The plight of Dominican students in Morocco

For any parent, it would be a dream come true if their son or daughter was given the opportunity to go abroad and further their studies but what is the reality behind it all?

What do the students really face when they leave home and venture onto foreign lands, away from the protection of their loved ones? What really happens when parents allow their kids to accept scholarships such as the ones from Dominica to Morocco? HELL!!! that’s the best word to describe the unprofessional system that operates within these said scholarship transactions!

Lack of financial assistance from the student’s own government back home, being escorted to the kingdom of Morocco and then left there as if they were sold by their own government and the parents are made to believe that everything is just fine while the students are the ones suffering!

One would think that I was crazy and that I had no idea what I was talking about or might even ask how I knew all this but I have been doing a special article on the scholarship programs with Moroccan extensions for two months since the 14th of october and I had the opportunity to visit the Cite Universitaire Internationale in Hay Riad Rabbat where I experienced the conditions first hand.

After constructing a survey on the different nationalities the university comprises of, it loomed to me that the worst situation was the DOMINICAN students.

Therefore I decided to focus on that sector. Why the Dominican students? Well for starters, they are the ones furthest from home and they receive the least stipend from their government.

My research has only began but if you are a Dominican citizen, if you know a Dominican or you have thoughts of coming to Morocco to study from Dominica on a scholarship please be cautious or at least receive more information before you do so.

I cannot get down to the basics yet since my research has only began but I assure you that I will most definitely get to the bottom of these bogus scholarship offers which are practically inviting students to undergo harsh and unnecessary treatment just so their government can gain respect or ties with other governments!

DON’T MAKE YOUR CHILDREN SLAVES TO POLITICS!

The government only allows you to see what they want you to see but the students are the ones who know what they are facing on these so-called government scholarships and I will see to it that their voices are heard!

FIRST DOMINICA then GRENADA! No country is safe I’m going to expose every government politician for their bogus plots to make ties with one another at the cost of the wellbeing of innocent students.

first of all , nothing comes easy in life. you should be thankful for any help you get from any countries at this point. and i think the worst conditions in morocco could not compare to what this kids have to endure in santo domingo, i’ve been to both places and i know what i’m talking about. so yes they should take advantage of what they are been offered and get a good education and move forward and not pay attention to all the bullshit politics. if god gives you lemons , make lemonade. santo domingo is in no position to make demands at this point. only rich coUntries can make demands THA
    TS POLITICS FOR YOU.

The reason Government offers scholarship is because these people selected do not have the available resources/security even to take a bank loan. Check the profile of the students who go Venezuela, Mexico, China, Morocco etc they are not from rich families and also not the science and business students who normally get 8 and 9 ones. It is a program which intends to assist some who do not have much so to expect them to help support themselves is unreasonable. The reason these students accept is because they could not do it on thier own and even with thier families. You must deliver what was promised and not expect because tuition is paid (very late too) that these students should not complain about living conditions and high unexpected costs. You do not need a comprehensive study and survey done to give feedback on what students have been telling us from Cuba, Venezuela, Morocco, Lybia etc for years. No need to companre with other countries, everyone knows what was promised to them and it is never delivered. Ever saw the reaction of the people in Ministry of Education if you call or walk in to follow up on your unpaid tuition or overdue stipend – they treat you like shit, like it is your fault they did not get to go to study. This scholarship programs must be reviewed and not continue just because of the bilatteral agreements which exists…..

      @ Private

It is not surprising to read this. This is not how people conduct business and government employees at that. Those government employees need to be trained and to learn business relations, how to interact and communicate respectfully with others. It appears that they act as if the money belongs to them and that they are the ones who withheld the funds. If they do not know how to conduct themselves as employees and treat others who have a valid inquiry with due respect and dignity, they should be reported, either transferred, demoted or fired.

