The porn epidemic letter

CommentaryDear Mr. Politician (who would very soon want my vote):

I’d like to implore you as a political representative and/or leader, to introduce a legislation that protects young people from acts of bullying such as the recent surge in pornographic content that is being published over the Internet (on social networks and media sharing sites), most often without the consent of at least one of those engaged in the sexual acts.

The young people, as long as they are legally privileged to consensual sex, have a right to engage in it without the threat of abuse. The culprits who in some cases, although I have to say I am not sure since I have not seen these videos or pictures, do not have permission by the young ladies whom they are seen with in these videos and in those cases do so with malicious intent, ought to be held accountable for their actions. Such intent can have complicated consequences which can follow the victims throughout their professional and personal lives and could even end in self harm or suicide.

After all, in our conservative Christian society, we would tend to judge and point fingers at these victims, not offer refuge in whatever form or fashion, thus possibly leading those individuals to feel isolated and victimized. I stress that they are victims because they have every right to engage in sex without having to fear that they will be bullied for it by the general public.

Making the individuals who maliciously share such content without permission of their sexual partner whom they knowingly place in a compromising position liable to legal action and or imprisonment, would greatly stem the tide of seemingly weekly video releases, and return some form of dignity to our young men and women who respect each other.

The continued flow of pornographic content on the Internet, where once it gets there, it never leaves, can harm more than just individuals and families and individual future prospects, but also the dignity of Dominica, as a tranquil, respectable society with promising young people.

Again, I ask that you take some steps to address this issue. It is a civil issue and does not generate as much public reaction, except the few who view or are affected by it, the way political issues do in this season, but I’d like to stress the salience of this issue and the need to return to civility.

Please excuse any errors in my message, I wrote it on the move from my mobile phone in a moment of indignation.

I thank you for your consideration.

What has happened in Dominica has also happened in Canada and I expect in the States. I am speaking in general terms. What I say applies to any such behavior wherever it transpires.

There is always a howl goes up whenever somebody is exposed committing a sexual transgression from those who think were within their rights and should be left alone.

There are a number of issues involved here and I will comment upon a few of them.

    (1) God Almighty has given us laws to govern human behavior including sexuality. Nobody has a RIGHT to break those laws and if we do there are consequences either in this life or in the next. God forbids sex outside of marriage. Those who read their Bibles may be familar with Romans 1:21-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9,10, & 18, Galatians 5:19-21.
This kind of behavior is a sin whether it is seen by anybody else or not and whether it is filmed or not.

    (2) You speak about conservative Christians judging and pointing the fingers of blame. You should know that it is not Bible believing Christians who have the problems. We are not the ones writing to BELLA for advice, seeing a shrink, or going into therapy.

    (3) To film – or even watch – anybody engaging in a sex act without their consent is an invasion of privacy. To have such a video posted on the internet is a invasion of privacy. The laws differ from nation to nation. But if these things are not illegal they should be and the laws should be enforced.

    (4) The placing of porn – even privately made porn – on the internet is inviting a very big problem. People in any country may be able to access pornography from abroad. What they may not be able to view is their own citizens performing in the movies. But once this becomes available the overlords of the professional porn industry will pick up on the fact that there is an appetite for that kind of entertainment in the country and they will move in to produce and sell their own brand of porn. All they need to find is an appetite for porn, a lack of restraining laws or weak enforcement, and a shortage of legitimate jobs.

    (5) Few people realize how dangerous this industry is. In many cases it is controlled by ex-cons and protected by guns. It is often involved in human trafficing. Frequently it is connected to organized crime. Its employees are often drug users. It contributes to the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

    (6) The porn industry is highly competitive and companies must continually be developing new types of porn to satisfy the sick appetites of its consumers. This has led to group porn, gay porn, kiddie porn, baby porn (!), and even snuff porn (where somebody commits suicide or is killed), and yes – it is for real!

