PHOTO OF THE DAY: A relic of the past

There was a time when every school child in Dominica knew of or utilized these books. This one was sighted recently at the Portsmouth Hospital.

If Dominica has a museum or ever has one in the future those books along with other DA memorabilia should be placed there as exhibits.

Woah!!! I had one of those when our classroom was under a coconut tree down by Salisbury bay. Gosh!! Those good ole days when we used to be throwing stones in the mango trees to pick those sweet mangoes after school, and then we would go and steal some of MR. Norry’s plums.

      @ LawieBawie

Is Mr. Norry still alive? If he is it is not too late for you to be arrested and charged for your actions and also for trespassing. Bet the plums tasted sweet and juicy and you can still feel the taste. Happy childhood memories.

what’s wrong with digital books? we save trees, have faster and wider access to more content and information and we can even hav it on the go. and you do realise you’re using the internet right now right? way to go bashing something while using it lol

I clearly remember the Can Pads.

And what about when Coca-Cola used to encourage student to collect bottle tops and we would get the Brian Lara exercise books.

      Dominican,

Brian Lara books were recent compared to this. These exercise books were way back then…think of the days when police use to lock up rasta for dreadlocks…. then you close. :-D

As part of inculcating national pride every child should still have at least one distributed by the government/school administration.

    Lovely memories, though.

    LOL! Brings back memmories man.

I still have an old version of these old note books.

I remember back in Mix School and Boys School we use to have one called ‘Canpad’ I believe.

Man we use to fold that and put that in our back pockets. It would always be torn up, cover missing, and have dog ears. Good days man, Dominica was innocent then…

    • DPM
      September 27, 2011

DA was really innocent then. I remember during the summer gathering the kids in our neighbourhood for summer school and would buy these books and cut them in half so each child could have something to write on. I sure miss those days. Ma Pierre in Possie was famous for selling these.

  21. Hmmmm
    September 27, 2011

I have a few…….new ones too. Everyone laughs when they see me with them….they were good books.

  22. Satelite
    September 27, 2011

Wow! I had some of these too. Always used to copy on the cover to answer about the number of parishes there are in Dominica.

    • Righteous
      September 27, 2011

yes, and the times table at the back was really convenient too. I remember when parents use to cut them in half to give each child but today, they are asking a parent to give a grade one child 4 whole exercise books, can you belive it? what is a grade 1 child doing with 4 exercise books? that is putting too much financial strain on parents

      • Nix
        September 28, 2011

I know!! back in the day in primary school is half of an exercise book and half a pencil children going school with… and a 25 cents! now is $20 dollars and so parents giving their children! I was like wha! back in the day going to grammar school, all u have is $3.50, dollar to buy a soft drink and dollar to buy codfish rolls or meatpies, and 75 cents each way to catch your bus. Now children going to school well cashy! times have really changed… back in the day we were content! love the memories…

  23. hmmm
    September 27, 2011

haha! i still have one too. it’s a shame they stopped making them though :(
