Broken wall threatens road access to the south and homes

Dear Editor:

This time of year we get regular ground swells.

One or two more nights of ground swells and the broken wall will fall, leaving only earth at the mercy of the breaking waves. Once this happens the homes will be at risk of falling into the sea.

Thanks for publishing this urgent concern.

It is sad to see a road in this condition – apparently neglected. Safety, safety. Safety is NO. 1. This section of road has failed (it is not failing- it has failed), and needs IMMEDIATE attention. It poses an immediate danger to pedestrian and motorist. First thing, that section of road needs to be barricaded right now. Place highly visible signs prior to and at the location to alert motorist. Come Mr. Blackmore and the rest of the government, you all have traveled extensively and see how people take precautions in conditions like that _ come on engineers in Dominica. Even if this was not in my community, as an engineer I could not have passed this failure and not demand immediate attention.

People don’t be fooled by what is on the surface. You dont know how much damage has occurred where you cant see. There could be undermining under that already narrow remaining region of rd. Imagine an unfamiliar motorist driving that area at night. I see catastrophe.

I agree with you 100% Voice of Engineer, they know about it and they are ignoring it, this road failed many years ago…
But come to Pointe Michel and see where government members living..No where near that area they don’t even have to pass there.

But there is an alternate road that can be used!!!!

There is no need to try and incite people about a road that has to be totally demolished and reconstructed where as compare to the Canefield cliff road if there is a flood no vehicle can pass freely.

This does not happen here in Point Mitchel and the old houses by the sea need to be demolished as well to widen the road.

you see, there is a differnce between Dominica nice and Dominca is a developing country. Yes blame Jerry, the only Dominican with the balls to take the goverment to task. Guess the money to fix it went in the ministers pocket.

“Dominca nice oui boy”, we have been stuck there forever and there are no plans to get out of “stuck on nice”

The government of Dominica and CDB is following exactyly in Jerry’s road map. Get more stringent with the funds and how it is spent. This area of Dominica Pointre Mitchel has been earmarked for a retaining wall for many years now. It is already three years now since a finacing agreement was signed between the government of Dominica and the CDB. The CDB is behaving exactly as Jerry Brisbane would want. Be tough when lending to Skerrit, shift the goal post at every turn before releasing the funds. That is how we want every development project in Dominica to be managed. When the implementaion is delayed then the costs goes up due to weathering and more frequent and destructive natural disasters. Tthis will undoubtedly force an application for additional funds which would trigger a complete review of the original application because the old application is now dead. The process now goes back to square one as though it is the first tiemthe CDB is seeing such an appication from Dominica. Then all the attendant pre-requisites when applying for a loan fall in line. Give me Chavez and China everyday. Once they agree that you need the money and an arrangement is arrived at between the two countries, then the funds are released in a short time without all that bureaucracy. The bureacucracy when doing busienss with the CDB is simply mind boggling. But I suppose those of the elk of Jerry Brisbane are enjoying the CDB’s machinery, because more loans we get from the CDB will mean a slower pace for our development. in the interest of the people of Pointe Mitchel who are immediately affected, I wish the CDB would behave like a truly developmental organization and move quickly with the project.

Mr. Blackmore, do something in the interim, though.

Blame the governments incompetence on Jerry Brisbane. I guess Jerry is to be blamed too for the state of Agriculture, Small Business, the state of the hospital and Manufacturing. Jerry is to be blamed too for our ever widening trade deficit and export import imbalance. It is people of your elk that keep Dominica back with your politically blind eyes, lack of knowledge and ignorance.

it does not matter, whoever is in charge at the moment is responsible, ma charles or edison or patrick john is not in power, those in power have every opportunity to fix it, I guess a state house is more important. they could also use that state house money to build more sewer processing plants, to avoid running into “them” when we swim The only people that can do anythings are those in power.

Dominicans need to comprehend money management and socio-economic cultural development. You place “ministers” in command of ministrys that they are not qualified to work yet they are in “command of those ministrys”. that’s just a reflection of the people in command cause if i am ill i would definitely go see a doctor not a labourer.

    February 25, 2011

Doh worry people. They will repair it only after the entire road falls into the sea. Then it will cost them 10 times to make the repairs. That is how we do work in Dominica.

    • Anonymous
      February 25, 2011

Then they will go on radio and TV and boast how much money they spend on road for Jean La Pointe, when they pay 10 times what it should have cost. Remember prevention is better than cure, and time and tide waits on no man, and in this case the tide is literally( really) coming in, while we been wasting time.

  11. stioc
    February 25, 2011

guess it’s time to move, i think youall are askingfor the wrong assistance here. the houses are too close to the sea. no room for expansion of the road. a new location for your homes should be requested instead.

maybe that ‘s why they ain’t doing anyghing about it. they’re thinking you guys will finally get fed up and relocate

    • BELZBOB
      February 25, 2011

This is one of the many things 27 million $ could do to improve the lives of the Dominican people instead of beautifying and modernizing a building that very few Dominicans will ever frequent. If you are going to say that you are doing things for the people, why not let the people vote on what they need?

