COMMENTARY: We talk and we talk and we talk more

Have you been following the “many discussion bites” on the myriad of talk-shows that currently exist in Dominica? Holidays such as Sundays, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are no exception.

Have you made any conscious note of the discussion topics? Do you always find a common pattern? Is it true to advance the view – my view, that the most common thread in those discussions always seem to start and end with the government of Dominica and Prime Minister Skerrit in particular, however far-fetched the topic may be?

When listening if you still feel inclined so to do, have you noted a number of familiar voices day in, day out, thrice times per show, every week on every conceivable topic? Have you noted that for the more familiar daily voices/callers, they speak and express themselves without fear (talk of democracy in jeopardy) as possessors of the requisite qualification to speak with authority on all or every subject matter – whatever it is?

Has it gotten to you that in large measure the hosts of these talk-shows are often times seemingly not in tune with current developments or are constantly prepared to slant the discussion in a manner that is always anti-government? Is it true to say that discussion topics that does not speak directly to partisan politics more often than not are patronized by certain callers and when they do, they slant it to suit their particular partisan interests sometimes with the help of the supporting hosts?  Have you notice that certain callers to certain talk-shows are granted a laissey-passez as it were to simply rant on and on. I am sure by now I would have aroused the interests of some and the ire of some of the talk-show hosts. I expect a serious tongue lashing.

I ask the questions to make the following point. In another piece during the celebration of our political independence I did make the point and I stand by it that Dominica has made certain progress in its development agenda. I did advance the view as well, that whilst we have progressed, whether some like to believe it or not, there is much more that we could have achieved in the years following independence. Certainly a number of the projects that government is now embarking on should have been a reality many moons ago, indeed before Prime Minister Skerrit’s time on the national stage.

One of the fundamental barriers to advancing our development is talk. We talk and we talk and we talk. We talk to the skies galore with ideas for Dominica’s development. We all know what and how to do what that has not been done. We talk about who is responsible for getting it done whether that be at the policy level or technical and administrative level. Even without specialization in the particular field, we talk with authority on every subject matter.

We know and talk about the millions of dollars that exists in foreign banks across the world just waiting for a simple telephone call or the one page application from a progressively green Dominica for the funds to flow immediately upon completing the application. We speak glibly about the numerous friends and sympathizers who are out there simply waiting for a particular policy from government or personality in government that would serve to woo them to come and invest literally billions of dollars over night. I am certainly not talking about “pappy’s contacts”.

We talk with emotion and passion on Dominica’s development agenda. We always seem to have the recipe. We talk about too much infrastructure to include farm roads, but also talk confusingly about providing incentives to the farmers such as improved access, inputs, a contracted price for the produce and equipment. We talk about stopping the hurricane relief assistance to the fisherman, but in our talk we demand that the fisherman be provided with the knowledge skills and equipment to remain out at sea for longer days. Our roads are in terrible shape and the need for massive rehabilitation is our daily talk. We want an improved road surface, away from the existing deplorable conditions but even when we have made strides in this regard, we always fail to talk about these successes.

Our talk though indicates that we do not want an asphalt production plant anywhere on Dominica. We are the nature island. Asphalt and nature cannot co-exist.

We talk of crime and what tough hand is required to tackle crime. We even assume what our former leaders (Le Blanc, Eugenia, Pierro and Rosie), who themselves were on the receiving side of our talk, would have been thinking and acting, were they still around. We spin talk again, already in dissent over any thought of impending policy that would serve to stiffen and upgrade efforts at crime prevention. We know our constitutional rights and know what law should be enacted to deal with crime. So we talk about what should be done to ensure that the criminal is always protected against law enforcement and law abiding citizens. Yes, we keep talking, because we have all the answers and those in authority, although they were bred, live and work in the same society like us, do not have a clue. We talk about attempts to stifle democracy not even realizing that the democracy we enjoy allows us to talk, more complain without fear about democracy being at risk.

We talk about challenges in the housing sector and poverty of our people and what needs to be done. So whilst we wait for development programs aimed at relieving the suffering to take effect, we keep on talking about the hopelessness of our people. We conclude in our talk that government must not assist directly because any such government assistance is encouraging “mendicancy’ and is always administered in a corrupt way befitting only one group of people.