    (7) If you do not want the industry in your country do not roll out the red carpet! Do not let them think even a mild form of soft porn is tolerated! It is a wise government that puts laws in place, briefs its enforcement people, sees it coming and drives it back!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

they can only complain to the law if someone is making money on the sale of the video then it becomes theft, licensing etc. until then its freedom of information its the same as liking or sharing a pic on Facebook you didn’t take the pic, the person didn’t explicitly allow you to share it but everybody can see it… well porn is the same thing.

If you are old enough to engage in consensual sex and have it video taped, then you are old enough to face the consequences of your action. The only persons who need to be protected are those who are under the age of 16.

    • October 11, 2013

What you have said is totally irresponsible :!:

If you knew the harm done to the mind and society by viewing pornography you would realize it is not safe for people of any age.

No porn is a harmless plaything. Even homemade porn is the thin edge of the knife that opens the door to disaster. It is the top of a slippery slope. It damages the actors. It degrades the viewers. It disgraces the home. But it gets worse. When the word gets out that this kind of entertainment has become popular in a country and the people have a growing appetite for it the big companies that produce and sell porn begin to move it. Don’t think for one moment that they are not monitoring the beautiful nature island!

Pornography feeds loneliness. No man who has a good wife and is in a loving committed marriage relationship with a woman he respects is going to have any desire for porn. Most of the men who feed on this type of thing are men who have a problem forming a wholesome relationship with a decent woman. Some married men begin dabbling with porn and develop a hidden addiction their wives are not aware of. But it soon gets in the way of the intimate relationship that is the heart and core of a true marriage.

If you knew how dangerous the “big porn” industry is you would not want anything circulating in your country OR posted on the internet that would send a message to the professional porn producers that there they would be welcome. I encourage you to read my previous comments on this page to learn more about the the porn industry.

Porn never caused a man to be a more loving husband or a kinder father, a more loyal citizen,
or a more productive employee. It drives men to commit fornication and adultery, fuels the prostitution trade, and is responsible for crimes of serial rape and murder.

Again and again men have said they were corrupted and demoralized  as a child by being shown 8-O pornography. However, the effect of porn upon the adult mind may be even worse  because an adult has the opportunity to act out the illicit desires created by the porn. It is adults who commit the crimes. :(

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill Pentecostal Evangelist.

“…I have not seen these videos or pictures…” So, how do you know that they in fact exist? You are on a crusade against an ‘evil’ you do not know exists? Which part of the transaction offends you? The sex? The recording of the sex? the transmission of the recording? How do you know whether the persons in these videos/pictures did not consent to the sex, the recording and the transmission? Which stage offends you? What if the participants consented to all three? Still want it to be a crime? We need to stop being do dramatic and examine things before we jump up and leggo we mouths.

Even so, after the law is passed it has to be enforced. Hopefully law enforcement will play its part ONCE the law is passed. ‘ONCE’because there is no reason it shouldn’t be passed.

Dominica people watch too much TV. You people are young and have knowledge but no wisdom. Use the internet to benifit you. Hurting someone else is not going to make you a big man/woman. I have heard of those videos but I WILL NOT stoop to their level and watch it. Young ladies if you are going to engage in sexual activites and the young man is taping it make sure he’s face is in there too. I will not pass judgement on the people getting “caught” on tape but I will say this “be careful who you date or have sexual contact with. The punks in the video are probably the ones putting it out there.

This is so HYPOCRITICAL! What are you saying?……, “they have every right to engage in sex”. Are you implying that SEX before marriage is the norm in a Christian society?

Are you implying to that by discontinuing the flow of pornographic content on the internet will promote an honourable society? What about reminding the young men and woman in our “conservative Christian society” that in order to safeguard their dignity they have to first acknowledge that their bodies are the TEMPLE of the HOLY SPIRIT.

Your concern should not be directed to politicians, but to the actors in the pornographic performances. They are the ones making a victim of the innocent; the young men and women that are not after the flesh, but seeking GOD’s face.

HONOUR GOD and you will see change.

      Dragon: I agree with you.

The core of the problem is sin.

Fornication is a sin whether it is filmed or not.

