COMMENTARY: Should Prime Minister Skerrit seek treatment for Hubris Syndrome?

Skerrit

By JERRY BRISBANE

Lord Owen retired politician and physician in his book “The Hubris Syndrome, Bush, Blair and the Intoxication of Power” defines power as a privileged opportunity to influence and sometimes determine, the turn of events. It is a heady drug which not every political leader has the necessary rooted character to counteract.

The Greeks developed the notion of Hubris to explore this aspect of the powerful. A hubristic act was one in which a powerful figure, puffed up with overweening pride and self-confidence, treated others with insolence and contempt. They seemed to get kicks from using their power to treat others in this way, but such dishonouring behaviour was strongly condemned in ancient Greece.

In Greek drama, according to Lord Owen, a hubristic career developed somewhat like this. The hero wins glory and acclamation by achieving unwonted success against the odds. The experience then goes to their head: they begin to treat others, mere ordinary mortals, with contempt and disdain and they develop such confidence in their own ability that they begin to think themselves capable of anything. This excessive self-confidence leads them into misinterpreting the reality around them and into making mistakes. Eventually they get their just deserts and meet their nemesis, which destroys them.

Nemesis is the name of the goddess of retribution and often in Greek drama the gods arrange nemesis because a hubristic act is one in which the perpetrator tries to defy the reality ordained by them. The hero committing the hubristic act seeks to transgress the human condition, imagining themselves to be superior and to have powers more like the gods. But the Gods will have none of that so it is they who destroy them. The moral is that we should be aware of allowing power to go to our heads. The Greeks knew that the gods whom we might refer to as reality do not stand for Hubris and demand humility.

In its modern usage, hubris denotes overconfident pride and arrogance; it is often associated with a lack of humility, not always with the lack of knowledge. An accusation of hubris often implies that suffering or punishment will follow, similar to the occasional pairing of hubris and nemesis in the Greek world. The proverb “pride goes before a fall” is thought to sum up the modern definition of hubris.

Owen says that Hubris Syndrome is almost an occupational hazard for leading politicians and is associated with key external factors such as holding substantial power, minimal constraint on the leader exercising such personal authority; and the length of time they stay in power. Furthermore the havoc which hubristic heads of government can wreck is usually suffered by the people in whose name they govern.

He gives examples of two different forms of Hubristic syndrome in the manner and conduct of former US President George W Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair during and after the war in Iraq.

Owen claims that the behavioral symptoms in a head of government which might trigger the diagnosis of Hubris Syndrome typically grow in strength and are represented by three or four symptoms from the following tentative list.

1. A narcissistic propensity to see their world primarily as an arena in which to exercise power and seek glory;
2. A predisposition to take actions which seem likely to cast the individual in a good light—i.e. in order to enhance image;
3. A disproportionate concern with image and presentation;
4. A messianic manner of talking about current activities and a tendency to exaltation;
5. An identification with the nation, or organization to the extent that the individual regards his/her outlook and interests as identical;
6. A tendency to speak in the third person or use the royal ‘we’;
7. Excessive confidence in the individual’s own judgement and contempt for the advice or criticism of others;
8. Exaggerated self-belief, bordering on a sense of omnipotence, in what they personally can achieve;
9. A belief that rather than being accountable to the mundane court of colleagues or public opinion, the court to which they answer is: History or God;
10. An unshakable belief that in that court they will be vindicated;
11. Loss of contact with reality; often associated with progressive isolation;
12. Restlessness, recklessness and impulsiveness;
13. A tendency to allow their ‘broad vision’, about the moral rectitude of a proposed course, to obviate the need to consider practicality, cost or outcomes;
14. Hubristic incompetence, where things go wrong because too much self-confidence has led the leader not to worry about the nuts and bolts of policy;

Decisive leadership is an asset in politics but Owen says that the decisive leaders who are most likely to avoid succumbing to Hubris Syndrome are usually those who are careful to retain a personal modesty as they stay in power, to keep their previous lifestyle and to eschew the trappings of power. They try to consult carefully even if during that process they may not alter their opinions. Above all in a democracy, they accept that the in built institutional checks and balances should be scrupulously respected and make little or no attempt to circumvent them, whether in Cabinet or Parliament.