As for agriculture we have all the talk and answers to improving productivity, establishment of lasting and rewarding marketing arrangements not only locally but externally even with WTO reality. Our well established and chronicled challenges to production (labour, suitable lands, difficulties with inputs, per capita production) seemingly are not important as the political expediency of our submissions. We talk about making financial incentives available to the industry, but when certain facilities are made available we tear them down as being inadequate, shortsighted, corrupted and partisan. Oh, boy we talk and talk. On a recent talk show, a farmer now turned talk show co-hosts submitted that the 2010 breadfruit season will not be as productive as 2009. Somehow he got to know that Prime Minister Skerrit likes breadfruit, so he wants to know what “Skerrit” will do for the upcoming festive season. I am sure I heard about a corrupted, government manipulation of the breadfruit season.

Yes, our talk without end particularly on subjects and issues that are beyond us is our “cup of tea”. It’s like we must talk. We have to be heard. Imagine before a local agency could complete its work on a recent matter, we were already talking about inviting foreign interests to come and do the work the local agency is capable of doing. But then with a flip of our tongue, we talk again about foreign influences.  Talk about foreign influences. We talk and lament about the prevalence of Chinese stores in Dominica and the danger they pose to indigenous businesses. Guess what, when it suits us and our pocket we forget about heart wrenching the talk we just delivered and rent out our own premises to who? The very same Chinese we complained about in our talk. So instead of one store the Chinese now have two stores. But we continue to talk.

In our desire to talk and keep talking, irrespective of truth or objectivity we even run the risk of being contemptuous of the same court we like to criticize and praise in the same breath or when it suits our purpose. Then we talk again and offer up an offensive, more of an aggressive, tongue in cheek, not accepting liability of an apology, because we must continue to talk.

Even when we do not admit to our own shortcomings, we talk in a manner that will not only serve to showcase another individual’s sad story –, but we talk so much that we do not even realize we are talking about and reflecting our own self. That notwithstanding, our life size ego will not stop us from talking. We become so proud, pompous and self righteous that we simply wish to continue talking because our silence may not be enough talk. When through circumstance (financial, family or social) we are forced to remain tight lipped even if for a few days, there is never a shortage of ready and willing replacements for more talk even when we really cannot talk. But talk we must.

Oh! By the way, the people of Dominica, the classical, vast majority by any stretch of the imagination, not virtual, have been talking with a certain deafening silence. Those of us who without let up either do not hear what the vast majority is saying, wished we had not spoken at all. It is as though we have been endowed with a God-given right to silence the vast majority of silent talkers with our never ending chatter and absolutely excessive, raucous verbiage. But then again, whether we chose to be part of the minority blabbermouth or of the vast majority of “silent talkers” it is our right so to do.

The constitution of Dominica provide for both of us. Dominica’s forward development agenda is not about how much or how able we are in talking. It is rather what we talk about that will inform and spur our actions for national development.

Ronald is indeed correct. There are many people not only in Dominica but who reside elsewhere in the world who do a lot of talking and which are nonsensical. They can fill your head with a lot of crap.
As I have always stated, there are those who do not appreciate sensible articles. They do more talking than action.
I always like to revert to what I read. Our Lord Jesus Christ said to a holy nun now departed, Sister (Saint) Faustina Kowalska of Poland: “The din bothers him.” This was written in her diary and later a book: “Divine Mercy in My Soul – The Diary of Sister (St.) Faustina. This occurred in the early 1900’s. Whenever I remember this I consider that today the population has grown and how much more “the din” of all that talking bothers Our Lord. Much of this talking is a lot of crap, on TV, in person, in boardrooms, in business, etc. Nothing is achieved from all this talk and nothing will be achieved.
A holy man, a Saint said: “Speak more to God and less to people.” He has a godly point.
Now, it depends on what we are talking about. If we wish to talk/write, it should make sense. To the educated certain relevant articles do make sense. To the uneducated it makes no sense to them.
Obviously it did not cross your mind that there are those who are spoken to intelligently and who will laugh at everything. There is the saying: “Fools laugh at themselves.”
In the Old Testament, the Book of Sirach 20:10 – it is stated: When a fool hears something, he is in labor, like a woman giving birth to a child.
Sirach 22:13: A wise man’s knowledge wells up in a flood; and his counsel, like a living spring.
Sirach 22:14 – A fool’s mind is like a broken jar – no knowledge at all can it hold.
Sirach 22:15 – When an intelligent man hears words of wisdom, he approves them and adds to them; the wanton hears them with scorn and casts them behind his back. A fool’s chatter is like a load on a journey, but there is charm to be found upon the lips of the wise.
It is also stated: “After speaking to a fool, he asks you what’s up.” This one always make me laugh.
Ronald, your article was well stated and written. Keep up the good work. Life is a learn process. I love reading educating matters. There are those who need to smarten up, be knowledgeable and put it into action for their benefit and that of Dominica.
    God bless you!

    True that.