It is a sin whether the film is put on the internet or not.

It is a sin whether anybody watches it or not.

Instead of moaning and groaning because somebody took a picture of them and posted it on the internet let them stop fornicating! If they do not want to be stepped on let them get up!

It seems nobody is even teaching the kids the basics of morality anymore; not the parents at home, the pastors at church, or the teachers or counselors at school.

What a price society is paying: We have young girls dropping out of school to raise their babies; single mums struggling to support children; boys and girls growing up in fatherless homes; young people doing drugs and getting in trouble with the law because they lacked good role models at home.

These things are happening because they were not taught what God says about love, marriage, sex, and family OR they could not be motivated to obey God and follow the Christian faith.

No, the sky is not falling down because somebody put a video on the internet. It is because people disrespect their bodies and each other. It is because they sin!

Instead of spewing out contempt against conservative right wing Christians they need to realize that it is the not the Christians who have the problems. Our churches and ministries around the world are on the frontlines reaching out to help those who are trapped in prisons of their own making.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

some PEOPLE want to contest elections and give the impression that they are moralist but I always make my eyes boil my peas.

people who want to contest or are contesting or contested must be exposed for the whole Dominica to know that they have no moral backbone and are wolves in sheep clothing.

For the things that they have done to school children and their own cousins and even goats it is not funny….It is a blasted shame and I pray that they asked Pupa God for forgiveness before they can move on with their lives.

As a woman I am hurting for the things that I have known that so many Kalinago and African women are going through and the acts perpetrated against them by those very persons who are being trusted by the community and even family members. Why is it that such freaks and perverted men continue to use their positions to exploit economically deprived women?

Don’t you know how difficult it is for me to sleep at nights? I have been a victim and am still going through counseling through a Clinical Psychologist . I even pondered suicide. Am certainly not the only one he has molested but am speaking on the behalf of so many of us who are too scared to speak out on the matter.

I TRUST that DNO publishes this comment. It may help save lives and reputations of young persons. Please be careful be weary of smooth talkers and those who are bent on taking advantage of economically deprived and other vulnerable young persons; unfortunately this is very predominant during the ELECTION SEASON where candidates go on a field day with young girls, under the name of campaigning etc.

Is there such a thing as commitment to one’s partner in this my beloved country? Why don’t lecturers respect DSC students and other youths of school-going age in Dominica?

LET US ALL SPEAK OUT AND LET US WOMEN SHOW RESPECT FOR OURSELVES AND SAY NO TO SUCH SEXUAL PREDATORS WHO PRETEND TO BE GENTLEMEN.

I fully endorse and agree with this letter … Some people should stop being small minded we live in a world where people in relationships choose to spice up their sex lives by introducing toys, food, s&m, domineering and even video cameras into the bedroom. This is no news it’s been about for a very long time but as usual some people are just small minded. Unless both parties have mutually agreed to their “sex video” being made public then obviously there is a victim. It may not be your personal preference to film yourself naked or having sex with a partner but it’s someone else’s.

proposed things are impossible unless you think you can control internet and create new laws for this island. Dominica doesn’t have adequate provision in the law which regulates handling of digital data. Moreover if I am correct your judges still do not accept digital data as an evidence…it means that nobody can’t be liable and whatever you wish remain just wishful thinking.Porn distribution is not concern of this island…you are not Dominican Republic after all…so instead of wasting time of some empty issue look around you and think how to force politicians deal with more important issues: absence of quick ambulance services, underdeveloped PMH, careless drivers, absence of any parking regulations in Roseau, waste on the streets, your attitudes towards foreigners etc..those are serious issues not a cry of some brainless person with the problem which has ZERO importance for the society..

I applaud the person who wrote this letter. It shows that there is still civility in our youth today. Everyone have the right to do what they want in their private life, even if they wish to film it. It gets out of hand when their trusted partners think is humorous to share these videos over the social media as a form of entertainment or when some people think its funny to share a bad video of someone just because they don’t like you or as a form of revenge. Personally I delete these videos when received from my contacts and have NO interest in forwarding it to anyone. Some of us are also to blame when we broadcast these videos to our contacts as a form of communication. I feel sorry for these women and men and hope that we all learn from this level of ignorance that some people choose to practice.