Finally the easiest surest way to cure Hubris Syndrome in a political leader is to leave office. Hubris disappears overnight. A respect and adherence to the democratic process also assist substantially.

I ask the question of all Dominicans especially those closest to and who say they care so much for the Prime Minister whether he should seek treatment for Hubris Syndrome before it is too late for all of us.

    all people like jerry hungry for power and would not mind being in skerrit position so give skerrit a break…if we had a problem with him being our leader we would not have put him back there for another five years…oh and by the way remember its majority that counts….and we are the majority….

      People, I’m a Trinidadian. I don’t know if the author has an agenda and or is being fair to your PM. Nevertheless, I urge you to take a look at what has happened in T&T to one Patrick Manning. Every point on Mr Owen’s checklist can be ticked and this man was leading a 54 year old party that lost (or gave up) the ability to manage their leader. He bacame the party. And the party became the opposition 30 months before an election was due on account of Mr Manning’s perceived infalibility.

      So don’t get emotional about this commentary even if the commentator may have ulterior motives. Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water, dr

    when all will be revealed, many will be stuned!

    what they think they know, will not be so.

    shame and dispair will creep in.

    what they once believed in all these years will fall apart.

    forty-thousand brothers, regrets will not make up their sum….

    all will happen in time to come. literal devices will run things.

    there will be a lot of oxymorons, sacasms and ironies… which the masses may not understand.

    and so they will basked in a false utopia.. thinking all is well… only to realised the predicarment they

    would eventually find themselves in.

    some will hold their heads and bawl- but to late shall be thy cry. if only they new…

      Pray for your Prim Minister instead of beating him down, he is a young man. He needs our support, the bible teaches us to pray for our leaders. Take the example of David and Solomon. God will not bless Dominica if we are disresprectfull to those who are over us.

      The leadership of Skeritt has taken Dominica to a new advanced and Developed level and i’m happy for that, let us work to build our country rather than giving visitors a bad impression about our people and our government. At the end of the day, we will not profit from our bad mouthing.

      We are the ones who are sinking Dominica not the PM.

      god bless skeritt

    I cannot believe that instead of focusing on developing our country, Dominica, that others use their time to tarnish the imagine of our PM and our country. I believe that Mr. Brisbane is delusional and grandiose, which suggests that Mr. Brisbane needs the psychological treatment and not Mr. Skerrit. The pattern of behaviour which was stated does not pertain to PM Skerrit and in fact, the only one that is portrayed by PM Skerrit is a high self-confidence, which I think is a positive attribute of his personality. I say this because it means that PM Skerrit is competent as a result of his self-confidence.

    Additionally, how can a PM, who is so humble, spiritual, caring and dedicated to D/ca’s development, be diagnosed with Hubris Syndrome? How can a PM who mingles with his fellow D/cans, young and old, sick and poor, be diagnosed with this syndrome? How can Pm Skerrit be diagosed with this syndrome and he hardly has the time to be on the media? How can Pm Skerrit be accused of having such a syndrome and he is selfless? Mr. Brisbane I think you need to focus on more positive things in your spare time instead of damaging the image of our dear PM. I think you have personal issues with yourself and you need to direct your energy into building up yourself and Dominica instead of spreading this bogus information and negativity among our people.

    May 20, 2010

    I read this article looking for substance but found none. Quotations and quotes and inferences do not move a country forward. As a “leader” Mr brisbane I do not not think you would accept an attack on any of your employees like this without some more substance, or at least I hope you would not. Show me one leader, yourself included who does not have hubris. It is an occupational hazzard. For you to stand up as Jerry Brisbane and what I say matters more than john public who voted overwhelmingly for the government is a case study in Hubris. So after all is said and done, I ask…..Where is the beef Jerry?

