Former UWP leader encourages people to present evidence of voting irregularities

Supporters listen intently to the UWP’s presentation

Former United Workers Party (UWP) leader Edison James is encouraging UWP supporters to come forward and present evidence and statements of voting irregularities in the December 6th General Election to the Court.

He made that call at a meeting in Castle Bruce on Sunday.

The UWP filed a petition in court, challenging results of the December 6th general election in ten constituencies.

They want the Court to declare the results in the constituencies of St. Joseph, Mahaut, Morne Jaune, La Plaine, Castle Bruce, Salybia, Roseau Valley, Roseau Central, Roseau South and Wesley, null as they believed that there were many instances of voting irregularities.

James says that the court matter is vital to the party and he is confident the judgement will go in their favour.

“I am very confident that the UWP have a very good chance of having the election over turn[ed]”, he said.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said that the latest court matter is a distraction to his cabinet. “Now we have to be distracted with engaging lawyers…all sorts of vexatious and sensational matters that we have to spend time reading instead of focusing,” Skerrit said.

However, James believes that the petition is necessary as it provides the opportunity to have the results of the election overturned.

Meantime, the General Secretary of the UWP Nicholas George said there will soon be a court inquiry into the Salisbury incident.

Nicholas George File Photo

He too also encouraged residents to be “brave and come out to give evidence”.

“The Marigot incident will be address[ed] but Salisbury cries for attention”, he added.

Days leading up to the general elections in December, residents of Salisbury were tear-gassed in the early hours of the morning.

A number of people were reportedly affected by the fumes, including children and the elderly.

There were also reports that gunshots were heard and at least three people received non-life-threatening bullet wounds.

The police never accepted responsibility for the gunshots because according to them, no live rounds of ammunition were used in Salisbury.

The tear gas and gunshots are believed to be retaliation by police for the blocking of roads by Salisbury residents.

Marigot residents also blocked roads in protest, aimed at the implementation of electoral reform before the general elections.

The December 6th elections occurred on schedule without electoral reform taking place.

Skerrit this is how it goes and this is how you gonna take it. We need to be following and watching you as you continue to reduce our people and country to begging and poverty. Skerrit has failed us and our Dominica big time. This man is not developmentally focused, he is spontaneous into fast food matters that affects one who eats food that has no substance in it. That is how we see this failed Labour government. They have big talk and fanfare but no value into structured planning to raise the profile of our people and our Dominica. Skerrit and his failed Labour government are unable to pursue. They lack focus, lack resilience, lack purpose of role of government as we see the abuse of our resources. Skerrit Go

I am very convinced that these UWP jokers are hurt that they did not win the election. They are all sogoflies and bumbum flies. They just wont accept it that they lost heavily and badly, 18 – 3. Nobody wants UWP people in government and nobody supports UWP. I think Eddison James has the bird flu or the mad cow disease. They burnt down Marigot and he did condone such behavior. What more do these jokers and their supporters want? We need a handsome and intelligent leader like the late Maurice Bishop. No school drop outs. No politicians who call emergency conferences to air their dirty laundry like Joshua Francis. Ask for Issac, he reminds me of some lost love and Nicholas George, he is another batiman. Five more years of Labour and another 5 more years of Labour. You all cannot take it. You all want some of that CBI money? When next you all come to America, stop at Garfinckels, Macys, Hects, Saks 5 avenue, and buy yourselves some professional white and coloured dress shirts.

Unfortunately when Columbus saw our lovely piece of land he immediately realized that we are Dummies and so named us DOM-inica. But even worse, almost 600 years later we still proving that we are indeed worthy of our name “DOM” (Dumb) that refuse to read so we could know and understand how to catch up with others around us. After listening to local talk shows and reading the comments of some of you it is clear that we are really DUMB! No wonder Skerrit, Tony and others feel free to do what they want and run things their way. What is happening in Dominica today wouldn’t happen in Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent or NOwhere except in Dumb-in-i-ca! Boy we finish. I give up on this country. All hope gone. I am minded to support your comments on the callous manner in which Dominicans treat matters or state and governance. However, your insult of me and my people will not be tolerated. Some of us who moved to the USA are under the impression that virtue of our move we are immediately transformed to super geniuses and Dominicans who stay home are idiots and it’s upsetting. They live there and know the situation on the ground. I have said here a million times that UWP strategy is wrong and they will pay at the polls and we saw it.
There was no stealing of any elections. The results reflected poor strategy and lack of funds to match up their rival. I warned about criticizing Skerrit too much and gave the examples of Donald Trump, Keith Rowley and Mia Mottley. It is old fashion politics with no place in the modern world. Deal with substance and you will see the difference. Contrary to what you think Dominica are very intelligent.

