COMMENTARY: What Dominica needs most in a leader today

lennoxThe Right  CV= Character and Vision !                                                                                    Lennox Linton is a man of Great Character and Vision. It is not by chance that “C” is for “Character” and “V’ is for “Vision.”   “In a President, character is everything. A President doesn’t have to be brilliant… He doesn’t have to be clever; you can hire clever… You can hire pragmatic, and you can buy and bring in policy wonks. But you can’t buy courage and decency, you can’t rent a strong moral sense. A President must bring those things with him... He needs to have, in that much maligned word, but a good one nonetheless, a “vision” of the future he wishes to create.. But a vision is worth little if a President doesn’t have the character– the courage and heart– to see it through.” These are the words of  Margaret Ellen “Peggy” Noonan, writing about the Qualifications for  President of the Great United States, the largest Economy and most powerful Country in the world. The many of us who know Lennox Linton, and have followed his dedicated work over more than a decade, towards rebuilding good governance in Dominica, would swear that UWP asked  Noonan to write this today in confirmation of  Lennox Linton’s qualifications for leadership and Prime Minister of Dominica. But Noonan wrote this on her own. It just so happens, that this jacket is cut to fit Lennox Linton.  Dominica could not ask for better.

So when it comes to CV for Prime Minister, let me draw Dominicans’ attention to one who is an authority on CVs for President. Peggy Noonan. :Noonan is an American author of eight books on politics, religion, and culture, including a biography of Pope John Paul II, entitled John Paul the Great, and a biography of Ronald Regan, entitled When Character was King. Five of Noonan’s books have been New York Times bestsellers. She is also a weekly columnist for The Wall Street Journal.  Definitely CV matters when it comes to jobs, including Prime Ministers. Its just that Mr. Aaron’s Labour Government completely and conveniently omitted  the most important qualifications, Character and Vision (CV) from the CV for Prime Ministers Job. Leave out Character and Vision from any Prime Ministers CV, and you have an empty CV and a Puppet Prime Minister.

“I Have Dream…” Hailed as the Greatest Speech for Black Freedom

I was still in high school, fifty years ago when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led the March on Washington, one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history. His vision of a world committed to equal opportunity and equal justice under law, expressed in his famous ,”I have a Dream Speech”, lives on and inspires the world to this day. “Noonan’s writings on the important need for Character and Vision in a leader, are in the similar vein to that of  our  Great Black Leader Martin Luther King, who speaking on Education, had this to say: “The function of Education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. But education which stops short with efficiency may prove to be the most dangerous menace of society. The most dangerous criminal may be the person gifted with reason, but no morals. Accordingly we need for the well being of Society, men  and women with intelligence plus character”

Dominicans and non Dominicans alike know that the worst problem plaguing Dominica today, is  the  repeated shady dealings of the present Labour Government. In creole you would refer to such leaders as   “les mone mauvay karacter, yooh ka toucher. As a result, Dominica’s name is being scandalized abroad, as every other week, we hear of another scandal involving the top officials of Government. Whilst here at home, the unemployment situation keeps getting worst, the poor are sinking deeper into poverty, whilst Ministers get richer by the day. .What Dominica needs most today is a Government of integrity, lead by a leader of exemplary character, with a  clear vision of the Dominica he or she wants to see build for us and our children.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

In Lennox Linton’s own words in one of his recent radio programs we get an insight into the Character of the man:  “All I wish to say at this time is that I have a genuine desire to serve others through whatever assistance, guidance, counselling or leadership I may be able to provide on important development matters in their lives. I always try my best to lead and to manage with purpose, meaning and values.
My interest personally and professionally is in building enduring relationships that succeed through sincerity and continuous improvement. Wherever I am called on to play a leadership role it will be about empowering people to make a difference through excellent teamwork.

I am as guided by my heart, my passion, and compassion, as I am by the dictates of my mind.   I have learned to rely a lot on the blessing of natural abilities, but I also recognize my shortcomings and I work very hard to overcome them.

I am dedicated to continuously developing myself through the discipline of life-long learning because I know, understand and appreciate that being a responsible citizen of global civilization, being a good leader is all about a lifetime of personal growth.

I applaud the doctors, the PHDs, the lawyers, the engineers, the economists, the accountants, the rocket scientists, the astro physicists, the MBAs, the environmentalists, the journalists, the social scientists, the political scientists, the psychologists… I applaud all the university graduates in various fields of professional engagement and I encourage our students to follow in their footsteps to ensure the highest level of education possible in preparation for outstanding success in their lives and times. At the same time, I applaud all those who excel and make a difference without the benefit of university degrees and I encourage those who for one reason or the other were not able to complete a university degree to learn from the examples of Microsoft founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen and Apple mastermind Steve Jobs, that while extremely useful, a university degree is not a prerequisite for leadership success that dramatically changes the lives of ordinary people.