    I think Mr. Brisbane needs the support and prayers of all Dominican now. We can’t say were not warned people. Yes Jerry may be from the Merchant class but I am concentrating on what he wrote and the reality on the ground. They match!!!!!!

    With Skerrit in power and likely to remain there for a while- folks we are heading in the direction of Haiti and Somali quickly. ‘Might will equal right”. One thing Sherrit and his goons should know is that if anything happens to Jerry then they will go down quickly. So their tactics is to try to beat him down psychologically.

    Jerry appears to be giving them a run for their money and in turn this ‘Honorable’ Skerrit is using our noble house of Assemble to take out Mepeis. If this is not frightening to Dominican then maybe we all deserve what we are getting—the worst id yet to come.

    Folks Da is in trouble. Mr. Brisbane has sounded the alarm bells loud and clear. Don’t say you did not hear them. Don’t say you never realized or know.

    Thanks Mr. Brisbane for your courage and God bless you Sir.

Except a few inteeligent tesponses, every one else seem to attack mr. Brisbane himself and not his writing- when are we going to be analytical, smart, common sense laiden? The Pm is harboring all the hallarks of an aspiring dictator- the guy wen to parliament 3 times in 3 months to squeeze out the opposition voices in parliament, he hates people who are indepent thinkers, can opening disaagree with his policy. Dr. Pop, I trust that you do not refer to yourself as a Dominican because that would put you in the same illiterate and naive pool. Individuals like you and JERRY BRISBANE would rather see a leader being lead and not the opposite.

      Imaging OBAMA allowing congress to dictate every decision he has to make. Where would America be? Are you asking that the Prime Minister let his guards down and forfeit his vision for Dominica and allow some bias individuals with their own political agenda to tell what to do? What you would say then?

      …………and no, that is not Dominica for you. That may just be you.

    May 19, 2010

    That was d man when Pierre Charles was alive said to all of Dominica that you must eat dry bread and water and accept the austerity measures.

    Why then does he not accept his own medicine?

    Thing is Skerrit doh need them man like mister and dat burning people like him.

    Once he had close to a monopoly in Canefield and despite all the wolf cry poor people children bite the bullet and transform Canefield. Today Canefield people can do business in shops late at nights now. Fire them and they now have other avenues for employment.

    When mighty and big man business start going down they like to blame d government especially if d leader was a poor boy growing up.

    Education and connections can make any poor man get to the top and create a new reality for other poor man .

    What Skerrit has achieved in his young life has now become the Dominican dream for all poor man to aspire towards. Rich man now crying foul and want to say is corruption, nepotism, bribery!! Only to prevent other poor people from aspiring. For they know once poor people aspire they become the new captains of wealth, trade, commerce and industry in the land. And that is d big threat.

    The statuesque is shifting and these old bosses are quickly being replaced and so there is no longer the fear of having to beg for a job from these people and they are no longer the saviors of the infirmary – other new business people are doing their share too.

    I tend to think that Real Estate may just have a point.

    It might be better to cut your losses and have economic resources like land transfer to the highest bidder with a realistic vision as outlined by Real Estate.

  22. There are some people who can never see the good that others do, they feel that their job is to find fault, hate, demonize and call people names. why can’t we as a people allow people to lead? people do it to preachers, teachers and politicians. they find fault with everyone except themselves. this is done out of hatred and jealousy, spurred by the devil. these guys have nothing to offer the country but bitterness and hatred. their hatred will consume them. since the election, they have been on a hatred crusade to destroy all those who do not share their ungodly views. Greater is God who is leading the government that he has put in place than the devil who has filled the hearts of his enemies with bitterness and hatred.

    Mr. Brisbane’s recycling of David Owen’s psychitric manisfesto; on how absolute power corrupts, may be just a reminder of how necessary it is to have a political system anchored by checks and balances.