Oh, boy!. See what a personal opinion can do. It has only created more talk. It has certainly exposed certain inherent weaknesses in our democracy and our attitude to each other. Why can’t we respect each other. Ronald was described by someone who claim to be his cousin as a “maco’ for his opinions. If that is what we refer to as democracy being under threat then, those who cry out the most to save democracy have a lot of work to do. There is great suspicion that those who took offence with the article came form the “blue” side. They did not appear to be tolerant of another perspective The “blues” like the “reds” must each convince their very own to exercise an ability to accept a different view even when that view is skewed. Of, coourse there is nothingto prevent one sided from attempting to convince the other that their side s the correct side. That is democracy at its very best. Ronald did say that we can respectfully disagree with each other.

For his part Ronald must not give his cousin the “cold shoulder” if that is true. He must a learn lesson or two from his publicly espoused philosophy, providing of course his cousin does not carry a secret tape recorder, and he must do it in public so as not to give his cousin or any body for that matter any reason to refer to him in a defamatory way.

People of Dominica we must move on. “Talk” only, although Ronald himself joined in the “talk” by itself will not move this country forward in a way we all want to see.

Urban Maroon. Keep talking untill you cannot talk anymore – its your right to do so. If I read what was siad in the article you too have a right to talk, talk, talk untill you die. You can chose to keep the talk talking going. In similar fashion, like you, Ronald has a right your right to his opinions as well. You too talk or welcome the never ending talk. on the otherhand he has chosen to write. It is your choice either to agree or diasgree. Your right as well. What is wrong with that? What is important is how do we narrow (certainly not eliminate) the differences of opinion as to how best to move Dominica forward. That is the fundamental issue.

I am not for suppressing democracy but what is all this talk doing for you and everyone else? Really? And I am not speaking from a political standpoint either as I am not a supporter of any party.

Me myself could not read that long epistle about too much talk in Dominica because is more talk. When you cannot even it on the radio, you get it on the internet from editorials and blogs, Dominicans like to talk so why you trying to take away our culture from us. Look how much you talking and now I have to talk some more to respond to your talk on a thrusday night and then Friday morning someone will respond and the talk continues. So what’s this about too much talking.

But you are right, there is much too much talk but do not try to say is one set of people doing it. We all have the propensity to talk.

Reading is what gets one to be knowledgeable since we need to be so to be able to participate in meaningful and objective discussions.

Persons who enjoy reading are very knowlegeable and they learn a lot of things which they would other wise not have known if they did not read.

I think those of us who like to comment should enjoy reading so we would become more knowledgeable in the things we want to comment on and if we used to read, we would not make fools of ourselves by commenting baseless and uselessly and even insulting and disrespecting others.

We would be able to give alternatives, suggestions and feedbacks!

      Just food for thought.

Check the time of day the commentary was submitted – 11:10 a.m. Is Mr Charles a Public Servant or just another Ghost Writer? I guess he should be focused on doing the work of the Forestry Division at that time of day rather than spending time writing these tedious commentaries. Ronald, matters of State is not a ” bakes and fried chicken ” operation.

    ADMIN
I am not defending Mr. Charles, but his article was submitted the evening/night before.

    • Hey just giving my two cents
      January 6, 2011

Hello Mr Charles very well said and I commend you on this article as it truly reflects what is happening in our Nation.

Again more talk and talk and more talk to even talk on how and when Mr Charles was writing his article. Even to insinuate that he should be focusing on the work of the Forestry Division.

Talk and Talk and talk without facts. Even admin had to clarify.

People this is 2011. Learn to read and read objectively. Mr Charles’s article touches on a very important challenge in our society – that is talking and wasting time talking when one could use that time to do something constructive (action). This talk and more talk is hurting our society..
Now it would seem that persons want to tell persons what to do with their private time. Again more talk and without facts – just talk for talking sake.

Even being rude to make reference to the the gentleman’s ” bakes and fried chicken ” operation.
! who made you an expert in matters of State and someone else cannot comment on matters of State.

I guess “I will be singing for my supper” in this one and as to tongue lashing, I will still continue to call on our people to be respectful and to be proactive and before talk, talk, we can do something in our communities.

