This article is written as an appeal to all Dominicans, at home and abroad, particularly to all our institutional, spiritual, community and political leaders and all journalists and personalities in our print,electronic and broadcast media houses to heal our nation!!!
It is a call to action on a daily basis to reconcile and heal all our people at home and abroad from the vicious spiritual, social and mental cancer of party political and religious tribalism, prejudice,hatred and intolerance which seriously threatens to destroy the very fabric of our society at every level. Please, let us all work daily to heal our nation, for the sake of our children and their children!!!
No leader or person should be too big to genuinely seek forgiveness , mercy and to appologise to anyone who one has offended in any way. Reconciliation also involves correcting the wrong or injustice which one may have caused !! It is this Godly humility which makes one truely great and wise!
This is true Love !!!
Also, I write this article to beg and plead with all our political and religious leaders, as well as all journalists and media personalities to be more sober, professional, statesmanlike, humble, consiliatory and patriotic in our public and private utterances and daily lives; so that the peace and tranquility of our beautiful nation will be restored and edure for the good of all of us and our children.
As citizens we can disagree respectfully with dignity without becoming disagreeable, destructive or personal !!! Our nation needs a real chance to settle down and focuss our energies on achieving long term socio-economic prosperity for all our people, as children of The One Almighty God created in His image and likeness !!! We must work together daily to raise the spiritual, social, cultural,moral and intellectual consciousness of all our people ,at home and abroad ,to achieve this noble goal!!!
Firstly, we all need to clearly understand that The Commonwealth of Dominica is a free, democratic and sovereign nation state established UNDER ALMIGHTY GOD after the West Ministerial Model as of November 3rd ,1978. The foundation of the democratic sovereignty of our nation resides in the People of The Commonwealth of Dominica, both at home and abroad, and not in any single political party , leader and /or media personality of any kind. One of the ways in which this sovereignty is expressed and made manifest is through the collective will of the people every five years at the ballot box in general elections which must be free ,fair and transparent. That will of the people was very clearly expressed in the December 19th, 2009 general elections !!!
The second most important manifestation of our democratic nationhood is our God Given free expression of conscience, free speech in all forms , the free media, intellectual freedom, free movement and free religion and worship of Almighty God within the confines of our national constitution and dignified human reason as established by CARICOM, The UN ,The OAS and other civilized global organizations. It must be very clearly understood that these freedoms are for the use of all citizens , not as weapons of tribal war, hatred or prejudice!!! These freedoms are God given to be used to build and prosper the nation for the benefit of all our people at home and abroad !!! They were not meant to be weapons of war and/or self destruction!!!
These are the principles and norms which must at all times guide all stake holders within our media houses, political and religious organizations here in Dominica and throughout the Caribbean in our daily exercise of the powers of the offices within the media, legislative, judiciary and executive branches of our Government ,as well as all our churches and other religious organisations. Ethical conduct , Godly morality, justice for all , fairness ,sound ,mature and well reasoned judgement are the heart and soul of these founding principles of democratic governance. The very future of our nation depends on these principles !!!
Secondly, the Art and Science of Democracy is and has always been the ability of citizens of a democratic nation to disagree respectfully. Political philosophers like Hobbes have contended that a civilized democratic society will make significant progress only if it promotes the art of respectful descent at all levels of society. All ideas must always be allowed to contend freely so that the very best ideas can emerge in the final analysis.
It is this free flow of diametrically opposed ideas which has allowed Political Science , as well as all other sciences, the arts, Information Technology, Educational Sciences, Engineering and all other fields of study to evolve , flourish and so facilitate the socio-economic prosperity of all grate nations and civilizations such as The US, Canada and much of Europe.
The tragic state of affairs in Dominica, at this very moment, is that the free flow of contending views at all levels of our Public and Private Sector Institutions has for far too long been held hostage by the cancer of diabolical party political and religious tribalism , the short sighted cut -your -nose -to spite -your -face attitude, pettiness, a diabolic cult of self destructiveness and prejudice which must be ended once and for all at every level of our society ,if we are to progress as a nation. Is this how we ,as a society, hope to search for truth justice , peace and socio-economic development??? This is holding back the socio-economic progress of our nation !!! It is backwardness personified !!!!
