”
We were completely committed to Societies acceptance and moral values, our parents, Family members but our attraction to same gender sex grew. After meeting during our final year of fully accepting the person we both were what we had for each other become more than just a friendship. No matter how much we tried to suppress the feeling of love for each other, our feelings were deeply sexual.
Moving from one relationship to another Anthony found himself more confused than ever before, giving him enormous pleasure but keep him from finding the inner peace and lasting love he so desperately desires. While Glenroy on the other hand, was very much into the party scene and failing to realize life’s worth. After meeting with Anthony, Glenroy now realize that life is much more than what he had it to be, and worked tirelessly to maintain a relationship with Anthony. After an amazing three (3) months of preparation, the final day was here and the wedding ceremony proceeded.
Through the trials and tribulations leading up to the wedding and after Glenroy Marshall and Anthony Marshall-Williams decided to be the voice of countless gay lesbian folks trapped in loveless relationships and marriages, doing what they do best for the sake of an “image “that floats tentatively on a quivering body of nerves and air.”

I actually sat here and read through some of the responses and I am actually sickened by some of the comments made. The ignorance surrounding sexuality and religion is astonishing. I have read comments that homosexuality is unnatural because reproduction is impossible and maybe that is the case, but a list of heterosexual practices can be considered unnatural because reproduction are not the result of the activity. So before you talk about homosexuality as being unnatural I will ask you to ask yourself about kissing, maybe even blowjobs and answer the question as to how many kids have been born from those activities let alone.
Another thing that I find insulting is the quoting of biblical passage to justify hatred and intolerance among people. There is this assumption that what the bible says is the truth and that it is the word of god, but one must keep in mind that it was written other two thousand years ago. It has been rewritten, translated, and various texts dropped other the course of time. Now what remains is only a fraction of the original. One must also keep in mind that there are words in our language now that were not available two thousand years ago.
In another thing that bugged the hell out of me is that many of the commentators seem to have forgotten that gays are people to. They can be your brother, sister, children, spouse or even parents. For the most part gay people are like everyone else.
God say to leave all judgement to him. We are all sinners, from Adam and Eve to present.What each person decides to do with their life is up to them, however, I sit there and wonder what is society coming to. Like I said, do what you want with YOUR life but there is no way on this Godly earth that I think it is ok for you to teach my kids it’s ok to be gay. Even in the school system kids are being taught it is ok to be gay. Man and man cannot reproduce nor can woman and woman. If God meant for people to be gay he would have created Adam, Eve and Steve and say “Adam choose one or both”.

This is a well constructed argument, but I must disagree with several points you made, especially the bible. There is the so called “justification of slavery” in the new testament. This is false for the following reasons. Firstly, the term here originally used is “Servant”. If you study Jewish culture at the time of Paul, you would know that it was illegal to own slaves (an individual under dominance of another to do his bidding as property). All servants were paid, treated with respect and honor by their owners (see the Prodigal Son). Even in the Old testament there were many rules and regulations in favor for the treatment of servants. Europeans used the bible in support of slavery even though they had very weak arguments. In fact, the Catholic church fully opposed slavery and used the bible to denounce it, until the European economy began to develop due to slaves. Christian men like William Wilberforce were at the spearhead of the abolition of slavery in England, with his bible tightly tucked under his arm. As for discrimination against women (which has been a problem with society, not based on anything commanded) and racism (absolutely not supported by the bible), these are more “arguments” which are used by people to serve their own desires.
Did Bartoleme Las Casas, the Catholic priest who thought fought for the liberation of the amerinidian slaves, say use the Africans instead as oppose to Slavery in its entirety is wrong. The Catholic church at certain points in our Caribbean History had slave holdings.
It must be noted that the Catholic Church’s official position is that it is wrong for people to have sex, unless they are married, and since only Man and woman can get married, Homosexuality naturally must be wrong.
But most people are not concerned with these specificities are they?

Before you talk about the bible and recommend what it says, go and study about the bible. Find out who wrote the bible and when and why. There is no need for people to be stupid anymore. Most people can read for themselves and the information is bursting on the internet. If you are not too lazy to research it then go an research it. I think there is too much fear about homosexuals, which is unjustifiable. I am not advocating for legal marriage for homosexuals, but I adovocate that we must stop denigrating them. They are human beings and therefore are entitled to dignity and respect. Many of us would change our attitudes if we know that a best friend, a brother or sister or next door neighbour is gay. But because of society’s condemnation and even violent reaction, they live in fear of being discovered or admitting to their sexual attraction to the same sex
They lose the ability to command respect and dignity when they start partaking in these evil and filthy deeds. If a person wants to be respected he needs to be respect-able. The fight we have on our hands is that these people are trying to make an evil deed appear to be respectable when it is not.