Just to tell those who are seeking my blood simply because i dare penmy thoughts on what I percieve to be too much talk in Dominica, they will not silence me. Not even my work colleague. I have rights like every other Dominican. I suppose my commnetary went to the heart and sole of their modus operandi so I have become the latest target for their witchhunt if and when they get the opportunity. The experiences of Velma Paul, Jeff Scotland, Johnson Jno. Rose et al stlil linger in my mind. For my part I was given a stern rebuff when a former Minister told a close friend of mine, “the Freedomites time is over. Now is our people time. If they want training they can go to the bank for money or leave. That application willnot leave my desk”

If what I said did not mean anything to them, then they would simply pass on. In one comment someone said I should be jailed. Can you imagine how far we have come. We cannot tolerate each others view points. As though that was not enough my colleague joined in, went further with the hate mongering and even identified my place of work. To my friend and others, I have had my personal computer at home for more than 12 years now.

If what I said brings pain, its regretted. The intentiion was and still is for us to role back the negativism. Let us be pragmatic and objective. Let us speak about the issues, confront the issues at all cost, find constructive solutions. In the fianl analysis, my humble submission is that it cannot be that everything in Dominica is negative. If that is singing for my supper, no apologies are necessary

MAGWAY SAH! My cousin is saying that “we cannot tolerate each others viewpoints” but my blood relative would not even greet me when he sees me in Dominica. Magway dah Franco!!!!!!!

          January 7, 2011

Can you at least for once say something positive. Trevor I don’t think that this is the forum to say that Ronald is your cousin and he did not say that we cannot tolerate each others viewpoint. And if he is your blood relative .. do you have to come on DNO to even try a fight (this is in your genes) to have a fight with your own “Blood Cousin”? Trevor I love to read and I have read your comments on most of the forums and you never have said anything positive. You are always preaching and politicising everything on DNO.

Pardner I need to see a new you no mattter who you support. I have always said to perons on this forum that our Father is looking down on us and He loves us dearly and he is not happy at the way we are behaving towards our fellowmen. Degrading and disrespecting and also hating. Hatred is actually showing in the way we comment. With our hatred comes inciting the less intelligent persons in our society as they look up to us as role models. We are always protesting and opposing for opposing sake, what message are we sending to them especially the young ones? Then they become violent and who has taught them to be thus violent. We

I look forward to see you write an article like Franco – something substantial and refreshing so persons can comment and I would think that you would be a more learned person than the person that you protray on DNO.

Well as I indicated on one of my comments – I don’t mind “singing for my lunch and breakfast as well” but right is right and wrong is wrong. We need to show a little more love and respect for our fellowmen and we need to know that we are all ” Dominicans” who have a nation to build collectively.

          Best Wishes Trev foer 2011!

Interesting article… it is slanted to the Red side, but many factual points were raised. What is more interesting? The number of comments that still dismiss the “talk” in this article as propaganda. I say this, “yes it is propaganda.” But if we look up the definition of propaganda, we should realize that nearly everything is propaganda, because propaganda is “information aimed at influencing the audience”. In this day and age is there any form of public message, advertisement, print, script, etc that is NOT aimed at influencing the audience??

Bottom line readers; things are getting done in Dominica. Roads, schools, bridges, walls, etc are all getting built. And many of them are free of charge! I am not satisfied though, because these forms of “development” are not sustainable. When China runs out of money, or when Skeritt falls out of favor with Chavez THEN where will be left? But these questions do not (should not) diminish the positives that are being done. And that is my problem with the usual people who “talk talk talk” – they are unwilling to acknowledge the good. They say “yes DLP building roads, BUT”… there should be not BUT. The real conversation should be, “yes I! An easier trip from Roseau to Melville Hall, what’s the next step”.

But the talkers are not interested in “the next step”. The talkers are only interested in getting into power (not all the talkers, just those who talk the loudest). I would be happy to assist in getting Dominica to the next step even if I don’t get elected to office, or get a full scholarship to study, or get a new contract to do business for Government. I would be happy because I am a patriotic Dominican, and I strongly believe that a healthy Dominica is a healthy me.

As a country, we need to see through the political games. We hear many talkers talking about corruption and villas; we hear other talkers defending dual citizenship and gifts from foreign ambassadors. In the end it is simply a fight between two parties who want the same thing – control of Dominica. If we can see through the talk, then we would have more right-minded Dominicans talking. Those with expertise in practical areas of agriculture, finance, hospitality management, trade, economics, scientific research, etc. It is the talkers who prevent some of those same experts from returning to Dominica after their studies. Would you really want to return home if the everything is just “talk talk talk”? I returned home because I have a drive stronger than most, but it is not for the faint of heart.

I was really surprised by a few of the comments on here because even though Mr. Charles’ article is slanted to support the Government, much of what he said is true, regardless of who you support. What many Blue supporters don’t realize is that if they were in power, they would be suffering the same “talk talk talk”. So the problem isn’t restricted to one party or the other.

I wish Dominica all the luck in the world this coming year and the next 20 years after that.