This is a very sad situation, and i feel for those students. one of the most important thing which is mising when people are leaving their country of birth to go overseas weather to study or to seek employment, is the lack of research on the country they are travelling to. No where in theworld is like Dominica, you get nothing free out there, the grassis not greener on the other side, its burnt, and other countries culture are not compatable with ours. parents and students as well should learn about thecountrythey visit, AND DONT LISTEN TO WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES, WHEN THEY COME HOME IT IS NOT AS THEY MAKE OUT. some people if you see how they kliving abroad, then when they come to DA they tell you a lot of lies, and the other thing with us when our family leave and go abroad,we make people believe they are doing well when they are not

Are you guys aware that what we are saying here about mororoco is the very same thing that some ross university students are saying about Dominica and even worse? Culture shock is culture shock it happens everywhere. Ross wants to build their own dorms for first semester student to help them get settled and deal with the culture shock because students are running away for the same reason that we are griping about here. I believe the problem is MONEY. Parents make sure you have money when your kids go away to school. KIDS WHO ARE IN MOROCO SUFFERING OR ANYWHERE ELSE COME BACK AND YOUR FLIPPING HOMES, STUPESSSSSSSS.

Money is the issue, but they never had in the first place and this is why they accepted the scholarship (stipend paid, tuition paid, airfares paid) but when you get there is a different story. We need to stop fooling poor people in this country. They do not have money – not even to buy a ticket and come home…

boy i was waiting for some article to come out about students studying in places like venezuela n moroccoe. cause trust me am so mad right now i can eat a cow. the lfe here in venezuela is a risk and headache. i mean i came here on a scholarship program and just call it my mother money and bank money that have me here. it seems like the government dont no what is the concept of a scholarship. lem me inform him that a full scholarship means payng all expenses for he o she they gave an opportunity to futher there education without he o she family have no expense to there account. trust me i have a school trip to pay for which cost 4000 bolivian dollars which is three times my stipend money at the end of the month where i have house rent to pay for, food, pad, rollon, tooth brush etc where everything in that country is expensive and who gonna pay for it not the government and certainly not that white man fundation they call fundayacucho. these people are dogs when i say dogs i mean dogs.they dont give a shit about we the students in venezuela. i think when the government want to give someone an opportunity to study please send ppl chldren somewhere where dey can be stress free and concentrate on there education cause rght now i feel like am wasting my time here. its full of crap. and after the five years the government want to come and say where they give ppl opportunity to study he want a kick in his ass. the pm must stop full ppl of a country to gain ties with other country buy selling there own people i mean they dont have no heart and sense of humor at all. why send students to some white man country to be abuse and have no representation for there students. i mean come on pm do more than that. show your people what you there for not just sit in yur office with jacket and tie where the students you send venezuela are suffering. every month o so you are coming here atleast call a reunion for all students here to ask dem about ther living here show that you care. not just come venezuela to get money to go back where mabe all me so u sell for chavez. the pm i say is full of crap only care about himself and the little spoil brats in dominica he having inter course with and buy expensive ride for and dimond ring take that money and add to my stipend so i can have a better life here in venezuela.i think you need to read each and every comment here for you to realize what every students are feeling and come to your damn sense stop sell ppl in your country for white man that dont give a shit about them. thank you. have more to say but that shall be it for now.

Dominica. Do not stay in Venezuela mad because you will eat a cow before the end of the week. COntact the ministry to assist you with your return – why try to stay by chavez and get mad – you prefer thier Psychiatric ward? You made a mistake by accepting the scholarship knowing you had no other means to help yourself – so the PM will not send hi personal funds to you to ensure you llive the life in Venezuela. We all knew Venezuela was difficult to live in.

First and foremost let me thank DNO for publishing this compelling article, although it sends an ostentatious message out there to all Dominicans, we need too see some facts, hence I have chosen to comment.
I am a student in Morocco, and I am disgusted by the number of students who are here right now and glorify their situation by posting it on facebook and what not. Life here is terrible, but I wouldnt call it hell.

True we are entitled to receive 1500 dirhams bi-monthly, but ask yourself, have we even received this?

secondly someone mentioned we have “security like PLANTINUM”, don’t be absurd, was it the same platinum security that broke into someone’s room and stole 200 dirhams?

thirdly, you fail to mention that clean, warm water is not easily accessible, students have to venture into the cold to access hot water.

and dont forget that the students were up here for about two months and could not even be registered for school, due to lack of proper documentation by the government.

We as students greatly appreciate this remarkable opportunity but more attention from the government is extremely necessary.
    thank you.

to the future students who wish to study in Morocco, carefully conduct your research, save some money, and decide whether this is really for you, don’t be bamboozled by the government or its representatives

All the scholarship programs are poorly organised. Sometimes you find out you are accepted and have to travel, less than 2 weeks before travel date. You cannot even give your employer notice. People need to decide whether they can tolerate leaving outside of thier comfort zones n Dominica before they accept these weak scholarship offers.

