nature always finds its way,now that it is low, building a wall is a positive idea, because this river used to be real monster for the people who live in that lower layou area, yea she sure have left her footprints, but with all that climate conditions going on the world today,if this rivers swell once more in time,is left to be seen.

Will someone take a present photo of the same area and post it online? (I am unable to do so) This photo does not do justice to the beautiful landscape that is seen there presently. Thanks.

This photo shows work that was ongoing at layou river a few years ago to protect the road and village form the river. Homeboy, the state of the river was due the a land slide (nothing to do with farming) which has now created one of Dominica’s largest fresh water lake. Think positive, God bless de nature Isle.

Londonican I am aware that the state of the river was due to that landslide. What are the main reasons for land slippage/ land slides. Poor soil conservation techniques on hill sides, cutting of trees, which exposes the top soil to the action of rain and wind. Te absence of trees to hold the soil together, coupled with the absence of the tree canopy causes the eventual land slides. I used to be in the Agricultural industry and I am quite aware of farming practices. The steep gradient od our land also does not help.

I am certain that there is just as much sediment in the river today as was when the construction was being done.

Although these are valid points, in this situation you’re ahead of yourself. If you knew anything about where this landslide occurred, you would not utter those words – do your research, see where the landslide came down, and I would hope you offer a retraction.

As far as the geologists’ research in the Craibbean, Dominica is the youngest of the islands. Its rugged terrain and topography account for the large number of rivers and streams.

We have the largest number of major landslides in the Caribbean, the second largest boiling lake in the world, the highest number of active volcanoes per area in the Caribbean. Sooner or later we will settle down with no more than 20 or so significant water flows [rivers] to the sea.

What you see is mainly the result of Natural processes coupled with a small [very small] factor of human intervention.

Warms I am not going to offer a reaction. Grant it that this landslide occurred where there is not much farming, my point I’d that things like this should help bring more awareness to unsustainable farming practices and activities. Google land slides in Dominica or look at some of the past articles that DNO had on landslide occurrences and there are many instances of landslides being caused by heavy rains on unprotected bare soils. So we all know that Dominica has a plethora of seismic activity that causes rock slides, but the unsustainable manner in which agriculture has been going on causes them too in times of heavy rains, especially during the hurricane season.

This is a great photo as it shows like the caption stated” the once mighty Layou”..
Let us use this as a lesson for sustainable agriculture and developmental policies. Because if we do not practice proper land management (farming/construction). Eventually we will have very few fresh water streams and rivers.

This should have been an internal/domestic photo display not an international one; and so is the comment introducing the photo. Clearly, conscious discussions are not held prior to the identification and display of the photo of the day.

What are you talking about? Is this a case of “The liberals have now become the new conservatives?” Common! Are you saying that “photo of the day” should not be an unrestricted process? What conscious discussions? It should be an unfettered process. I love my fellow Kubulians, but sometimes you guys are just caught up in the old neolithic way of thinking.

Why must this phot be portrayed as an internal issue? This is how the river looks and if someone comes to Dominica this is what they will see? You can’t hide that!!
ADMIN great choice for photo of the day as his photograph will like I said STIMULATE OUR YOUTH, leaders, and the GENERAL PUBLIC as a
Whole to realize that we have to RESPECT THE LAND. We cannot go about our daily lives as BUSINESS AS USUAL. We have to practice counter farming/ strip cultivation. We have to stop the indiscriminate cutting of trees for firewood and other luxuries, we have to plant trees in areas where they have been cut, we have to have more respect for the land. If we do not then rest assured more rivers will end up this way and all that will be left are fond memories of when we had
      All those rivers.

So don’t knock DNO or the photographer for hilighting the ills we have created, instead let’s see how we remedy the problem!