    Leaders who have been schooled in the Machiavellian method of political thought tend to exibit what David Owen has described. Do you know one political leader, or aspiring leader, who has not read “The Prince” or Tzu’s ” The Art of War”? I see that Mr. Brisbane may have read the “The Art of War”, because his motives may have been driven by a hidden agenda. His hidden agenda, however, becomes food for thought.

    Is the PM ruling with political discord, or is he ruling with bipartisanship, accountability, and transparency? These are questions we should occasionally ask – whether we are UWP or Labour.

    Well Jerry. have your cake and eat it. Not too long ago on “Kubuli Country” with the self same Matt on Kairi FM radio, Jerry dared anyone to take his picture. He was not even prepared to have his photograph taken. he left the program soon thereafter citing a busy schedule and remained off the air for six or so years.

    Jerry Brisbane has been attacking the PM for months now since his rebirth post 2009 general election. jerry has consistently and wihtout giving up calls him or makes reference to him as the biggest thief and liar that has ever lived. That desription of the Prime Minister by Jerry has continued for months now every Tuesday and repeated for emphasis on Sundays, this tiemon on two radio strations at that. .The Pm responded and simply ask Jerry to continue worshipping his trees before exhaling. Jerry and the UWP journalist apologist has taken the PM to task. What is worst. calling soemone a thief with no evidence or referring to someone as a worshipper of trees?

    Over 2 hours I post my comment hmmm. here goes again DNO

    Anyways Skerrit was the one who had Jerry & his family name in his tie in PARLIAMENT. He wanted to take a swipe at Jerry so he used parliament where he can’t be sued (COWARD) to claim Jerry suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because he Skerrit has learned that Jerry father used to phyically abuse him.

    When you have glass windows you don’t pelt stones.On what authority does Skerrit stand to do that? Anytime somebody doesn’t agree with him, he tries to get personal, so when people turn the tables on him he should man up too and not expect kid gloves. He lucky that’s all Jerry said, because he will mess with the wrong person who will saleh him and tear his family history to shreds. Skerrit too out of place and petty. Respect is earned, when you attack people fand their family expect you and yours to come under the same tongue whipping.

    Hey Jeffrey.

    I hope you follow Caribbean politics, in particular, T&T politics, given their upcoming May 24th election. If you do you will realize that the Caribbean politician most befitting of your Hubris Honour is Patrick Manning, a little tin-god, all covered up with hubris and cockiness. Truly, Patrick is the one to which your analysis should be applied — if you truly wish to be scientific, relevant and credible, and not merely intellectually dishonest and politically vindictive.

    “whether he should seek treatment for Hubris Syndrome before it is too late for all of us.” No Jeffrey. The PM needs no such treatment. You have misdiagnosed. Nice job with those extended quotes from Lord Owen, but Skerrit is not who he had in mind. You are Nemesis in search of Hubris. You are busy knocking an Aunt Sally of your own creation. Bitterness will get you, and those others like you, very far indeed. Keep on hating. How about working on ensuring a viable, credible Opposition Party to serve our country’s interests? Again, keep on hating !

    Nike if you read Weber I would expect you to remain on the high road and not be sucked into this parochial level of discussion. You response to Brisbane’s contribution is clearly a personal attack . This type of behavior should not be coming from someone like you. You are yet to deal with the subject at hand. We all will agree that in order for D/ca to progress our people need a mentality and attitude adjustment. Feel free to disagree with Brisbane’s assessment of the PM but do so in a respectful manner in other words – Why throw pawol or mepwis. Your behavior is a sign of weakness – weakness in that you seem empty handed and unable to present a counter argument solely on the facts presented by Mr Brisbane.

Isn’t he the one who started saying , he studied Jerry and Jerry suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because he was told Jerrys’ father physically abused him?” where was the out cry ?