I do not have a university degree and I have never represented myself as a university graduate. I was trained as a broadcast journalist in a special professional development program at the University of Texas at Austin under the mentorship of the Dean of the Jesse Jones Communications Centre. Under the global education and training umbrella of a US Fortune 500 company, I was trained as a frontline facilitator of number of its people development programs in strategic planning, goal alignment, leadership, performance management, customer service and logistics. Apart from that, I have been dared by common sense to keep teaching myself and refreshing my knowledge and understanding of matters pertinent to relevant professional engagements.

So, over the years, while others were privileged to pursue their PHDs, I was trying to learn how to develop and communicate long term direction for the organization that links the overall organizational goals with the goals of its different teams… I was thinking mission, strategies, strengths, weaknesses…tactical planning to enhance competitiveness and how to balance big picture concerns with day-to-day activities… I was thinking about leveraging the value of innovative ideas and solutions to problems… how to stimulate creative ideas from others, how to champion new initiatives within and beyond to scope of the job… how to drive hard on the right issues so that you get results and add value to the organization by moving others into action… by taking decisive action on emerging opportunities.

So, what exactly is Lennox Linton qualified for? Quite simply, I believe I am qualified to make a difference… a difference for the better in the public interest of my Country.. That people choose to follow me, I think its simply because they know where I stand… they know well that when principles are tested, then compromise is never an option for me..”  Now that The UWP has nominated  Lennox Linton as Political Leader, the people of Dominica are one step closer to again having an Honest Dominican of impeccable Character as their choice for Prime Minister of  our beloved  Dominica. Under Lennox’s leadership,  Dominican’s and the world, can expect to see our beloved Country return to a government of honesty, integrity,  fair play and prosperity for all. Lennox is already making  Dominicans proud. Lennox is already making  the people of Marigot proud. I am proud to support Lennox Linton for Leader of United Workers Party, and Prime Minister of Dominica.

Just a little note…Leadership is situational, what makes one a good leader as a journalist doesnt necessarily make that person a good leader in any other situation, moreso that of party leader and Prime Minister. So experience as leader in various situations do count. Also just remember it is one thing to ariticulate a vision, it is quite another thing to lead others to achieving that vision (most things are easier said than done) As for saying no compromise on principles…well the current referenced case is The President of the US saying some time ago if Syria uses chemical weapons against the “rebels”that will be His trigger to get directly involved… but now we are noting that even though he claims to have the evidence for use of chemical weapons, when other things are considered he has gone to congress for approval to act….sometimes we must make compromises to even our dearly held principles in the interest of a seemingly bigger good. Be careful how we measure character.

    SACRILEGE IN LEADERSHIP

    Dear Dominica

Please find attached The sermon of Reverend Peter R Augustine

This is a simple message from one of God’s anointed.

For preaching the word of god the designated leader of the UWP
has threatened blasphemously to interfere with the lords anointed.

Is this the man that Eddison James has anointed to be the chosen one. Imagine that? sacrilege

Email [email protected] for your audio copy of the sermon delivered by Reverend Peter R Augustine on May day 2012.

I have listen to the Character called Lennox Linton for years. The manner he portrayed himself I was convinced that he had qualified himself with some degree of higher learning.

To my surprise that never materialize, then I taught that he had proven himself competent in some professional skill but that was a fraud. He as been highlighted as an investigative journalist , in a court of law under oath in silence he admitted that he had no qualification in investigative journalism but his fans mainly made up of UWP supporters and his cohorts in the media pitch forked him to the rank of Renowned Investigative Journalist.

Today he is crowned as the ultimate leader of the UWP. The difficulty for his fans and supporters who are strictly within the UWP is to convince the majority of voting Dominicans that he is qualified and competent to take on the mantle of leadership of the country based on his record.

They have to present and defend his record beginning with his expulsion from 4th Form in the Dominica Grammar School for violence in school.

They must present his cv to the nation or it will be presented on their behalf.

Should they fail to do so creditably within the next 24 hours I Barrack Obama will present hi cv to the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

God bless the Commonwealth of Dominica

It is amazing how Dominica has changed in terms of who is educated or not when it comes to politics. I wonder what is Sir Brian’s take on all this criticisms of Mr. Linton. Sir Brian’s father was a distinguish lawyer and Queen’s Counsel of impeccable reputation in Dominica and the Caribbean. He wanted to assist Dominica, therefore he entered the political race in the Goodwill Constituency, to the surprise of Dominicans and the rest of the Caribbean, he lost his deposit. In politics, does education matter or it is a change of the times.

I scrolled through the comments and it seems that a lot of those who choose to post are singing the song of Mr. Prevost and the UWP: that Lennox is the man, the great deliverer! Yet, not one person, including the author of the commentary, has pointed to one shred of evidence to substantiate that claim. What are Lennox’s achievements? I recently interviewed applicants for an entry level management position in my department and I wanted examples of their management experience. Surely, if we are selecting a leader, don’t we want to know what or who they’ve lead previously and their level of success? Then we talk about degrees. Guess what, the people referenced a la Gates and Jobs were innovators. Some folks may take offense, but I beg that your response be based on evidence and not on emotion. If we really believe we deserve better and this is what we are offered, shouldn’t we be appalled?

