COMMENTARY: The fall of Qaddafi

Qaddafi

The long, forty two year old nightmare of Colonel Qaddafi’s brutal and chaotic rule appears to be coming to an end in Libya as rebel forces seeking his removal finally entered Tripoli last night amidst widespread jubilation and hope of a new beginning for the North African country.

A rebel representative in London told reporters that the insurgents would “look under every stone for Colonel Qaddafi (who is still in hiding) so that he could be brought to trial”.

The shocking yet predictable collapse of the Qaddafi regime appears to signal the end of one of the most brutal and capricious leaders who ruled with an iron fist and used his country’s oil wealth to bribe and corrupt a number of tiny world leaders including Dominica’s Roosvelt Skerrit who, along with his mentor Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, had been among a handful of world leaders who continued to support the Libyan leader even as the noose was tightening around his neck.

For  Skerrit in particular, the end of Qaddafi  may mean the loss of a slush fund to finance nefarious political activities intended to secure his regime. The Dominica Prime Minister, along with Denzel Douglas of St. Kitts offered a spirited defense of the beleaguered Libyan leader at a recent CARICOM meeting in St. Kitts.

Freedom and democracy loving Dominicans were appalled to see the photograph of their elected leader among those of Chavez of Venezuela, Robert Mugabi of Zimbabwe and other known  world tyrants, representing a rogues gallery of despicable leaders who stood in defiance of the will of the international community. It is if the defiant tyrants were circling the wagons in an effort shore up their crumbling regimes, or least to delay their day of reckoning.

The Arab Spring which began several months ago in Tunisia has spread to a number of countries where tyrants ruled uninterrupted: Egypt, Yemen, Syria, among others.  Suddenly a democracy movement swept aside the status quo and ushered in a longing for openness and popular participation in the governing process leading millions of people to the streets to demand their rights and an opportunity to be heard on matters affecting their daily lives.

The imminent end of Qaddafi is a shot across the bow of the remaining despots. Already the proud people of Egypt    deposed their leader and put him on trial. The image of an ailing Egyptian despot being wheeled into a courtroom on a hospital bed was powerful enough to rekindle hopes of oppressed peoples all over the globe.

To freedom loving peoples the end of Qaddafi and Mubarak of Egypt, and others who will undoubtedly follow, should mark a transition to a more normal state of affairs between the governing and the governed. The idea that a single leader can abuse his power with impunity and governs without regard to democratic principles and the rule of law is anathema in this twenty first century.

Those who seek to do so, as events in Egypt and Libya have demonstrated, will do so at their own peril. They may delay their day of reckoning for a while but not indefinitely. The forces of change cannot be arrested through bullets and attempts at annihilation. This is the option being pursued in Syria where its president is in open defiance of the popular will. It is hard to imagine how he can have a different outcome from the one experienced by Mubarak, and now, Qaddafi.

The old saying that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it should hold considerable relevance for Roosevelt Skerrit . This is a man who is devoid of any overarching political philosophy or ideology. His core beliefs seem grounded in an insane desire to rule indefinitely at any cost. And to that end he has created a political infrastructure consisting of like-minded, self-centered camp followers who have made a deliberate calculation that their survival is inextricably tied to the fate of their corrupt leader. We shall see if history will carve out an exception for them so that their corrupt practices will survive the test of time. If I were in their shoes I would not be holding my breath.

As I contemplate the fate of Mubarak and Qaddafi I cannot avoid recalling the words of a famous eighteenth century German chancellor, Otto Von Bismarck, who opined: “The river of history flows as it will, and if I put my hand in it, it is because I consider it my duty, not because I think I can change its course”.

It may well be that some of the remaining despots actually believe that they can determine the course of history. They may be oblivious of the verity spoken by the great Martin Luther King who observed that “the arch of the moral universe is long, but it tilts towards justice”.  But in the end all the mighty and those who foolishly believe that they are beyond the forces of history will be held accountable and the longer their reign, the greater the celebration will be.