    When Skerrit put himself in a situation like that, he has to take what he gets, he not above or under anybody simply because he is a PM. He can’t insult people and their families and not expect them to dole out his maypuis too. Skerrit too damn pompous and out of place.

      So obviously Jerry is using this forum to get back at Skerrit for what is being alleged by Javelin which I quoted above.

    Have you ever wonder what would make a person who is educated and can suceed in the private sector, choose rather to serve within the reigns of politics? In a democracy like ours where the freedom to exercise your constitutional duty reflected by the electorate, during an election, it is always a problem when a party has to absorb defeat, although there are no guarantees during the campaign, yet the results goes from accepting the public result to an ugly smear rhetoric that chips away at the exquisites of the person who was successful in the campaign.
    It is visious to validate that because a person vision might conflict with yours to implicate them with such malicious and corrupt theory.
    Life does have seasons, and no one person can fix the Dominican economy to please all, therefore in the light of the overall progresss that the counrty has made it will require strong men and women who are both in and out of government, with long term goals and some who have to pass the vision to others to make a project viable, in some situations it will take a goverment to end it’s tenure and to pass the banton for capital projects to be realized. Working together might be the cure for a better tomorrow. Let us keep an upbeat spirit about our future for the next generation.

You have catapulted a tiny community onto a global stage, transformed a young regional politician into a megalomanic Hitler and poured a world view into a vial of myopic insularity. Skerrit is not in a position to “grandstand” or set himself above the people; please accept his successes as representative of bold decision making and awareness of his location in the global scheme of things.

        By “grandstanding”, I mean that Skerrit is not in a position to perform merely for showmanship; he is not full of poppycock as Jerry would have one believe. The condition of Dominica demands result-oriented actions and policies, otherwise, he would be judged even more cruelly than he is at present.

      total garbage..

      “The PM ignores you”….completely false…Jerry has been attacked by the PM on 3 occasions, including during the last seating of parliament.

      “the PM said he would like the port charges reduced by 25%”…completely false…the PM said port charges would be decreased by 20%. Do you which charges he referring to? Why don’t you find out the average port charge on a 20 foot container for example. After this analyze and do the math for yourself and come back and tell us how would prices on the shelf decrease as a result?

      “you will see a reduction in prices and if you don’t there will be new blood entering the food retail business.”….hahahaha…if you ever have to go into the business that Jerry is involved in..you might come on DNO and write bigger and longer articles complaining about the very same things and much more….you know not what you speak of.

          Why is Jerry so scared of port reduction. — Who said Jerry is scared of any reduction, Jerry has said that the reduction does not lead to a drop in prices and that a reduction in duty for example would lead to a decrease in prices. I told you to find a calculator and do some maths. Educate yourself fada.

          Why is Jerry Brisbane so infatuated with a wall. — The question you should be asking yourself is why after Jerry Brisbane come out and expose the corruption related to the expenditure against the finished product, they run and try to fix it and make changes? AH? why they run and put Backo in river digging? So long project finish, hahaha.

          Why is Jerry Brisbane so ticked off by construction around D/Ca. — Ticked off at construction? Or ticked off at the blatant abuse of the country’s money which goes back into certain people’s hand through kick backs? You as a Dominican should be ticked off too, but you don’t understand these things and the long term effects it will have on your country, so accept my sympathy.

          Is Jerry tied to any of these projects.—HUH? What are you trying to say fada?

          Why is Jerry talking without Tom?—??

          Jerry there are alot of questions— Alot of follow up questions to your rubbish you letting off here…alot alot of follow up questions

  55. Mentally Disturbed
    May 19, 2010

    I’m confused. Brisbane you’re asking if the PM should seek treatment for a syndrome that nowhere in the article you saying he have or seems to have. If you think he have it say it. Or maybe it’s me that need to go back to reading and comprehension.

    • The little I know about abnormal psychology, impressed on me that Jerry Brisbane might be a little warped!