People who claim to have not seen victims in the videos, are HYPOCRITES!!!..Thus it is not only the ones who have decided to le tthe video/pictures go viral, the folks who are constantly sharing it with friends, familys, groups, social medias, are also at fault. If one decides to delete it once received,I am certain a lot of this would drastically stop. It has even gone way to far,a facebook page of this madness? This shouldn’t be taking place on our Island. It could happen to anyone, so whether or not women/men decides to partake in this activites with their significant other or whatever the relationship may be. That shouldn’t give either party the right to post. Trying to destroy one’s life doesn’t help the source of this. Everyone has a mother, brother, sisters, father, etc. Remember! The government takes this lightly. One will be fined for drugs, while this is going on w/o any action. Blame it on the country not having the technology to find out who is behind this.LOL.

To the writer of this letter, first of all, please take the time to educate yourself about what laws actually exist before assuming privately and publicly that there are none! The police have been calling on the public and the “victims” to report these acts involving the distribution of porn for some time now. Why do you suppose that is?…because the laws exist and the police would like to prosecute the perpetrators but cannot do so without evidence and testimony! I believe assistance would be required from the “victims” in tracing the origin of these pics and videos and retracing their steps to determine who could have gotten access to them and how.

Secondly, I don’t see any victims when these videos are leaked, unless of course, they`re victims of stupidity! If you share a sexual experience with your partner why the need to document it? What ever happened to committing these things to memory? Furthermore, if you do decide to document it why on a cell phone? Or computer in a file that`s not protected? These things should be stored away for safe keeping where it`s not easily accessible!

Lastly, I implore the young ladies to wise up! In 9 out of 10 of these videos only the young ladies faces are shown! When these things are made public there`s no way of proving which guy is involved unless we inspect their genitals after they`re accused by the young lady…highly unlikely and possibly unlawful! However, there`s no denying who the ladies involved are since their faces are plain as day! What is wrong with these young ladies? Is having your reputation spoilt and being insulted, chastised and ridiculed the order of the day? Learn to say NO!!

An intervention from politicians is not the answer. People need to take charge of their own lives and weigh all the possible consequences to their actions. I really hope that after this recent surge anyone with porn videos of themself starts deleting them and never makes such a recording again!

Chapter 17:32 – “And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)), and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him).”

Our people (the advice is firstly for myself) must purify their hearts, make their intention to love and fear Allah by seeking knowledge about Him, drawing nearer to Him, give up polytheism and follow the way of prophet Muhammad who was the final prophet. Smart letter;but not clever. Are you ready to make that a political issue? There are laws to protect the under age from such behavior, but adults choose to do what pleases them. They should blame no one else for their action.Pretty sure they knew that they were video taped.

I have to agree with the person who wrote this letter. If two adults decide to make porn and put it online to give themselves fame, good for them. Go hollywood. If you agree to it you are not a victim. But our laws must protect those that do not give permission. sex isn’t wrong but exploitation is. and when you put a video of someone else in a situation like that online without their permission and causing embarrassment or worse for them, i must say that is exploitation to the max. and we should protect victims. those who put those films and pictures on the internet are infringing on others rights and should be punished. #simpleasthat

DOn’t be an idiot. There is nothing wrong with adults taking pictures or videos with someone they trust. But it is a breach of trust when one party shares it with others whom it was not intended for. The problem isn’t the videos or pictures, it is the maliciousness of those who would use them to exploit, embarrass and cause harm that is the problem. Keeping your money and tv at home isn’t a problem. The problem is when someone comes in and steals it and thus deprives you of peace of mind, security and possession. Think before you speak.

Reading comments like this tells me that Dominicans (not Dominica) are going to hell in a handbasket. Our level of thinking in this 21st century is mindbuggling – at the base of the gutter. And then we dress up and go to church because we are christians. Love thy neighbor as thyself – show some empathy.