President Obama’s economic policy is crippled by the big boys on Wall Street because he wants them to pay their fair share of taxes. Can you imagine if he tries to nationalize the oil fields, banks, electric power companies and to have meaningful land reform? You must be aware that Mr. Obama is called socialist. Now imagine that entire propaganda machine directed against Mugabe, Chavez and Castro.

The Human Rights issue is being used as a pretext. These governments are forced to defend themselves against CIA assassinations and sponsorship of civil disobedience and unrest. What did former Prime Minister Michael Manley of Jamaica do to deserve all the CIA financed violence and murder. Why were Human Rights champions like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh shot? Why were Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Junior so hated by the powers that be?

Sout man I am not denying your perspective has its weight, but while u are saying this in one breath, this does not justify the man killing his own people. He can just as conveniently use the victim card and blame CIA sponsorship of unrest, right now assad done kill 20000 people of his own in Syria just for protesting peacefully. Furthermore I don’t subscribe to ANY man having so much power for so long. Absolute power corrupts ABSOLUTELY. The people want change regardless of the forces that bring it about and that is the fact of the matter to me.

Jus one other thing I had to say, Obama is a Neo-capitalist his approach is one which takes the best elements of both social structures and merge them into a real solution. The powers that be are only powerful if we enable them. One thing I want Dominicans to note, particularly as pertains to them wanting to “respect” and by that the mean. Do not ask their ministers ir the PM questions: nor hold them accountable to their actions. Did u know that the president of the united states asked his people to twitter and txt and email their representatives to put pressure on them to resolve the default crisis???? every society has its good and evil. We have to decide as a people, in what manner it is that we want to be lead.

And the UN will replace him with someone worse, plus take control of all the gold (if it hasn’t been shipped elsewhere already) and oil. Great peacekeeper that NATO is, all they do is recruit armed forces from the US and Britain mainly to go into other countries, get ahold of terrorist type group members and then plot to overthrow and destroy a country.
Then what do the people there have left?

What a load of absolute crap!

This article had not been well researched, and as a result is factually inaccurate on many counts.

In addition to that, the ruthless attack of the Dominica PM is totally unjustified, and without merit.

First of all, the Libyan system of government is a “jamahiriyan” style run by people’s collectives. It’s not necessarily capitalist, nor is it communist but it’s hardly a “dictatorship” either in the true sense of the word.

Secondly, the Libyan people have an exceptionally high standard of living, political stability, and near full employment under Gadhafi in spite of the various economic embargoes imposed by the west.

Thirdly, throughout the African continent Gadhafi is seen as a visionary leader responsible for launching the United States of Africa initiative, designed to unify, modernize, and economically empower the continent by developing an African parlaiment, Supreme Court, Central Bank, free movement of goods, and people, as well as a defence force.

Fourthly, the relationship between Libya and Dominica was fostered by none other than the late Rosie Douglas in 1980, and not Roosevelt Skirret as suggested in this article. It was through the World Mathaba headquartered in Tripoli, that Rosie Douglas, as executive chairman, was able to access funds, weapons, and other logistical support to be able to assist liberation movements (TO ACHIEVE DEMOCRACY) throughout Africa, most notably South Africa, free Nelson Mandela and topple the apartheid system, an achievement ALL Dominican should be proud of…

This is why first place Mandela visited after he was released from jail was to Libya to thank Gadhafi, because at the time, America, England and most of the Caribbean considered that ANC to be a terrorist organization, while Gadhafi was the one who supported the concept of one man one vote…!

So, to say that Gadhafi “corrupted a number of tiny world leaders” is absolute nonsense. The truth is Dominica has been a friend of Libya since 1980, and PM Skerrit refused to abandon that friendship just because it has now seen as “politically correct” to do so.

THAT IS WHAT LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT” COURAGE, FEARLESSNESS, AND LOYALTY!!!!

Finally, Mr Esprit, Skerrit’s overarching ideological and philosophical outlook as about economic development, poverty eradication and equal opportunity for all Dominican’s as demonstrated by his numerous achievements in government over the years!

I predict that things in this world are only going to get worst and the people who engineered the fall of Gaddafi know exactly what they are doing.