The apostles of this most venomous form of mental and spiritual slavery who hide behind their party political , religious and media stripes of every shade have been wrecking havoc on the minds and souls of their flock as they divide and rule our people’s minds and souls and this nation, starting even before independence in 1978 and for decades since !!!. They come in every shade of social class , profession, political and religious organization. The result is that ,the very fabric of our society has been savaged by these monsters as they build their kingdoms of straw not realizing THAT ALL IS VANITY AND AN ABOMINITATION AND VEXATION TO THE SPIRIT !!!! THIS WILL SURELY BRING GOD’S WRATH ON OUR NATION AND SWIFT JUDGEMENT ON THOSE RESPONSIBLE !!! FOR WHAT SHALL IT PROFIT A MAN OR WOMAN TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD AND ,IN THE END, LOSE ONE’S SOUL ???
This spiritual and mental cancer is daily eating away at every piece of humanity, integrity, dignity, peace and progress of our society at every level and the daily life of our people at home and abroad !!! This is exactly why our people are quickly losing our basic Godly civility, sense of oneness, brotherly and sisterly love, peace and tranquility and respect for everything descent. This has gone much too far !!!
Some of our political and religious leaders, journalists and media personalities have thrown objectivity,fairness,integrity, patriotism, balance and professionalism out the window !!! Instead they are daily doing great violence to everything sacred , holy, good ,moral and upright about Dominica in a slash- and- burn style !!!! How, may I ask, can we expect our youth to be non-violent with role models such as these ??? The youth learn every bit of their violence from what, we as adults , especially parents, say and do; and whta we adults fail to say and do daily for the betterment of our society.
Also, some of us adults fail to guide our youth in truth and righteous living as a direct result of our selfish, roofless and lawless daily life and bad example !!!! Some of our religious and political leaders and media personalities consistently bombard our youth through the media with a menu of hate , anger and all forms of verbal and emotional violence; then they wonder why the youth take drugs, commit suicide, murder, steal, fight and injure each other at home , school and in public places daily across Dominica and the Caribbean. It is time to wake up and smell the coffee !!! We have to give Love Joy and peace and the other fruits of God’s Holy Spirit a chance to take root in our nation , particularly among our yoputh!!! Our youth only practice what they see adults do daily at home ,in parliament, on the streets, on television, at schools and in every day life !!!! We adults need to speak to the youth with our daily life of eghteous,upright healthy living !!! Empty words are just not enough !!!!!
Finally, in the words of Martin Luther king Junior:
“Let us all ,as the Children of One God work daily to ensure tha this nation will rise and live out the true meaning of its dream.”
Let freedom ring from every mountain top and every corner of this land so that Dominica can become a great nation.
Dominica is the Land of The Lord Almighty; so let all our people at home and abroad, as God’s children, acknowledge the common humanity and dignity of all!!!