    That is My2Sense.

South Africa was supposedly a democratic country but the black people and those whites who tried to help them were afraid of their government. Yet there were a few blabbermouths ike Mandela, Tutu and Biko who were villified by the government and their propermouth supporters. The reason why there are so few blabbermouths as you call us is because the proper mouths are afraid to talk because of what they fear the government will do to them and others because they want something from the government. The worse kind is those who come out in defence of the government because they want the government to hear them defending. Democracy is dead when the people are afraid of their government, it should be the other way around. If those who talk stop talking then there is nothing left. It is to be noted that DNO is suddenly the target of long commentaries, is that a new strategy by the political warriors to reach the disapora readers?

MR . I listen and heard you loud and clear.i agree with you that there is progress taking place in DA. you right these are things that should be done in the interest of DA development, and should not be feather in anyone’s cap. It’s 32 years since independance and we were suppose to move together in progress, but what took place, i doe like you , i doe support, so what ever you do is not good enough.Guess what; weather you like it or not ,” it it’s like rain” when it comes all of us gonna use it. My only wish; we would think of the kids , the future, cus all these talk do to them is confuse them. Sometime it’s good to talk, but if you talk without “slant” like you just did, it might help people who really listen.I listen to all the Radio shows , and both sides talk talk talk, With the vast media access we have today, every body have their mouthpiece. Some station hide their slant but some are open “rant”, but i listen. And i know what you just did was talk too, with your own slant, so to each his own.but it’s good to talk, but from the “Heart”, and not just to oppose but to give suggestion also, so those who are listening can learn , and not get worked up.But what you talk about is ture, we all like to talk,so what should do? I so agree with you. They are just adding to the talk they so despise, and the fact they Know so much on whom is talking about what and where shows they must be on the receiving end of the talk.He needs to take his own advice and shut up. Less Talk For all of us.

And you talk, and talk, and talk! What an epistle! The Epistle of Ronald Charles! If you had any sense you would know that democracy is indeed in jeopardy in Dominica never mind your mind bugging incoherent epistle. I also like to add that not only democracy is in danger this Government and its cronies have introduced McCarthyism in Dominica– Add “for Truth Justice & Righteousness to your list this is stuck on the number 29– Oh I noticed it grew from 20- to 29–

McCarthyism defined : “A 1947 propaganda comic book published by the Catechetical Guild Educational Society warning of the dangers of a Communist takeover. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence. The term has its origins in the period in the United States known as the Second Red Scare, lasting roughly from the late 1940s to the late 1950s and characterized by heightened fears of communist influence on American institutions and espionage by Soviet agents. Originally coined to criticize the anti-communist pursuits of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, “McCarthyism” soon took on a broader meaning, describing the excesses of similar efforts. The term is also now used more generally to describe reckless, unsubstantiated accusations, as well as demagogic attacks on the character or patriotism of political adversaries.”

This absolute ignorant or in many cases such as yours intellectually dishonest rubbish- “If you are not singing praises to Skerritt you are against Dominica, must stop!!

We continme with talking – our favorite past time. If Ronald Charles is not singing the Opposition’s praises then he is for Skerrit. I suppose “Truth,Justice and Rigteousness” would have been happier at lunch time if Ronald had sung the praises of the ongoing campaign to bring “boots and chaos” on the streets of Roseau. If Ronald had joined in the chorus to say that nothing is happening in Dominica except corruption, that would have brought some satisfaction to you. How quickly we can savage someone who does not speak our language – or simply disagree with our position. You like Ronald have every right to hold different views. Diasgreeing with the views of Mr. Charles does that make him a lesser mortal, nor does it impose on your right to chose to see Dominica’s development only in the negative.

      Let us agree to diasgree.

Could you please tell me what and who is opposition? Do you mean that everybody who disagrees with the policies and behavior of the Skerritt Government? Or you mean the opposition party? You guys are alienating people who although they disagree with certain aspects of the Government would be willing to give praise when and where it is due… Besides no Government should expect to receive an award for doing what they were elected to do in the first place, do you get an award for accomplishing the tasks assigned to you at your job? I think not, but wouldn’t you be confronted if you don’t or if you do what you were not supposed to do on your job? I think so. MY objective is not to sing anybody’s or any party’s praises. Obviously your idea of development is not my idea of development. For me development has to show itself in the people… Yes infrastructural development is good, but there is much more to development… I am not impressed with the superficial and shortsighted idea concrete and steel development as you seem to be. Have you seen the amount of skyscrapers that are in North Korea? And the citizens are eating dirt when they sign and dance to Kim Jung ill? Maybe you should take a look!