      • Justsaying
        February 26, 2011

I wonder how easy it will be to relocate people? These people do not want to move from where they are leaving just like the people for the airport. How are they suppose to develop the country when people always have to interfare with what the government want to do?

        • BELZBOB
          April 6, 2011

Are you saying what you think they will want or have you asked any of the people personally. Because I have. And the only fear they have about moving is that they don’t get less than what they’re currently worth. For those that are not under loans they don’t want to have to get loans and for those that currently have loans they don’t want to be further burdened with higher payments or more installments.
The real sad thing is to see the real lack of trust in the government because they don’t trust that the government will do what’s in their best interest.

What is more important, making a safe invironment for the citizens of that area or a palace for the presedent. I’m sure it won’t take a fraction of that 27 million to put things right for the people.
You should organise and protest your government.

    • BELZBOB
      February 25, 2011

Be very careful to find out the rights and the permissions needed to protest. I realize that Dominicans lately have not paid much attention to the serious matters that affect them as individuals, but basically WE Dominicans have given up the right to a successful protest action.
On that note, I agree with you wholly that we should demand that better decisions be made with what is done with our country’s finances and we should find a way to legally insist that the majority of the people benefit, not just a privileged few.

      • Anonymous
        February 25, 2011

We can protest right here, without fear of arrest, and they will get the message. Every village/constituency need to spell out the many needs of their areas: help for agriculture and farmers, schools, healthcare, hospitals, roads, water supply etc etc. They read the news, they will get the message, and they will see what the people that they elected want them to do with their hard earned tax dollars. They are the government of the people, and so everyone should benefit.

        • BELZBOB
          March 2, 2011

I agree totally. All of Point Mitchel should protest. There is no way that they are going to take everyone to jail and there is definitely no way that they are going to use violence against people who are asking for assistance and who are in desperate need of that assistance. Too many of our little voices are squeaking in the corners. It is time to let our voices come together in the country and make a beautiful, demanding and revolutionary sound. It is time we demand that our government work for us and not we work for the government.

Would they have told US the people how much they were spending on the refurbishment? Would they have told US the people who are paying for it that it is a loan?
        I would like to know.

Let’s see what will be said about my suggestion. I hope, but do not expect an intelligent or respectful reply.

This comment is very damning to the present government. If you are saying that they have known about this deteriorating condition for years and have actually chosen to ignore it for so long, then they are a real failure to the Point Mitchel people.

when something tragic happens thats when they will fix it.my fellow dominicans take a look at the world right now and see what the citizens are doing to bring down government.its time we start our protest via facebook and tweeter let the world see our road condition in dominica and our so called ministers keep on refusing to adresse the situation.come on lets start our uprising and protest.

      February 25, 2011

That is the best thing to do right? look at all the ish around the world and be a copy cat? Only dumb people make dumb statements like that. So when they start all the protest and things get out of control and folks start getting killed people like u the so called worried dominican will be singing a different tune.. Since i know myself that road like that, since when UWP was in power, but noooo allu will make it about the labor party not doing nothing..I tell you some of ya’ll are just ignorant little pricks who have nothing better to do than belch hatred and create controversy… What u are a jean la pointe or what? you are one of the matt supporters who just sit and say the gov’t dis and dat…. really you want to protest and you want to use facebook and twitter really now. I all for the improvement of the road clearly that is a danger but if you want to make a statement you really think that is the right medium. Like you said look at the condition of the world and how governments are being brought down but are you also looking at the cost. Do you know how many lives have been lost in these protest actions. the residents of the area need to let the severity of the situation be known this article is the first step. I trust that they have also made complaints to their representative. Let us Dominicans stop portraying our country so negatively. Use the right mediums to get our points across.

We are rejoicing and believe it is a good thing that is happening in the Middle east.i am not worried about the rioters.I am sure al of us will feel the pinch. When Egypt and now Libya will get an Iranian style leadeship, now we will know what rejoicing will be.Egyptians and Lybians knew what they had. They do not know what they will get. Last year when the Iranians had their own protest and thousands of people died. did we hear the opposition say anything about “murdering” of iranian citizens? I suppose it was not politically correct since the Skerrit government does not have diplomatic relations with Iran.

So long we telling them to fix the road all they saying wait for the seawall; how it does not make sense to fix the road when he seawall is comming. SInce mid last year the road is like that now its just getting worse. Where is the so called Parl Rep. At least for once the Government can do something for Pointe Michel. We already havent gotten nothing. We were promised money during the election just like other communities and we yet to get it. Mag way Ca alas FIX our road before it is to late.

Facts are facts! The road was always inadequate but the UWP was only in power for 4 1/2 yrs. while the current ruling party is now in its 11th. year of running the country. Frankly I don’t care, the bottom line is that we need to fix that road!!

    • Enisci
      February 25, 2011

That is the problem; everyone always wants a hand out. A logical thinking person would realize it makes no sense to patch something if your going to make it better the patch will not last as long as rebuilding or fixing the problem. Engineering/Geography 101 there is a sea wall just before PM ..and this is affecting how the waves are breaking. makes no sense to try to explain because more than half of the people reading this only care about politics. continue to argue yr after yr government after government that they not doing or they not giving or they taking. not one labor uwp freedom etc better than the other.