I would never send my child to Morocco to study! With all the talks about scholarship to study in Morocco I did my little research and quality of education is in it’s infancy. People just do a little research for yourself. Education in that place is backward. It is not a place to send our children to compete on the cutting edge. Please take some time to do some reading and you will see for yourself. Please Dominicans, you might say beggers are not choosers, but please don’t send you children there if you love them. I studied in America, a culture we are more use to, and more tolerant, and it was not easy. I can only imagine what those kids are going through so far from home in a strange land. Not because you can’t afford to pay for university to accept anything.

LOL , HOW CLOSED MINDED CAN YOU BE. YOU DEFINITELY DID NOT DO YOUR HOME WORK CORRECTLY. I’LL MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND. MOROCCO IS SAME AS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, (BEACH, PLAM TREES, TOURISTIC , NIGHT LIFE- JUST SAFER , CLEANER AND MORE ADVANCED AND DEVELOPED)
THIS KIDS ARE LUCKY TO GO TO MOROCCO. ITS THE MOST VISITED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AND THE MOST PEACEFUL MEDITERRANEAN MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRY AS WELL AS THE SAFEST (MORE THAN SPAIN, ITALY , FRANCE COMBINED). MAYBE IF THIS DOMINICAN KID GO THERE, THEY WILL LEARN A THING OR TWO. STOP HOLDING YOUR KIDS BACK BASED ON INFORMATION THAT DOESNT MAKE NO SENSE.

Some Dominicans are ungrateful. You get a university education for free and you complaining. If you you do not want it do not take it. UNGRATEFUL BUNCH OF PEOPLE.

I went to study on my own out of Dominica. Did I have a hard time? Yes. When ever you leave your country you will have a hard time.

You all expect Government to do every thing for you. WHAT A CRYING SHAME. Slavery was emancipated in 1833, 178 years ago and yet some Dominicans still have the slavery mentality where the master gave them every thing.

      i agree totally.
our daughter got a scholarship to futher her studies.full scholarship.we were elated, however we knew that we had to pull our weight too as parents.we knew we couldnt just send our girl out there and sit back and say “de government will provide”.we expected some help from the government but we never expected to sit back and relax.this is our daughter’s education and we as parents will work to help her where the government falls short.if we had to take on our own to send her out there to persue her studies in her chosen field it would have been much much more expensive for us so we are thankful and greatful for the help as little as it may be from the government. so parents whose children are out there studing dont forget they are still your responsiblites,be grateful that they got the opportunity to further their education in their chosen fields with help from the government.if you want to complain and whine about every lil problem you may encounter financially or otherwise then the government scholarship programme is not for you.try sending your child to study on your own.the government has hundreds of students out there studying and let me guess, you have only ONE.
Another thing is that some of our kids like the idea of studying far.one thing for you students to always take into consideration is whether or not your parents can afford it.Dont accept government scholarships unless your parents are prepared to put out some good money cause it is NOT an All EXPENSE PAID SCHOLASHIP ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont jump on the band wagon pretending to be blind and when you get out there scream i can see the light.

This article is utter rubbish. If the students got an opportunity for them to go to Morrocco to study for FREE, it is up to them and their parents to take advantage of it. I am sick and tired of people wanting everything for free especially that I have a high student loan to repay.
I understand that they are far from home and the situation may not be the best but where on earth have you heard of any campus is peachy and creamy unless your parents are wealthy. The students in America see so much misery but they do not complain. Things are hard and they bond together and depend on friends and family to survive. Why Should it be different for the students in MOrrocco. It is sickening how people wants everything for free and then blamed the government. I adviced a recipient of a Morrocco scholarship to form a group of good friends and family to assist on a monthly basis and that is what we are doing. While we enjoyed the opportunity of a family member receiving a scholarship and is so far away from home, we do not and will not depend on the government for anything else but the safety of our family member.