mr gordon why did u have to put this in… whenever such happenings are questionable then it is expected that people especially those as yourself with intellectual influence not show or tend to show support to ‘questionable or corrupt’ occurences…. the vast number of claims… the they do so we do to scenarios… makes it clear that the ‘will of the people’ was not exercised during elections… in the future mr gordon it will be in the best interests of all of us… that you do not seem or seemingly show partisan support.. even if it would be borderline…

I agree in principle with Aurelius. All of us must learn a thing or two from Aurelius’s submission. The truth though. Many things mostly allegations are said about our leaders. When the leaders, particularly the PM does not answer to these allegations it is interpreted as being Gospel – the whole truth. When the leaders (PM) respond, it is said that the government want to stifle free expression. Those who offer explanations on behalf of the pm are referred to as “attack dogs”, hezbullah fanatics etc, etc. When those who make the accusations of wrong doing are asked to present the evidence in support of their claim, (which is really fundamental to our democratic and judiciary system) the court and its officers come in for scandalous assaults on the intergity of the system that has served all of us for many generations. When as yet unfounded allegations are made about wrong doings in public office and calls are made for disrupting the good order and peace of our society, we hear precious little condemnation except by a few. Once that few respond to calls for “boots on the ground” then we get wide brushes of general commentaries condemning attempts to stifle dissent but lacking in any specifics. Case in pint. The East Caribbean Court has come in for a lot of cricism from those who have had “bad days, weeks, months and now years in court”. The names and character of the justices have been torn into pieces by the elctronic wing of the opposition. Yet still those who serve at the highest level in the court have never offered a word in defense of the system in which they operated and in whch their former collegaues operate and fucntion. I am aware that the system has not changed. If anything, they have added fuel to the fire of condemnation of the judiciary by their very general writings and commentary. In most instance attempting in a veil manner to stay on the high road, but the innuendos are clear for all to see. They seem never to hear any politically motivated criticism of the judicial system where they functioned at its highest level. So what has happend to the very democratic institutions here? Every institution of the state apparatus have been desecrated by those who wish to run the affairs of Dominica. From the Presidency to the Civil Service, every organ of state of them have been deemed to be corrupted by one man – Skerrit. Yet still we see or hear precious little by the operatives in the system.Even the church/clergy have added their bit with wide brushes of morality and ethics – no specifics
Yes, I agree in priciple to my friend’s thought provoking piece and belive there is food for all of us. We all can make the difference if we examine our seves and our role in making Dominica that peaceful place. Let us condemn the threat to place boots on the ground. Let us condemn the destruction of our institutions by unwarranted cricisms, let us speak boldly, with unchecked tongues about the ills that all of us are involved in. Mr Gordon, I commend you on a well thought out comment, but rest assured as the political ills continue in this Dominican society where a few who surround the political ruling class are the only ones that are successful there will never be healing in this nation, we all live here and we see how men whom we use to respect and see as role models of our society are part of the ills taking place from the top, we would expect them to speak up and correct it but no they prefer to join the gand, in order for your comment to bear fruit you must first address the root of the problem where it exist, you are hearing the cry of the person in the communities or as one deceased politican Mike Douglas would say the different publics are at the mercy of our politicians. THERE WILL NEVER BE HEALING AS LONG AS THE SITUATION CONTINUES TO GET WORSE.

Those rights of freedom do not come from any god. The gods of religions take away our freedoms by telling us what to do–enslaving us, in other words. This is self-evident; and yet our people happily ignore it. True freedom comes from the philosophy of existentialism, in which we make meaning in our life, since our life has no fundamental meaning in of itself. This is not a sweet or happy view of life but it is most likely the truth. We must wake up and re-examine the things so many of us take for granted. I know there are other Dominicans who believe this!

I am not trying to be negative to such an eye opening article but knowing you as a person i have to ask myself whats the motive, Are you afraid of telling your party collegues to their face that is time to stop the prostituting of Dominica , the island you claim to love so much . According to the great Peter tosh there will be no peace without justice. Its time that mr. Emanuel get some justice ,what about the registry – passport case scandal, has it dissappeard as the grapevine suggested it would have . how comes justice seems to be so fast on one side of the fence but slow and painstaking so on the other side. Justice delayed is justice denied. Why our leaders who know they have commited a moral sin if not criminal one make their passports available , and not try to hide behind legal curtains to keep the truth away. I think its time you get to the point because you know the issues and stop trying to pretend that you are different or want different , birds of a feather flock together . Are you still the prospective candidate for marigot in the next election on the labour train or is it that your friend has decided not to back down. It would be nice sir, if you could clarify this for the Dominicans who may actually love your article. The integrity of the messenger must sometimes be questioned to see the genuine-ness of the message. These are very good comments,but truely human being have no love, if there is no love in us. it makes no sense. love comes first, then every thing flow in line. it not only Dominicans,there are hatres greed,jealousy too much to mention. I personly finding myself being close down to people, I was never like this. but from bad experiment, you shut yourself from people. during cxmas. I felt cxmas in the stores,in my home. When cxmas arrive in my neighbour hood you see no one.every one lock in there houses,no one to say merry cxmas too. I miss the caribbean.It’s a mean world.
