COMMENTARY: What can Beijing 2022 bring us?

Chinese Ambassador Lin Xianjiang

The XXIV Olympic Winter Games is about to open. As the first “Dual Olympic City” in history, Beijing is ready to present
a simple, safe and splendid Winter Olympics to the world.

In the summer 14 years ago, the Beijing Olympic Games amazed the whole world with an unforgettable memory for
many people. Dominican athletes Chris Lloyd and Erison Hurtault took part in track and field events. Then President
Nicholas Liverpool and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit visited Beijing to watch the games and attended the closing ceremony, highly applauding the success of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Today, we still have the confidence to bring new surprises to the world. In 19 competition days, 2,892 athletes from all
over the world will compete in 7 major events, 15 sub-events and 109 minor events including skiing, skating, ice hockey,
curling, snowmobiles, sledding and biathlon. While international audience cannot come to Beijing to watch the Winter Olympics first hand for COVID-19 prevention and control reasons, the application of the latest technologies, including 4K and 8K ultra-high definition live broadcast, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, 5G and so on, will provide more audience around the world with a better online watching experience. For all participants, China has also taken meticulous
and effective measures to prevent infections, so as to ensure their safe participation and the orderly conduct of the whole
competition.

I learned that people in Dominica love sports, especially cricket, football and athletics events. As “Nature Island of the
Caribbean” is located in the tropics, many people don’t know much about ice and snow sports, nor the Winter Olympics. However, be it Summer Olympics or the Winter Olympics, it is not only the arena for top athletes to compete, but also the source of Olympic spirit for mankind. At present, the COVID-19 pandemic has not subsided, and the international landscape remains complicated and changeable. The official motto for Beijing 2022 is “Together for a Shared Future”, which encourages all mankind to face difficulties and look forward to tomorrow together. It advocates the common goal of pursuing unity, peace, progress and inclusiveness. It promotes the Olympic spirit of being faster, higher, stronger and more united. It expresses the common desire of the world to join hands for a better future. Its significance and value will be shared by all mankind.

For some time, a few countries politicized sports, trying to obstruct the successful holding of Beijing Olympic Games by
means of so-called “diplomatic boycott” to achieve their own political goals. However, what the whole world expects is unity, cooperation and the success of the Winter Olympics, leaving their attempt particularly vulnerable. On December 2, the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution on Olympic Truce for the Beijing Winter Games, which is drafted by China and the IOC and co-sponsored by 173 countries. So far, 32 international dignitaries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Argentine President Alberto Fernández, Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, IOC President Thomas Bach and UN Secretary-General António Guterres will attend the opening ceremony and join us in the grand event.

In organizing Beijing 2022, China follows a green, inclusive, open and clean approach, which contains the values
that China has always advocated. Green is the core idea of Beijing Winter Olympics, which is the practice of the Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization and the notion that clean rivers and lush mountains are invaluable assets in the preparation of the Winter Olympics.

For the first time in history, Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will use 100% green electricity generated by
wind and solar energy to power competition venues. Also for the first time, the Beijing Winter Olympics will use carbon dioxide refrigerant with near zero carbon emissions. In addition, 85% of the vehicles used in Winter Olympics adopted energy saving and clean energy technologies. These measures will make Beijing Winter Olympics the first Olympic Games in history to truly achieve the goal of “carbon neutrality”.

Inclusiveness will create an excellent opportunity to achieve a win-win situation between winter sports and regional development. Since the preparation of the Winter Olympics started, 346 million residents across the country have participated in winter sports. At the same time, the promotion of winter sports has also stimulated the development potential of local winter sports industry. For example, Chongli District of Zhangjiakou, an important competition area in the Winter Olympic Games, was once a poor county. With the preparation of the Winter Olympics, its winter sports tourism resources have been fully developed, and its infrastructure and surrounding industries have also been developed. Now the county has shaken off poverty. By sharing the Olympic Games, more people can benefit from the success of the Winter Olympics.

Openness promotes further exchanges and cooperation between the East and the West. It is the concrete embodiment of
the vision to build a community with a shared future for mankind put forward by President Xi Jinping. Beijing Winter
Olympics actively consulted experienced international organizations and expert teams in terms of venue construction,
ice and snow making, competition organization, training and competition, etc., and drew from international advanced
experience. At the same time, Beijing Winter Olympics will vigorously promote winter sports on a global scale with its
influence, and share the successful experience with the world.

Cleanness avoids extravagance and waste, and maximizes resource utilization. The construction of venues for the Beijing
Winter Olympic Games will be carried out on the original basis of the 2008 Olympic Games. For example, the “Water Cube” (National Aquatics center) that once shocked the world will be transformed into “Ice Cube”; Big Air Shougang, which hosts the Snowboarding platform event, is transformed from an abandoned factory; Wukesong Sports Center can be converted from basketball court to skating rink within 6 hours. In addition, the Organizing Committee also supervises the possible integrity risks according to law and regulations to ensure the effective use of funds.

Now, the world is looking forward to Beijing, and an unforgettable event is about to begin. We can foresee that after
the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games will once again write a brilliant page in the
history of human sports. The value and experience it brings will also become the permanent wealth of mankind. I’d like to invite all of you to pay attention to the Beijing Winter Olympics with us (for more information please check out the official website https://www.beijing2022.cn/en/ ). I believe that the people of Dominica will see a different China in the Winter Olympics, and our understanding and friendship will be further enhanced.