Some of these students go to Morrocco and is the shopping mall they want to live. Things they did not have in Dominica is what they want to have in Morrocco, give me a gadam break. If anyone is having a bad and hard time in MOrrocco they need to get their butt on a plane and go back to their mother’s house. Ungreatful set of people. So many Dominicans went away to study and did not receive a dime from the govt but did what they have to do to survive under harsh sometimes racist environment, when you look at them today, they are happy as can be. So we take your concern with a grain of salt, and admonish you to encourage and motivate those students to be appreciative and to get their friends, families and church to pick up a collection for them.
If you are reporting on them living in poor conditions and been treated badly by the Morroccan govt then say so, but not about a stipend. Too ungreatful, I hope the govt find out who are the students who are seeing misere and give them a ticket back to Dominica.

Stop using someone’s situation and generalize for all. People must deliver what they promise. We are aware of the terrible living conditions in all these places and high cost of living so any student should decide before whether they want to accept that or not before they leave dominica.

:( Sorry, the only thing that could have pushed you to write such stems from all the frustration lack of finance brought to you.

We understand, now how do you want us to solve it?
How much money do you need? What else can we do to help?

It’s all about the solutions – from the article take sense discard the non-sense!

Students do what is best for you, you have to be wise.

Stop making it seem so bad — say it like it is –not enough money from stipend ALONE — everything else can do or make do!

Its not a dream its life- make it what you want it to be with God at the center one step at a time.

Morocco is lovely and its a great opportunity for those who are wise (for example: It can be a stepping stone to another university).

Good finance + very very very hard work = great rewards

Thats another attack coming out from another anti Skeritt,it seems to me every thing skeritt does or is doing there are some that just will not be happy.Going and study overseas has never been smooth sailing esspecially when the scholarship is free, those who study in Cuba can atest to that. After reading the atticle i meet a student on line I mean a Dominican student and i question her concerning her condition in morroco and she has not said not a word to beleive that their condition in morroco is bad.You know in time pass not anybody could get the oppotunity that is available now and because those families that could never afford to give their children that level of education it seems to be bad for some people.Thank god for Roosevelt Skerrit for sending my daughter to study i would never be able to give her what she so desired. So all those who has their children in morroco find out for yourselves to know if what that is written is true and base on what you hear dont be afraid to defend your children dream that has come true.

Not making excuses for the government but If we continue making everything political then there will be no success. Get yours in any fashion while i get mine and we’ll have success. Don’t sit and complain about situations because i could be doing the same but instead choose to make a life for myself!!!!!

Seemingly you have ignored the purpose of this message, OUR STUDENTS ARE SUFFERING….i dont agree with the political side of this editorial, however if there is a problem, i am happy that we get to know of it, and something needs to be done, all in all, despite the fact that its a complaint, we have to understand that there are alot going on and majority of it is because of politics. so stop being bias and be understanding, cause sooner or later you might be in a situation and u will want urself heard and ppl might tell u is “politics” you talking….nonsence.

I will respectfully disagree with you. I have received a scholarship from my home government (Antigua and Barbuda). I must inform you that although this letter lacks a full account of the Dominican, Grenadian and Antiguan students’ plight, that doesn’t mean that the complaints are baseless and unwarranted. I can only assume that this is a simple case of, “who feels it, knows it.”

It’s amazing we never seem to complain about our experiences in American Universities, as is those are a bed of roses. Yeah right.

I attended an American University and while I had a wonderful time, I am very much aware of the plight of some students as I worked directly with students.

Yes in New York City I knew of students (born and bred in America) who had no heat nor hotwater in their apartments during winter; they had to turn on their ovens to get heat. And I also know of this Antiguan guy who was literally living on the street; he would shower etc on Campus.

So, its not a bed of roses anywhere. Some of us think that because it’s a scholarship we will be living the life of the rich and famous. Think again.

    • SINISTER MINISTER

DID YOU ACTUALLY READ THAT BEFORE YOU SUBMITTED IT? :?: IF THE GOVERNMENT GIVES SCHOLARSHIP, WHY SHOULD THE STUDENTS BE IN SUCH CONDITIONS. “Yes in New York City I knew of students :?: (born and bred in America) :?: who had no heat nor hotwater in their apartments during winter; they had to turn on their ovens to get heat” WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH OUR PEOPLE ON “GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS”? THE POINT IS; OUR GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT SEND OUR YOUNGSTERS TO BE IN SUCH SITUATIONS…NO MATTER WHERE. NO ONE EXPECTS A BED OF ROSES…BUT WE ALSO DON’T EXPECT A GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP TO MEAN HAVING TO ENDURE SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES.