So … Going strictly based on what was presented here on DNO, it appears Lennox’s CV = Completely Void.

are you for real? let us be intellectually honest. Lennox’s management experience? What about Manager of Human Resources at Dominica’s leading manufacturing enterprise? What about serving as Director of Logistics with a transnational company?

Let us be honest. What was Skerrit’s management experience when he entered politics and was elected a member of Parliament?

Mr. Prevost, I remember walking on 125th street and reading a banner with the following words uttered by the great boxer M. Ali,” If you don’t Stand up for something you will fall for anything.” After reading your commentary I ask myself why didn’t you or anyone have the foresight to stop the person or persons uttering comments about Pierre Charles not having an education. Well, if you speak to the vision of Lennox, he being in the same situation with Mr. Charles should have said something, but we are a people who say things out of convenience, and it appears that your commentary speaks to that right now. I realize that your party have been caught flat-footed in regards to this subject of Lennox not having a degree, because this issue typifies the situation of most Dominicans given the lack of opportunity to attain an education. This is why I am of the firm view your party should apologize to Mr. Charles family, and all the Dominicans who do not have an education. I recall in the 90’s when your party slate of candidates came out I thought to myself, wow, because emphasis was placed on the education background of the candidates; as a young man then it seem to infer that politicians should have a degree, therefore I find it pathetic when Lennox lack of education is being defended by use of character and vision. Ok, lets debunk the character aspect, we live in a society where many if not all of us disagree at some point, yet the manner in which Lennox speaks seem to be bent on dogma, “the know it all, buck stops here attitude” and while am at it the man has done work that might have open the eyes of many on the goings-on in government, but he needs to tone down on his arrogance and you all as senior party members needs to bring him in line with how a prospective statesman should act. Mr. Prevost in short Lennox needs to rebrand his personality to meet the following standards:
    1) Respect for people despite his opinion of them and stop the name calling; and yes I know the ruling party are calling people names, but should he step down in the gutter as well?
    2) Work towards wining people over no matter their allegiance to his party and not this slash and burn type politics.
    3) Respect for men of the cloth i.e Peter R. Augustine.

Yes, Dominica needs a Leader. Someone who will motivate and energies the people to be the best they can be. Someone who will build a team of ministers that will take their oath seriously and serve the people. Mr. Linton we have just experience the worst economic downturn in the history of the country and therefore we need a change. Thanks for taking the call.

Great Article! However; when it comes to Politics history have show once the election is over many time we really learn about Mr.Character and Vision.
For whatever reason, the Promises are left behind. True Leadership comes from the Soul. It also takes everyone Elected or Appointed that Position to work honestly, collaboratively, giving each one the benefit-of- the- doubt (man cannot be trusted. Only God). financial Greed is usually the downfall of many who take office. Last but not least; not Only men make great Leaders.Women also make great Leaders. It goes both ways. Take a look at History and all the women who made a difference and continue to.

It is timely that such an article is written, at the eve of a memorable occasion when Dominica for the first time in approximately twenty year has an opportunity to select a leader who will not only bring prosperity back to Dominica, but honesty , yes honesty. We all know about the corruption in Government which has engulfed this God protected Country. We are aware of the dishonesty that is rampant in this country by those who claim to lead us. Someone who had not been living in Dominica for approximately twenty years, would certainly been very impressed with the major structural improvements, but at what cost . According to a calypso, we cannot eat concrete. The poverty of the country has been out of control for years, the hospital has been out of medicines quite frequently and Government’s priority has not been to solve those problems. Those of us who can remember the movie, The Ten Commandments, should be comforted with the feeling that one day God will deliver us from this wicked Government, as he did to the Hebrews .God has heard our prayers and has sent us a family man with integrity, honesty, a passionate, a loving man, an understanding man, a gifted man, a no nonsense man, a man who believes that neither man nor women should live by handouts but by establishing an economy where everyone regardless of political affiliations must have an opportunity to be employed. According to a member of the UWP,” money will be meeting money.” We cannot allow this God given talented man to get away from us only to be saying later, had we known, but instead shout out loud and clear thank you God for the deliver.

Dear editor I noticed that you refused to publish my comment. I have edited my comment to ensure that it meets the high vetting procedure employed on comments opposed to the UWP.

I hope I meet that Standard.

It is odd that Norris Prevost is making this very lame attempt to define Lennox Linton. This definition is fork pitched in classic rebuttal language void of original thinking, a very far cry from the visionary language that is required to inspire the nation to cultivate the character of hard work required to aspire and achieve.

The poor performance by Prevost Is not just lack of his ability to clearly articulate a vision for the further development of the country but the absence of substance and value in the product he wants to market to the unassuming population.

It is difficult, very difficult in fact impossible to produce milk from stone. How could Prevost take a high school dropout with no evidence of further studies or creditable results of professional achievement and seek to be his king maker.

Surely Prevost was grasping at straw and he droned himself in the sea of academic and previous experience failures of his designated leader.

Truly it is a backward step and at total insult to the nation.

    Prevost,
Lennox had a political agenda from sometime now, and being the coward that he is, he hid behind many masks such as patriots forum, talk show etc, he is full of bolony and lacks carisma, he is too pumpous for his own good.