George Bush said some positive things about Gaddafi after he handed them his “weapons of mass destruction”. The Italians, French, Germans and Americans did business with him so why shouldn’t Dominica?

Furthermore, before the NATO led uprising, what was the difference between Libya and Saudi Arabia. The Saudis beat their women into submission and the Saudi “Royal Family” controls the vast petroleum reserves. They finance terrorism around the world by funnelling funds through mosques and madrasas. Dominica, as a sovreign nation, has a right to establish bilateral relations with other sovreign nations; members of the UN, at that. Do you still want us to seek permission from our former colonial masters to determine who our friends should be?

    • 1979
      August 23, 2011

yeah, I completely get what you are saying and i agree… but i ask this….if our government was killing civilians, would u want the people who do business with our government to look on impartially and continue to enrich this kind of government??? after all we are people too…

      • Sout Man
        August 23, 2011

How selective should governments be in their intervention. When should we and when should we not intervene? To what extent should we respect the internal affairs of other states?Wasn’t the massacre in Darfur, Sudan, enough reason to intervene. Oh, I forgot those people in Darfur are Black and the oil was a trickle.

For decades, the United States trained, armed and financed dictators in Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras. These were regimes that raped, tortured, murdered and kidnapped civilians. Millions died in Central and South America. So, when do we or when do we not intervene?

      • 1979
        August 23, 2011

That is the million dollar question being asked a million times recently on every news broadcast covering these events, as a fellow human being, when would u want another country to intervene if it were you and your love ones being murdered for political or other reasons??? I think people must read and think for themselves, this illegal war has nothing to do with qadaffi ruling for over 40 years… it has everything to do with control!!!!

The West want more control over Oil resources period, if they were so concerned about human rights why didn’t NATO intervene in the genocide that took place in ruwanda? Look what is heppening in Syria, why aren’t they intervening? they were so quick to over throw qadaffi!!

Now those that linking that to Sklerrit, please be informed that Skerrit stand firm, and if the opposition here think NATO will just appoint them to rule Dca like what is about to happen in lybia, tell them “WE THE PEOPLE WILL BURN DOMINICA FIRST’!!!!!!

Well said homeboy. These are the fools that have Dominica the way it is now when they in their ignorance and arrogance continue to support leaders who have no interests in the well being of the masses but rather in their deep pockets. While you may be right about Ruwanda, Did you Brian L denounce the blatant massacre of civilians by the Lybian leader? Have you been looking at the persons who were EMINENTLY at odds with the Lybian leadership? They were Libyans themselves and mainly cicvilians too, fighting for their own cause of freedom. NATO was only providing strategic support.

      August 22, 2011

      @Brian L.
Facts. (a): Lybia produced 1.8 million barrels daily at its peak, and has a reserve of approx. 44 billion barrels, largest in North Africa as of 2008. The only country that want to control its oil is China who supported the regime while it oppressed its people.
(b).This is not an illegal war,(check the UN Resolution that authorized the operation). And, less we forget the oppressed who initiated the movement for the ongoing revolution in North Africa and the Middle east. Certainly, you seem to be quite blind of the facts while you are in denial due to ignorance and support of Skerrit and Gaddafi.

    August 22, 2011

Nice piece of writing but no doubt it echoes the words of the west and is skillfully crafted by one of their brainwashed disciples who’s false interpretation of democracy leads to savage criticisms of whoever does not permit the mighty U.S. to pillage, plunder and rape their people at will.

Their hands are held high and their voices echo seemingly songs of freedom they are congratulating thieves and murderers but ohhh there is a greater danger, far greater even than the villain Ghadaffi and that is complete ignorance, not knowing who’s going to lead Libya through it’s so-called democracy. The rebels have proved that they cannot be trusted and there are allegations that Al-Qaeda have positioned themselves neatly within rebel ranks. So is it that Nato and the west have brought international terrorism even closer to Europe? Does this mean that there is now an imminent threat and another 9/11 like event pending? Europe beware. Gary there is much greater fear in what lies ahead.

