Haiti: a long descent to hell

Geography and bad luck are only partly to blame for Haiti’s tragedy. There are, plainly, more propitious places for a country and its capital city to find themselves than straddling the major fault line between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates.

It’s more than unfortunate to be positioned plumb on the region’s principal hurricane track, meaning you would be hit, in the 2008 season alone, by a quartet of storms as deadly and destructive as Fay, Gustav, Hannah and Ike (between them, they killed 800 people, and devastated more than 70% of Haiti’s agricultural land). Wretched, also, to have fallen victim to calamitous flooding in 2002, 2003 (twice), 2006 and 2007.

But what has really left Haiti in such a state today, what makes the country a constant and heart-rending site of recurring catastrophe, is its history. In Haiti, the last five centuries have combined to produce a people so poor, an infrastructure so nonexistent and a state so hopelessly ineffectual that whatever natural disaster chooses to strike next, its impact on the population will be magnified many, many times over. Every single factor that international experts look for when trying to measure a nation’s vulnerability to natural disasters is, in Haiti, at the very top of the scale. Countries, when it comes to dealing with disaster, do not get worse.

Haiti like any other nation have its fair share of performance of the the sciene of Voodo. Looking back at what our brothers and sisters in haiti overcome they are a resiliant people and praying people and an exploited people. We know how to put our hands on the wheel and as long as we have hands we the decendants of slaves will keep this wheel turning.

@to thoughtful……….you are the righteous one. I guess since you have no sin you are the one casting the first stone.

Stay snug in your righteousness and sinlessness and be the judge.

Balance and Tricia’s posts are absolutely ridiculous.

I spent two weeks in Haiti a few years ago and the Haitian people are as religious as any other people around the world. I remember before going on the trip people were warning me about all kinds of things I would see. The first night I actually stayed up late with my camcorder waiting to see the soucouyants (witches) flying over the mountains behind Port au Prince as i was told would happen. To this day I have seen nothing.

During my stay there, there were five Sunday masses at the Cathedral in Port au Prince and every single one was packed to capacity.

Yes, there is voodoo in Haiti, I actually visited a voodoo temple. To my utter surprise there were numerous statues of Catholic saints in the temple in addition to other kinds of statues and talisman. Sensing my apprehension in entering the voodoo priest told me his followers are small as the majority of Haitians are Christians and there was nothing to fear. The only thing was that I was prohibited to take pictures inside the temple, which was really a small shack in the middle of nowhere.

The whole voodoo thing was given notoriety by the Duvaliers who claim that their dreaded secret police the Toton Macoute was actually dead people brought back to life by voodoo. This was done to drive fear into the Haitian populace and combined with a plethora of local legends this thing has gained mythic status.

From my experience the presence of voodoo is no different from the presence of obeah in Dominica where people go to to that obeahman in … (I think he is a big fake) or the one in …..

We need to know what is going on before we judge the Haitian people.

Balance and Tricia these are idiotic comments to make. When will ppl start to realize that Haiti is no more evil than the good ole USA or any other country. For the umpteenth time Haiti is 80% Catholic just like DA, JA, USA etc.
PPL ,Haiti IS NOT EVIL, Haiti is just more rooted to the African traditions than the rest of the islands, nothing more, it just happen to lie in the paths of most hurricanes and on a crack of the earth’s surface, “geographic bad luck,” nothing more, stop believing the hype. Why are we so blinded to our so called christian beliefs to call a country evil and believing in the devil.

Haiti problems was created by the West France and America. Voodoo is no different from christianity, it is all about sacrifice. Because the people are black and their religion from Africa does not mean they are praying or worshipping the devil. Stop beleiving the white lies.

  11. January 17, 2010

they need to stop their eveilous wayys and het their lives together and help move their country forward….tooo much voodoo,, though its their tradition…
