Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Dr. Thomson Fontaine has said that he remains committed to taking the party to victory in the next general elections.
He was speaking during an interview on Q-95 ‘Talk on the Block’ program held recently.
According to him, as leader of the party, there are certain commitments in terms of attracting financing for the party, putting a public face on the party, and being able to represent the party’s interests both locally and overseas.
“There are a lot of things that I have to do, being able to talk to people, build relationships with the different potential candidates or be able to talk to people so that they can end up voting for the party,” Dr. Fontaine said. “There is a lot that goes with it and is something that when I got voted in November, I was committed to doing, and again my commitment–and I will repeat it–my commitment is to take the United Workers Party to victory in the next elections.”
He appealed to the supporters of the party and its members to all play their roles.
“There is a role for everyone, there’s a role for the party,” Dr. Fontaine urged.
Dr. Fontaine, who still holds the position of Policy Adviser to the government of South Sudan, told party supporters who have raised concerns over his employment overseas that as party leader he has not run away from Dominica.
“People make it look like I have run away from Dominica. Remember at the height of my professional career I gave that up [in 2013] to come back to Dominica and spend 4-5 years in Dominica. So, the idea that I am running away I think is just not correct,” he remarked.
He mentioned that he returned to Dominica because he was concerned about making a change in the country.
“And again, I am trying to make everybody understand that I am working while I am out, the same way I am doing what I have to do as a leader of the party whilst I am overseas,” Dr. Fontaine explained. “I have been explaining what it is that has necessitated my continuing to be in South Sudan and I still feel that I am able to do the work of the party in a way that is not jeopardizing the party.”
Furthermore, he stated that he has the support of the party.
“When I was elected as the party leader, I was not elected for one year. I was elected to take the party to the next general election and I still intend to do so and I hope that I will get the support of everybody concerned,” he stated. “I believe that’s what the focus has to be.”
He added, “Let’s not be shortsighted in our focus, let us look at the longer-term picture.”
Dr. Fontaine was elected as leader of the UWP during the party’s delegates conference held on Sunday, November 27, 2022.

So Thomson just exposed UWP’s hypocrisy by admitting that UWP have interests overseas, yet at the same time trying to deny the vote to Dominicans living abroad. You cannot have your cake and eat it Thomson. If you and your party think that it is not ethical for Dominican citizens living abroad to come and vote , why should it be ethical for your party to raise funds from abroad to enable it to participate in elections? or even exist as a party?

Dr. you all had a chance to get the free and fair elections you all wanted absent the huge influx of diaspora, and you all DROPPED THE BALL. I do understand your dilemma, but unless you get out there and get your message across to the voters, no matter how many contact you make or money you raise, it will not get you over the Skerrit hurdle.
You cannot be seen or perceived to be missing in action.
Zandoli, your point is solid. You have to be among the people who you wish to govern. Governing and watching from a distance is problematic. How much inroads can you make with voters who have never seen you in person?

Take care of business in Sudan first where the population lives in poverty, no jobs, gloomy outlook, crimes are the order of the day and your Fontainomics just does not work. How can people of Dominica allow you to take them to victory at the next general elections when your economics just does not add up. You are yet to lift the people of Sudan out of poverty for all these years you have been there. You do not have the stamina, the charisma, to take people anywhere but to Grand Fond, another forgotten village that Skerrit is trying to jump start from its backwardness. Your Fontainomics just does not calculate. How can you not forget your open people when you have achieved nothing in poor Sudan? The honourable doctor is living in a dream world. Dr Skerritt plans to give all passport holders (the CBI ones :)), the right to vote at the next election. My rough guess is that there are around at least 2 million of them floating about the world which means that Skerro will have the next election on a plate and indeed, all future elections.