      We find the more educated people are plagued with chemical imbalances; when we do some probing, via analytically observation, we usually find that mostly all exceptionally smart people are also mentally ill.

      In that case not mentally ill to a point where they are demented ( cannot function,) however, a sudden outburst is an example of that trait. Someone said he is a medical doctor, that does not mean he cannot be filled with medical problems also.

      When I was a premed student, I sat in class with people who are mentally ill.

      At least, two of them completed medical school, and are now practicing in the field of psychiatry!

      Reading Jerry’s comment’s is like reading an angry man mind, he is throwing a tantrum, an example of an un-warranted outburst

      Anyway, all of the crap this guy is talking, came stright out of someone’s book.

        • Most people can read, however in order for someone to understand what the other person has written depends on how the person reading interprets what they read.

          I see you have a problem understanding what I said, and that is because of the way in which you interpret what I wrote.

          If we are unable to think cognitively, and respond accordingly, our understand of what we read will be minimal.

            Francisco Etienne Dods Telemaque, you’re trying to appear too intelligent on these message boards. I’m pretty sure everybody reading your comments get the same impression of you. Pardna slow you rolls and try to make your logic simple and direct.
            The problem is not me understanding what you wrote, because I did, my problem is you responding to something I wrote with some psychological analysis that have nothing to do with the question I asked, so in essence you’re just trying to show off how smart you supposed to be, and it seems like most ppl are not impressed.

    This is ridiculous.

    Based on this, any person who is in the position of power actually suffers from Hubris Syndrome and needs treatment.

    Mr. Brisbane himself should seek treatment because of his position of power within his business and how they have been underpaying Dominicans who work for them.

    i do agree that the prime minister fits into the suit just tailored there, but i see others in the political arena that would look well in it aswell. that is why i keep saying why is the prime minister the only one dat appears to us or rather some of us as having problems. 90% of our representatives are lost in the game and all need to be bench. (i hope by next election a new young virgin party is form and contest the election and do well enough to start the revolution…

    In 1965 Leblanc DLP won 10-1 when there were just 11 constituencies. In 1975 Patrick John DLP with the increase to 21 seats won 16seats to 5. In 1980 Eugenia Charles DFP won 17 – 4. In 2009 Skerrit DLP won 18-3. The difference is that there was no calls for a re-eelecion because of fraud as in the case of Skerrit.. The method of his win can cause him to feel invincible since he now thinks that it is just a matter of money which he can get from his backers in larger and larger amounts. That is what brings about hubris. The feeling of invincibility. The record of the first person to suffer from hubris is in the Bible and his name is Lucifer, the brightest and best looking angel in heaven..

    Jerry Brisbane need psychiatric help! His obsession with the PM is one that should be of concern to Dominicans. He need to get a life and allow the country to move forward. If and when the UWP wins some time in the future, he will be rewarded with those rediculous bids that he submits on government contracts. Be real Jerry and behave yourself.

    The PM and the speaker in the same Hubris Boat. The PM accused Jerry in the House and the Speaker aided him by advising him not to call names but just say the man on the radio….

    One of these days our eyes will be opened, the veil will be removed and we will see past Skerrit dimples.

    One of these days……. Something will really happen!

    Wayyyy!!!! We need to pray for our country we!!!

    • Jerry Brisbane, you need to cut your ramblings out. You people are never satisfied with anything, or anyone.

      In the day’s of Edison James, your family are one of the many who opposed the UWP, criticize and vehemently opposed the construction of the International Airport.

      I remember listening to one of your brothers, the one who drove a delivery truck for Raffoul, selling groceries on the north. He was in the Village of Wesley selling grocery’s to a relative of mine, and in the process tells us how expensive the project ( the international airport) would be.

      He was very intimidating, like a fire dragon his intention was to breath fear into those who’s attention he commanded, until the I, the kid intervened, and had him confounded since he had no idea of what he was babbling about, that was just prior to the election which the UWP lost to the late Rosie Douglas, and the coalition.