This war on libya like the war in Iraq was based on a lie and instigated by western influences and by no means echoes the true sentiments of a Libya wanting to be free. The mighty Obama who was supposedly a force for change and a breath of peace has proven to be no more than an instrument of war and modern oppression, an agent of colonization and a representative of those forces intent on robbing the true “free world” of all national dignity and resources. They will now control north Africa’s oil resources at will, energy prices will be inflated and the only ones who will suffer are struggling third world nations, Dominica included. Third world nations who were benefactors of Libya’s generosity will once again bear a tremendous economic burden (possibly a catalyst for further unrest, invasions and re-colonization by western powers).

Libya’s war must concern us all, are we no concentrating too much power in the hands of one nation/president or small grouping of nations? Who’s to save us if he/they decide to invade like he/they did in libya? It’s clear and the west does not listen to international voices nor open avenues for dialogue to solve conflict, once he/they decide to use military might and violate the sovereignty of a nation, consider it done.

So don’t rejoice just yet Gary, “cause if u think it done yet, there is so much more to come”.

    • really??

I will not go into a historical account of the Lybian conflict or Egypian and other middle Eastern situations with this fool because people like him are too cut up in reverberating the garbage spilled out by western media outlets like FOX News, CNN and the like in their defense of imperialism (remember for a very long timepeople like Neslon Mandela and the ANC were considered terrorists by these very people (and I’m sure the author would likewise agree with the depection at the time).

All I can say to these fools is DREAM ON if you believe by writing these crap on the internet and the media, your political parties (blue, green or whatever colour) is getting into power anytime soon in Dominica!!!

My people too much politics. You all are messing up the country. Everything is a politics. That is why the opposition will stay in the wilderness for the next 50 years, they have nothing to offer as an alternative for economic development, just political nonsense that the public is turned off.

    • August 22, 2011

the Opposition DID do alot for this country…and hey did not have to be corrupt or sell out d country to foreigners to do it.

THE OPPOSITION IS ANYONE WHO IS A TRUE PATRIOT OF THIS COUNTRY.

THE OPPOSITION IS ANYONE WHO IS STILL IN LOVE WITH THE SOUL OF THIS COUNTRY

THE OPPOSITION IS ANYONE WHO IS SELFLESS AND PUTS COUNTRY FIRST BEFORE MULTI MILLION DOLLAR HOUSES
THE OPPOSITION IS ANY PATRIOT WHO OPPOSES THE SPYING ON ORDINARY CITIZEN BY THE GOVERNMENT, WHO OPPOSES CRIMINALITY IN PUBLIC OFFICE, AND WHO OPPOSES THE INVASION OF THIS LAND OF OUR ANCESTORS BY CHINESE HORDS

        August 22, 2011

        And may I add:

THE OPPOSITION IS ANYONE WITH A BRAIN THE SIZE OF A PEA, INCAPABLE OF REASON, FULL OF HOT AIR AND FURRY, WITH NO DIRECTION OR PLAN, BELIEVES THAT IT IS “MY WAY OR THE HIGH WAY” AND WILL IMPOSE THEIR VERSION OF “DEMOCRACY OR FREEDOM” WHETHER WE THE PEOPLE AGREE WITH THEM OR NOT.

THE OPPOSITION IS ANYONE WHO REFUSES TO ACCEPT THE RESULT OF AN DEMOCRATICALLY HELD ELECTION JUST BECAUSE THEY LOST!

THE OPPOSITION IS ANYONE WHO OPPOSES PEACE, HARMONY AND UNITY (A LA CALLS FOR REVOLT AND BOOTS ON THE GROUND) CONTRARY TO THE RULE OF LAW!

sigh, sad people……. Reader, Wait A Minute… sadddd…… you are one person…. when u talk about “we” particularly when it concerns voting u are talking about every person of voting age in Dominica. there must be opposition, don’t you sometimes stop to question yourself whether you should or should not do something??? even in your own head there is opposition, times when you question yourself….. this is absolutely healthy and actually indicative of a functional mind… you are the one who seems incapable of reason. you nor I can stop people from having their objections…so just accept it. there is no logical sense in trying to stop something that is as natural as nature….what we can do is talk to each other. GENUINELY listen to what other people are objected to or concerned about and give your perspective, remember that the goal is to bring the person over to your side. not to discard their concern… they have a right to be concerned and for their concerns to be heard…we need to be a little more tolerant of each other i think. we would make more progress that way.