I cannot imagine a husband and wife who love and respect each other wanting to take pictures – or have pictures taken – of them having sex.

Is she not enough for him :?: Is he not enough for her :?: Instead of looking at a picture of the last time why would they not simply have sex again?

No married couple in a committed monogamous relationship wants those precious moments of intimacy shared with anybody else. They are “private property” – the very heart and core of the marriage. :-D :-D

To have sex with somebody you are not married to is a sin whether you “trust” the person or not. It is a sin whether it is filmed or not filmed.

One only has to read the comments on DNO to see how totally lost any society becomes when people do not let the Word of God be a “lamp unto their feet and a light unto their path”.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

I especially liked the part where the writer said “although I have to say I am not sure since I have not seen these videos or pictures” What a bunch of cattle poop… you probably lost your foreskin to the videos.

People like you Captain obvious always seem to think that everyone is just like yourself. Enjoy nastiness at its height. Those who spread are even worse than the person who started spreading. There are still persons who fear the Lord and will not look at those nasty pornographic videos. Those who do are really sick. If someone ever sent those nastiness to my phone, I would definitely not spread such and would scold whosoever and say to them in no uncertain terms that I would appreciate not receiving such crap from them in the future.

Judge me, say what you want, thumbs down, I don’t care. This must and has to stop.

Very good of you to express your concerns. What i must tell you is this: There are laws against pornographic materials being published or rather pornography. This is why the police officers get involved and ask the public to report anyone involved in these malicious acts. So yes the laws are there to protect these victims. It is just a matter of having proper and correct proof of whoever did it.

I do agree with you re legislation to defend our youth, but do you know that these same young women defend the producers( their partners) feverishly??? So while we want to protect them, they do not give us much choice

I was thinking the same thing in the shower this morning.

Legislation that makes it a criminal offence to distribute porn too, so that all the cell phone carriers can be fined up to 5,000.

I fully support and endorse this letter.
Some people are giving professionals a bad name. When someone trusts you to repair a faulty item, stealing information from it and spreading it is wrong. With regard to the children it is almost a certainty that the young men had malicious intent and are the ones sending out those videos but with the adults it is quite clear that neither male nor female have given permission or sent out said videos for release. A few of the girls have already ended up at the psychiatric unit and one has already attempted suicide. The ripples in the aftermath of this scandal have debilitating effects on not just the women but their families as well. What a person does in the privacy of their home is not to be shared with the public and especially not broadcasted with the Dominican flag via facebook. It may seem funny to some but on an international stage, a country that has the population of the slum of some cities, must have serious security issues for things like this to spread globally and noone has been arrested, fined, jailed or even charged. The perpetrators of these releases are committing a very serious crime and need to be stopped. If this is not brought under control by the authorities then eventually individuals will take these things into their own hands and at that time it will be far too late. We must act now.

And what will that do to the business under consideration? Not every wrong can be legislated away. For example: What legislation can curb a married man’s girlfriend from pretending she is his relative and sleeping on the same bed with the man and his wife? This is the new “in” thing!!

you see no victim until its a close friend family relative, stop being so small minded ,regardless of the victims being wrong no one should have this done to them

    • hey
      September 19, 2013

Pathetic! Are you male or female? If Male then I do understand that you see those videos as pleasure but let me tell you one thing, we women cannot stand to this thing. A sexual encounter is a private thing between 2 parties. When has it been something to shoot and then spread like those that are being done. You do not see any victim there. Wait when it hits right on your doorstep which I really wish it does not. Put yourself in the individual place (I understood that the women’s face are there for all to see). This is degrading to humans.. We are not animals so this thing should stop.

A word of caution to the young ladies — Be on your guard..Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Keep it pure and chaste. Do not let those pleasure seeking men abuse sexually and to add insult to injury , perhaps video you unaware or give you some stupid excuse why it should be videoed and then this. Respect yourself. They will you all kind of names but do not do anything that will come back to haunt you later.