      His demeanor that day, was indeed like one drunken on the ” hubris syndrome .” He was talking a lot of crap, just as you are doing here right now, you speak as if you are an authority based on some nonscientific information, copying words you believe will impress the reading audience.

      I am here to let you know that there is nothing impressive in what you are say, a bunch of junk that’s all that is!

      And if you believe that Skerrit has caught the ” hubris syndrome, ” I think you need to examine your personal self, because you are indeed a product of the ” hubris syndrome.”

      How do I know that?

      Well, the hubris syndrome is what caused you to be born in Dominica, since it was that syndrome that took your grandfather out of St. Vincent, craving wealth, by opening his wholesale business in Dominica, where he planted your father, and your uncle on the island of St. Kitts, and on the Island of Antigua.

      I personally knows how greatly the hubris syndrome has dominated and control your family, it caused your uncle to pay his workers starvation salary, it cause your uncle Ivan to pay one particular lady worked for him in St. Kitts, for more that twenty years, in the 1972, a meager $96.00 per month.

      Think about that?

      Could you or any of your siblings survive on $96.00 dollars per month in 1972, or any given month in the 1970’s?

      He is past on now, however I will mentioned his name ” James Harris” Montserrat, worked for your uncle in St. Kitts, as his yard boy, sales man, and everything else. If your uncle is yet alive, ask him why he treated him like a dog?

      Ask him why he drove James Harris as a slave selling Carnation Milk, demanding him to sell a certain amount before he could make him the manager of his store on the island of Antigua. I will give you the answer to the question:

      It was due to the same ” hubris syndrome” that you and your entire family seems to be under it influence!

      And let me take you back to your grandfather. Your uncle if he is yet alive ask what transpired in a Restaurant in the city of St. John’s Antigua owned and then operated by a man now dead named Alfred Thoefelous Telemaque?

      I am sure that he is aware that the bill was never paid, even to the day, and it will never be paid by your grandfather from St. Vincent, since he too must have already met his demise.

      Your grandfather, was operating under the same ” Hubris Syndrome ” when he acted the way in which he did and walked our of the restaurant, the details you can obtain from your father, and uncle if they are kicking.

      I am Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque, I worked with you uncle, in your business on the island of Antigua. I sold his pharmaceutical products, his rise & shine, his Carib beer, toilet paper, the man never had a large stock of anything, yet he demanded James Harris, my self, and to other emplouees to produce blood out of stone.

      The man paid me $225.00 per month, my duties involved Salesman, Tariff Clerk, picking up the goods from the custom after I clear the goods from, and mind you I had on many occasion load the goods into the van, what caused your people, grandfather, and uncles, and even your own father to operate in the way in which they did?

      Shall we say it is all due to the hubris Syndrome?

      How did my employment end with your Uncle?

      My grand mother was 96 years old, she thought she was about to die, so she had some called me and told me that my grandmother want me to come and visit with her because she believe that it was near the time for her to check out of this world.

      I ask James Harris for some time out, he informed me that he had to talk to your Uncle Charles Brisbane about it. Though James was the Manager, he could not make a any decision without Charles interference, so what’s the point of having a manager. In any event, Charles decided I could not go and visit with my grandmother.

      Big mistake man, because nobody dictates to Francisco Telemaque what he can or cannot do. So, I left Charles, Rise & Shine ( and that a product as cool aid) anyway and went to Dominica. I stayed ten days visiting with beloved grandmother, when I returned to Antigua, and stop by a my electronic business I was setting up, I met my son, and mother there, and my son informed me:

      ” Daddy you are fired”!

      Then his mother explained to be that Charles Brisbane had fired me.

      Tell you what that’s the best thing that had ever happened to me; nonetheless Jerry, it was the hubris Syndrome that caused Charles Brisbane to show no mercy, he cared nothing about my grandmother who thought she was about to die, and simply wonted to visit with me before her demise.