Since Dominica signed Diplomatic Relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) or China in 2004 or thereabout, Dominica has benefited tremendously in the areas of infrastructural development, agricultural development, public housing, education, especially higher education, public healthcare, public safety and many other areas of development cooperation. Because of our excellent Diplomatic and Bilateral relations Dominica will continue to benefit Chinese development assistance into the foreseeable future.

Two areas of potential benefit to Dominica are in the areas of exports of value added agriculture and sustainable tourism, since China is a major importer of value added agricultural products and the world’s largest outbound tourism market. No other country generates more outbound tourists than China does and interestingly Chinese tourists spends more money than any other tourists.

Continued embrace of the one China policy and increased cooperation must be encouraged.

Now that is an informed opinion, some may not like it, but that’s fine, disagreements should be mature and not solely partisan political beliefs with silly narratives. China is a very complex Country Politically, and that extends to the geopolitical arena. To deny that Dominica has not benefited in a relationship with China is somewhat irrational.

All we ask is for OUR government to be transparent and simply tell us WHAT is in the agreements, any MOU they sign. Is that too much to ask for?
We do not want to wake up one morning and find a group of Chinese people drilling or bulldozing on land we own, for a reasons we do not know. This has caused so much unneccessary division and hate between locals and Chinese who have to explain why they are there or fight their way out, in some African countries that their leaders didn’t think they should tell anyone. Why is that?

I think you have a point there. They rescued us from the Milat Wozo that $queezed us with their inflated prices just to send their kids school overseas, and left us with a series of derelict buildings along our roadsides that they are all selling to the Chinese. TELL US, WHAT’S IN ANY MOU?

They can bring more control over yours truly in 2022 and further their ambitions to make Dominica a colony. Yours truly is awaiting his Chinese flag to raise over his residence along with a huge monetary ” contribution” to his bank account as a sign of their full support to yours truly the minister of finance AKA PM.

The fact that the Chinese Ambassador overly promotes his chosen aspects of China, speaks volumes about the questionable aspects of his country on which he remains silent.

Once again, this Chinese ambassador paints a flattering image of China. In reality, life in China for many, especially minorities and religious groups are rather unbelievably unflattering.

The most innocent criticism of the ruling administration can land you in prison for years. Critics of the government disappear without a trace. China is probably the most racist place on earth. Executions by firing squads are swift without fair trials. The long list of human rights abuses and atrocities can go on ad nauseam.

The racial slurs that greeted black Olympians by citizens of China as they alighted the planes for this year’s Winter Olympics were dispicable. Instead of roundly condemning the actions of his devout racist fellow citizens, here comes the ambassador, trying to paint China as an unblemished, perfect jurisdiction.

Sensible , native Dominicans cannot be fooled by your crooked rhetoric. China should be designated, by the UN, as the world’s most RACIST, WICKED country.

@Ibo France – It is always comical when the Chinese propaganda apparatus associates China with the word ‘Openness’ when attempting to present China in a good light.

Somebody should ask the Chinese what will they allow Dominica to bring to China in terms of economic trade exports from Dominica to China at reasonable fair market prices.

DNO yet again sees fit to print cheap propaganda traded by this so called Ambassador. He states and I quote: ‘Today, we still have the confidence to bring new surprises to the world’. What is he referring to? Giving Covid to the world? Stepping up aggression towards Taiwan? Or perhaps continued and blatant trampling on human rights. With friends like that, Dominica doesn’t need enemies…

Great points, Beta. Are we blinded by money and favours? There are forced labour camps, no one knows the real whereabouts of the young, female, Chinese tennis player? China is creating artificial islands in international waters and threatens ships that venture c!ose by .

China is a pariah nation. There is no mutual relationship between China and Dominica. A lion would not have a mutual relationship with a fawn. Dominica is used as a large landfill for China’s cheap, inferior goods. Just count the growing number of Chinese businesses presently in Dominica. Dominica is a big warehouse for Chinese products.

“The love of money is the Root of all evil.” Skerrit and China have Dominica and the local business people including the media on a puppet string. It will take just a few courageous men and women to liberate our country. Those who desire to make money their God and deprive our children of a safe and free Dominica should not rest too easy; or be too comfortable. Dominica is our country and we will take it back. Ibo France is passionate about his country and there’s nothing wrong with that. Why is DNO threatening not to publish his contribution? The labor government and its sheep followers do not like bright and sensible people. That’s why they hate the Honorable Lennox Linton. Skerrit himself is scared of this man’s intellect. Linton has a clear and sensible vision for Dominica; while Skerrit keeps cropping in the dark and has wealth on a meager salary. The tragedy is, Dominicans are ok with that so long they eat from a stolen pie.

ADMIN: There is no threat but there is a promise as stated in our comment policy: “we will delete comments that (are)defamatory or harassing…” You can read the full comment policy here: https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/policies/#comment-policy.

Here ,also, is a link to the libel laws of our country: https://www.dominica.gov.dm/laws/chapters/chap7-04.pdf

The law and these standards apply to everyone and do not get suspended simply because you feel right or justified.

You can ask a question but can’t make unsubstantiated statements as if it were fact, especially pertaining to a question that has been answered repeatedly. At which point continuing to make such a statement is not only harassment, it is defamatory and potentially libelous.

Apart from defamation and other provisions made by law, the only way free speech works is to allow everyone (in this case the Chinese Ambassador) to have their say and you can address it with your own free speech.

This post is truly “free” speech in the sense that we have not been paid for this or any of the commentaries submitted – which anyone can submit. We do not regularly do business with the Chinese Embassy so even that line of argumentation insinuating our motivation is just false.