I know of people who come here to study dropped out, and now the had opportunities and living a successful life. YOu can’t compare Morocco with America. America is close to the Caribbean, there are a lot of West Indians, the culture, the tolerance, the rights, etc. Do a little research on Morocco and on their education system. I would never ever send my children there, not even with a full scholarship! There education system is very backward!

Ok… my brother is in Morocco… up to last week we were talking and he’s ok. His take on this issue- You know what you came for, don’t expect a luxury hotel and you’ll be ok. What can I say.. we skype, chat on FB, call.. and he looks fine, says he’s fine showed us his living quarters- he is content. He thinks some people make a big deal out of nothing and feels that if you have an issue go back home. He personally feels that he got an opportunity and he’s going to make the best out of it. He knows that if he wants to come home we’re ready to send him the ticket.

If they are truly in such abject misery, parents, take a loan or do like others and mount a radiothon for the money to buy your children a ticket home. Even when one lies on a bed of roses one gets stuck by thorns. Nothing in life that is worthwhile comes easy.
To the students out there who are gwayeying to get an education, please keep focused on what you desire to achieve and know that many of us have done it before you sometimes in perhaps worse situations.

We are talking about students on scholarships here. Which means they have earned the right to an education that is properly provided for and that the government of Dominica should see to it that all the necessary accomodations are in place for these students. Say life is not a bed of roses if a student is homesick or stressed out due to his/her studies but not when our government fails to take care of our future academics studying abroad on our scholarships.

Im a scholarship student too (not in Moroco) but i can tell you it is not always easy. Sometimes, your motivation is only to finish and done with it because you are trying to achieve something good.

Trust me you dont want to be going out public with your your plights because i heard about those students they sent down from Venezuela and people get the impression that they were behaving bad, but the negative publicity dont help the government either so the first thing they do is take you out of their way of political fame.

This article is a perfect description of and therefore I will not sit silent on it.

My dear friends at home and abroad am a Dominican studying in Morrocco and i will not say that it is a easy road in Morrocco but this so called journalist have gone way behind the line.

I would like to make it clear that:

1.Our government have never abandoned us.
2.we are not treated as political slaves in Morrocco
3.Our living conditions can never be compared with hell

The greatest challenge we caribbean students are facing here is the complete change of culture and the language(french, arabic)and we are getting through it slowly but surely.

The first year of school in Morrocco calls for alot of hard work which is understandable for studying in any foreign speaking country.

My fellow Dominicans I know that the things that may worry you all the most are housing, security and finance:

1.Housing- for now we all are living in the same place and it’s two persons to a room which consist of two beds, two closet,a huge study table and a face basin.Every floor has 4 toilets, bathrooms and a huge kitchen.

2.Security- on the compound we have more security than platinum.

3.Finance- every two months we are receiving 1500 Dirhams(Moroccan money)plus a stipend every 6 months from our government as 2 lump sums.

Another thing is that you can study up to your Doctorate in Morocco for free, granted that you do well.

I hope that this information would shed light on any inquiries you may have about Morocco.

Oh and thanks to the Governments of Dominica for this wonderful opportunity!

ok lets get down to true talk now first and foremost mr JD when you are writing your articles if u know along the way you are going to be at a dead end with nothing else to say just cut your article short and say to be continued or sit down and plan your article well before you start writting BS cause i dont want my family to be worrying that im so far away suffering that much and lieing to them most times on the phone, plz dont raise my mom pressure we are not babies here its a scholarship i would have really appreciate if we got what we were told but thats just life many things in this world have two sides so seeing that you are here plz make up your mind with what you want cause no one is holding you here against your will we all know where the administration office is also where AMCI office is you dont have to walk much so if you would like get off your lazy behind and go get your ticket back home rather than trying to frustrate the others who are actually trying to hang in there. Before i accepted the moroccan scholarship i did try my best to get futher financial assistance which i was not to successful with but with the lay out of the financial assistance with the Dominican government and AMCI i decided to fully go with the scholarship cause i told myself i am discipline enough to make a leaving because in the long run im going to be the one benefitting so i blocked off all the negative comments and set my mind that im not going to meet a middle class life in morocco there will be some days that i might actually just stay hungry. i am very disappointed not with the prime minister but with the MAN who gave us the run down about morocco, straight up U LIED.All about morocco cheap, pack light, dont carry certain things we are going to loose it in the airport hmmm hmm u should have watched our backs better than that.Fellow dominicans dont stress we are not in hell, well then again idk how hell stays and everyone have their opinion but if JD is in hell i am not in hell with him i am sure trying my best to enjoy my stay in moroc and ensure that i come bck home with something i did not bang all that water for nothing im not backing up that stipen talk that dominican student gave idk how the first set stipens going but if u are in the 2nd set we all know how the stipen issue is here y lie do u get 1500dh every two months plz ans that cause i sure aint seeing it, and yes on the compound we have security but what good is majority of the security guards lol.Housing-well we all know it have some nasty ppl so our personal quaters are neat and tidy but we know how the washrooms are, and dont talk for kitchen im very glad that you listed that for i know we all talk about the kitchen when we are hungry and the kitchen is occupied.I am really not in favor of that negative article seeing that its not 100% true but dont come and sugar coat life in morocco