      Any my grandmother lived to 103 years old and simply died from old age.

      She was born on the first day of January 1890, and expired in 1993.

      You are doing what you do best, and that is talking crap, Skerrit is a politician, and is doing what is expected of a politician, I advise you take the mort out of your eye, and let Skerrit deal with his own mort!

        CAN YOU PLEASE TAKE YOUR ARICEPT PILL THIS MAN IS SUFFERING FROM KNOW TO DAMN MUCH . BUT TRUST A TELEMAQUE THEY CAN LIE PRETTY GOOD EH! MAN GET OVER YOUR PASS AND MOVE TO THE FUTURE, STOP HATING ON THE MAN , YOU KNOW HE IS TALKING THE TRUTH. PLEASE GO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT YOUR FAMILY HISTORY , I BET IT WON,T BE A PLEASANT ONE . CANADIAN MOO-MOO. STOP BITTING THE HAND THAT FED YOU

        • Donna whosoever you are, you are an idiot, uneducated, and fictitious!

          No matter who in Wesley I asks if you exists, they respond by saying you are not known!

          The only Donna from Wesley everybody knows, is now residing in New Jersey , and she is the daughter of Ruth Donstan, I can mention her name because I will not get sued by Ruth, because her late sister Nona, the mother of my brother, and sisters were married to my late father, Hector, the one people like you provoked daily by calling him ” Canadian Moo-moo, ” whatever that means.

          And by the way Nona’s brother Kaleb, is also a ” Telemaque ” by birth.

          Call me Canadian Moo-moo as much as you like, I shall not be intimidated by your ignorant’s.

          Be reminded that I am a highly educated individual, in that I have in my possession an Associate in Science in Electronics, an Associate in Arts in the Liberal Arts, I command a Bachelor in Science in Electronic Engineering, and also a Bachelor in Science in Electrical Engineering.

          What are your qualifications?

          I am an Electronic/Electrical Engineer by profession, also highly educated in the medical field although I am not practicing medicine, I have a successful Real Estate business here in Los Angeles, tell me what are you doing with your life, and what have you accomplished from the day you were born to this day?

          You are ignorant; although I informed you the last time you try to insult me, I told you that people do not write or communicate in writing in all block letters, or upper case letters. Only people who had very little schooling or are not very well informed write in all capital letters.

          You do not even have the inelegance to understand that!

          What happen, are you stupid or something?

          Hahahahahahahaahaha!!!

          The other day you claimed that only Arnold, and his father Jones are Telemaque’s you said only they were educated, what about his son Reuben who was the very first Dominican in history to earn a PhD., did you visit my site http://www.yvonnedods.com and try to enlighten your mind as I suggested?

          By the way every bit of medical, and scientific information you read on my site came out of my academics, out of my Macadamia, it’s all in my head, what have you got in your head?

          I know we have plenty of mud and coconut water in Wesley, perhaps that’s all your small head contains.

          Continue to write in block letters, that will make you very smart.

          Now, feel free to call me Canadian Moo-moo, I like it.

          By the way I have a niece from Wesley, whom the Sr., Canadian Moo-moo raised, just as I the Jr., moomoo, she recently graduated with a Masters in Arts in Biology, what have you, her mother my sister is still Telemaque, so here you have something to talk about.

          Call us lie if you care to, however, add behind that insult ” They are very educated, and smart people.”

          ” I doh arguing wid you again er; you doh worth me time!”

    In drawing an analysis to any leader it must be noted that Lord owen was specific in his findings and his publication. He referred to Bush and Blair. He was also thorough in his research and touched on many aspects of modern day America.

    The writer of this article appears to be well-read so it is likely he is also knowledgeable on writtings of Max Weber and his organizational Theory. I would like to see another article using local businesses in Dominica as examples of Webers Theory.

    Unlike politics, I am sure the writer is well able to prepare a great artilce on that topic since he is a businessman.