This is not about Libya or it’s people! This is strictly about oil! This gives Europe, Russia, China & the USA a chance at a major oil source outside of Middle East.

    • Cerberus
      August 22, 2011

      – World can live without Libyan oil. Saudi Arabia pumped an extra 3 million barrels a day while Libya was off stream and now will cut that back in order to maintain OPEC prices. Nobody panicked. (…don’t worry uncle Cavez!).
      – Crude price dropped by less than 2% on the market today supporting what I just said.

      • Homeboy
        August 22, 2011

WAKE UP YOU RIGHT THATS TRUE.

    • L'Esprit Poule
      August 22, 2011

@”Wake Up”: the Libyan people rose up against a forty year dictatorship to reclaim their enfranchisement in the political process. They were tired of a small clique of crooks who were plundering the country’s wealth and lining their own pockets and those of their offshore political sympathizers. So it is very cynical of you to say that “this is not about Libya or it people”. It is about Libya and its people! The Libyans are the ones giving their lives in search of the political freedoms that we are taking for granted. They are the ones makng the necessary sacrifices as they march on Tripoli to reclaim their destiny.

It may be true that China, Russia, and the West have alterior motives with regards to their respective positions on the Libya situation, but that should not de-legitimize the Libya people’s struggle to free themselves from tyranny. They deserve to be free, to chose their own government, to participate fully in the political process, wthout fear of persecution. What our fellow Libyan brothers and sisters are seeking is freedom from despotic nepotism and injustice. Those are admirable aspirations that we should not seek to deny the Libyans.

So while for some outsiders it may be “strictly about oil”, for the majority of Libyans who are shedding their blood, sacrificing their lives, and yearning for the sweet taste of freedom, it is strictly about Libya! Long live the brave people of Libya! May you soon be liberated to pursue your true Destiny!!

Or rather that is the information that the media is putting out. NATO forces represent the UN (world govt.) Gadafi may cut a deal or not. We are often not given the true details by the controlled information media. If you aren’t there, you don’t know what is really happening and even if you are there, you may not know what really is going on.

Chris Volney because Skerrit publicly and unequivocally expressed his support for Gaddafi and even mentioned their personal relationship, he even pledged to assist Ghaddafi.. “How can you link Skerrit with Kaddafi”- If Skerrit or Denzel Douglas is prepared to provide support to a ruthless dictator it simply mean that Skerrit or Denzel support or condone the dictatorial ideologies of Kaddafi. If we take the stance and declare that Skerrit or Denzel were in it for the money however despicable then that is another issue. As for to the true nature of Qadaffi and the 40 years of his iron fisted rule that is left for the history books. However I can’t go against reasoning – why these people fought for months , some gave up their lives only to see Kadaffi and his family face the arms of justice?
To secretly like Qadaffi because of the many personal gifts that he give in return for loyalty is one thing but come out a make a public statement supporting and offering support to Kadaffi is Assinine to say the least. After all not even countries like Rusia or china who have invested interest in Kadaffi operations came out publically – Dominica did or should I say Skerrit did.

Let us welcome Qaddafi with open hands to Dominica – after all Qadaffi own billions of dollars and just one billion would transform D/ca build more Villas, more stone houses in the north east village near Porssie, more passport sales. In fact Qadaffi can live in the various houses that he financed at different locations on the island ( I was just Borne and VVILLARED in Dominica papa). Oh what about those brief case of cash that went MIA on a trip from Libya.
I wont be surprised if Qadaffi own a D/ca passport so all Qadaffi has to do is bring back his hair transplant surgeon and plastic surgeons transform his image again and fligh to Dominica- Bravo Qadaffi. I’m sure Tony would welcome Qadaffi on the next level program.