    Dear J.D,
Please let the students complain of their plights. I don’t think that any parent who has their dau/son in such far away land would like such negative publicity, unless there’s some validity to your story. Having said that, I can imagine that if such conditions do exist during their stay of studies, I’m confident that the students are smart enough to raise the flag. In this age of the Info Tech., whatever is done in the dark, shall be exposed in the bright light, @ the speed of light.
    Sincerely,
    Lougaoo Mem.

NONSENSE!!!!!!!…….i know exactly who you are and everyone knows that you all returned home without a valid reason. Please tell your mommy and the rest of the Dominicans that the reason for your return had nothing to do with the condition of the scholarship its just that you came up to Morocco to live an American life and you didn’t get it.If you had left Dominica with a mindset to study you would be in Morocco all now so SHUT YOUR MOUTH before you get me angry and cause me to expose you.

      • February 15, 2012

go ahead and expose me monkey apparently u now my condition so u can open ur *** and talk go ahead and expose me go ahead

      • February 15, 2012

and if i wanted to live an american life i would have gone to america……

      • February 15, 2012

Those from antigua and grenda that went home also have no reason? if u in morrocco than u can maybe talk until then shut up

        February 15, 2012

@…… I can see why you had to run away and come back to mommy. You do not even know the difference between know and no. People do you know the people who get scholarships? Some of them is connections and the others hairy bank. Most of them have no idea what it is to work hard to get where you want to , they dont know the meaning of sacrifice thats why they keep griping. Check the early University graduates of the island who have big jobs and property they will tell you what they went through to be where they are now.

The first thing any parent should know about sending their kids to study is HAVE YOUR OWN MONEY! I am tired of Dominicans crying about scholarship money, if you dont have money keep your kids here, let them work to pay for their school so even if they get a scholarship they will be able to stand on their own in rought times. Some kids also accept scholarship to go “overseas” to live the “college life.” There are people will legitimate concerns but there are also people who are just spiteful. The point of this commentary was to stir a pot, to see who will comment and say what. Lets watch this space.

I couldn’t support your point more. i am a scholarship student and the truth is many students take up these scholarships without any financial backing form their parents. they have this dependency mentality that the government is obligated to give them a stipend at the end of the month. No one used a gun to force you to take up the scholarship in case you forgot!! the truth is some students will never be satisfied. So to all those who like to complain about scholarship… why don’t you take a loan and send your son or daughter to UWI or to some university in USA or Europe. Maybe you would do a better job at paying housing, tuition and giving your child a stipend.

      February 15, 2012

De people who can afford don’t send their kids to venezuela nor morrocco. Its those who can’t afford that the government is helping. Furthermore I would not go to venezuela nor morocco to study even though I could afford it.
Why are some of us so quick to dismiss and disregard our own people while we reach out and embrace any foreigner with a thick wallet. We will respect and praise morocco for de money we think they spending on us while we spittin in our people face when they share their honest experienced with us. Morocco not obligated to be honest with us about jack. However we to quick to put down our people when they crying out foul or have a genuine greivance that need to be addressed. Free fertilizer in a run down agriculture industry where people in belles cannot sell dasheen will not compensate for how dominicans are treated especially by their own elected officials in government.

I agree. University is expensive, and as a former holder of a scholarship myself, I know that you have to go with your money as well. We cannot expect to stay for years in a foreign land and have no financial plan in place and just depend on the promise of the government. Right now, my advise to prospective students is: Save your money while you still at home working. STOP sewoing your whole pay cheque while you live with Ma and Pa. That way, you have a little something when the stipend is late.

