A message for Dominica

A lovely view of Fresh Water Lake from the hill. * Photographer: Gershelle Noel

Dear Sirs: Can I please, through your web site, pass a message of thanks and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to the wonderful people of Dominica.

My wife and I spent a truly amazing three-week holiday with you in March of this year. This was a very special trip as my wife was born in Portsmouth 53 years ago when her father, Dr. Hamblett, was the doctor for the north of the island from 1955 to 1959. Jen was born in 1957, but the family left when she was three years old and this was her first trip home 50 years later. I use the word home because we both really did feel at home and that was particularly so when people found out Jen’s connection with the island.

We will certainly be back.

So we have a family tradition that we bring back from any holiday: some bottles of local beer – one to open on Christmas Day; the other on New Year’s Eve. So we will be opening a couple of Kubuli’s then remembering our brilliant time with you and toasting the wonderful people of Dominica.

Thanks and very best wishes to all.

Rob & Jen Cornock

We all know that Dominicans adore strangers in the land. See how they love their Haitians and Chinese people, some recognize it, some don’t. Maybe this will motivate the Chinese to write about how great they feel to be treated as first class citizens in Dominica while Dominicans are being treated as dirt.. Yeah everybody is superior and is treated with kindness, love and dignity while local people who have no name, no power, no voice.. Don’t even ask about Dominicans outside of Dominica who speak up on issues concerning their country, Dominicans who take interest in the politics and governance of their country. What else is new? But it is nice to hear that somebody is grateful enough to say thank you.. We welcome you back!

But wait a minute…There are more comments lambasting the negative comment made by that A.h.,than positive ones praising those two beautiful people,..and rightly so…The idiot was way out of line…..
Those were kind and encouraging words about our beautiful Island by these two wonderful people….
Let’s focus on the positive instead of the negative………Thanks, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, to them as well……..

And to my fellow Dominicans, let us put our differences aside;for now,..(L.O.L)..,and abstain from all the negativity, and name calling, and let us wish each other Seasons Greetings…..
So to all my fellow Dominicans at home and abroad,Prime Minister and members of Govt.,members of the Opposition U.W.P and D.F.P, and all their respective family members…..Friends and Foes alike…..May YOU ALL have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a very Happy,Prosperous and Safe NEW YEAR.
GOD’S Blessings and Peace upon us all and our beautiful Island.

Allu not easy nah pal. So a person gives an opinion that is contrary to the majority and allu jump all over the person like dat? So there is no room here for a dissenting view?

Come on guys, we are bigger people than dat. There is room for all views – positive and negative.

    • Lizavier4Jesus
      December 22, 2010

      To Piper

Well if the person did not receive space, no one would know what he/she said. Yes, people have the right to their views. But out of 25 comments to this point, the “well loved” against other counts is 23-2. I would not want to be one of those 2.

It is good to speak or to express views, whether they are negative or positive, but there are times when it is much, much better to keep silent.

Why be so hard on Salop?
Ok, maybe he shouldn’t have written or expressed his opinion in that way
But whilst I came close to tears, reading the positive letter from Ron and Jen,
I too considered both questions Salop asked.

      Shame on you.

You should be pleased that they took the time to write. This will make those who met them feel good that they are appreciated.

I know many Caribbean people from various islands, and while living abroad they do not class the land of their birth as home.

      December 22, 2010

On behalf of fellow Dominicans I apologize for the insensitive words of the person named “Salop” expressed to Jen Cornock and her husband Rob in the United Kingdom.

To the both of you, your family, and friends over there, I say Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. I live in Toronto, Canada; so you must be aware that I am going to be having a White Christmas, just like you, that is if you are spending Christmas at home, in the United Kingdom.

I have not had that Sunshine Christmas, that folks will be enjoying in Dominica, since 1973. But it won’t be much longer from now onwards, by the Will of God. Thank you for that beautiful letter.

My official name is Elizabeth Lina Xavier But my friends call me Liz

  19. Is that so?
    December 21, 2010

Now DNO, that’s what I call a positive posting in this season of goodwill.

We need to be posting more of this sort of stories (particularly this week) instead of the usual negativity, hatred and destruction of each other, which we have recently been accustomed to.