The writer of this article says that life in Morocco is “HELL!!!” so I was preparing to read all about this hell – then nothing. From what I can understand he is just starting this study and the tone is already looking like he is going to bend it so it fits in with his perceptions. You may be correct in your perceptions that it is hell, afterall students are sent to such institutions for good education and fullfilling experiences why not come with all the facts when you have them, then there can be real dialogue. Until then you are just making a lot of noise and saying nothing and we can all see that.

You dont have to go to Morocco to see what Is happening. Just take a drive down to the Cabrits area. The propossed hotel building. There are a few Moroccans working there and they are basically prisoners there. They hardly have any food to eat, these guys were eating partially cooked crabs, while the boss lives in a big house next to the Portsmouth Hospital and drives a government registered vehicle up and down the streets of Portsmouth..

    Admin,
Irresponsible journalism to publish this unverified diatribe. Have you contacted any locals who have relatives studying in Morocco for their account? Have they recieved complaints fron the students? You have a world wide reading public and a duty not to publish things which you can easily check and have not bothered to make a telephone call to do so. It is not good enough to merely repeat what persons have sent you without either fact checking or at least a comment from yu that you have not checked. You can do far better.

I don’t believe your story. just from reading it, this tells someone that you are just another anti-skerrit who is trying to pull down the government. My cousin is in morrocco right now studying and we always correspond. She would have told me if anything was wrong and knowing my aunt she would send for her child.

    • February 15, 2012

From leaving the country the government doesn’t look back on students especially if there is no ambassador to represent them

  68. February 15, 2012

It was high time someone spoke i am nit brave enough to write the media but i shall say one thing i was in morrocco so i know what this person is talking about is facing and there is plenty more to his/her story. I was one of the first set and the one who had to run away from this hell hole along with four other students. students from antigua and grenada has returned home and if i am not crazy more students will abandon this scholarship….. It was high time someone wrote to the media

No one promised a bed of roses. It was a scholarship that they gave. If you know you did not have anyone to help you, why did you go? How is the government to blame for this?

      • February 15, 2012

excuse you i had my own money and all tht done so shut up the idea of a scholarship is to assist not send people children far and abandon them no one said it was a bed of roses but at the same time they should do a background check before they just send pple children up there allu dont know allu dont know allu sitting on allu royals and jus talking negative

      • hmmmm
        February 15, 2012

when u people comment i tend to try my best not to respond, but this time i will.

True it is not a bed of roses, but can you imagine your brother, sister, daughter or son in such a situation. You are just being political. Ofcourse the government is to be blamed for that, they should have done a complete research of the country before deciding to send students there. Skerrit time in office is very short, cause i definitely will not vote for him, although i am currently on a scolarship myself.

Can u imagine that because the government of dominica did not take time to make a written agreement with terms and conditions there are students who had to do about 13 subject of high school level, even after completing university, just so they could be able to graduate. They had to wait a complete year just trying to get things in the way the host country wants it whereas other international students whose country signed a bilateral agreement, were exempted from all that struggle. We dominicans are always the underdogs.

Ok Mr. David, at last someone is speaking out for our children, I myself is a parent of a daughter who is studyig in venezuelan and believe me, our students in venezuela are going through the same plight, its just that they are closer to home. Our venezuelan students are placed in the hands of an agent calle fundyakucho who dosnt care one fig about black people; they take the children, send them to some remote county university in venezuela and the only time they every check them is about half-way the month when they proceed to give to them a thousand bolivas, that money is expected to meet the cost of food, housing and utilities while the housing cast is no less than 800 bolivas, so they are left with 200 change to meet the cost of food and other amenities; granted we as parents try our utmost to take care of our children finances, but what about that parent who cannot afford a hundred to send to his/her child? there are students in venezuela who have to chip-in to help others and yet we are not hearing anything from officials here; where is the good ambassador who are suppose to be taking care of our student in morocco and venezuela? isnt that what the good PM gave him a job to do? instead of sending lawyer letters to our calypsonians who just putting his thoughts in songs………. am saying Fundyacocho is messing up our students and our government is sitting here and accepting it….

It is hard anywhere that you go. You just have to stick together and make do!