    January 23, 2020

I saw @ Unknown and some other brainless doctors blaming the UWP for contesting the election ; but as a former cricketer let me use a cricket analogy to help you guys understand what is happening.
As we speak U19 cricket World Cup is on the way and let me congratulate the Windies youth for winning all three games they have played convincingly! But say West Indies is scheduled to play South Africa tomorrow and reports from our team management and others indicates that South Africa have already put everything in place to steal the game, what do you think West Indies should do, don’t show up for the game or still play it and allow the world and ICC to see the game was stolen? I can tell you that if windies does not show up, not only would they forfeit the points but, they would be fined and maybe even be banned for not showing. But if they played the game and it was stolen, it would be on ICC to thoroughly investigate the game and either prove the game was stolen or it was FAIR

      January 23, 2020

@former cricketer, you should have stuck to playing cricket rather than trying to be a political analyst. Your analogy is s**t. How can you compare a game of cricket to a general election? For a start, a game of cricket involves two teams of eleven players and two umpires. Both teams get to play under the same conditions. The team that perform best with bat and ball will eventually win the game. In a general election there are multiple parties and a full voting population taking part in the process. The party that is more persuasive in winning the majority of the votes from the voting population wins the election. This is simple to comprehend. Based on the results of the last election, the labor party was a lot more persuasive in convincing people that they were the party to take the country forward. Linton and UWP did not have a convincing enough message, just a whole lot of Goobledygook in their manifesto.

    • January 23, 2020

And what is your point mister Cricketer sir? Lennox and his gang were saying all along, “no electoral reform no election” people are saying that they should have kept their word.

Up to today, you are reading the UWP have no idea what they are going up against, calling for a 10 constituency vote inquiry; and yet they are begging their supporters to volunteer the testimonies–what kind of testimony would those people have? They just keep on setting their own trap.

How is your story compared with that situation?

Lennox would have done himself a favor not contesting the election. Right now he would not be stuck with an embarrassing 18-3 defeat, much worse than if he had given PM Skerrit the win “on a platter–good Lord!

How appropriate, the photos showing the UWP back in School. Now its time to move on, this going to court with the present administration when they have all the big boys in their back pocket, will not go anywhere. You can’t fight for a people who don’t want to be rescued! So it’s best to just be still.

      January 23, 2020

@ just saying, I understand your point but the bible you quoted NEVER asked us to do nothing. In fact the passage you quoted in Exodus 14:14 is rightly quoted but you should have read the verses prior to verse 14 to understand that God instructed them to do some things before He spoke in verse 14. FYI I quoted the first 4 verses so you could see that God always wants us to do something, take steps so He could have something to work with:

14:1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea.

3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.

4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord. And they did so.

      • January 23, 2020

@Evangelist for the first time you have positive thumbs from me. I was going to respond to “just saying” to remind him/her that the Lord doesn’t just fight for us, like waving a magic wand; we have to use our muscles too–but He will give us the strength which He knows we need.

Skerritt can say what he wants about being distracted. Has he forgotten that the appeal court advised the opposition to appeal the election results if they were satisfied that there were irregularities. Therefore if Skerritt has a problem then it should be with the courts not the opposition. Had he not engaged in shenanigans to win those constituencies then he wouldn’t have had anything to be distracted about.

We need decency in our Dominica and our government and if this immature political clown Skerrit and his failed corrupted Labour government are not sufficiently mature enough to understand the functions and decency of good government then Skerrit inept leader of this failed DLP must get out and go read a book about decency in politics. Disrespect for entities of government started under his administration, Dominicans kicked you out of office after 4 years as an example to you and your party and you all are only trying to find a way back into office to wreck havoc once more. I think of Dominica where our ambassadors like Vince Henderson and that selfish Bannis Robert, who are both residing in the US, are there helping Skerrit corrupt and steal our election, while they are enjoying the the beauty of real Democracy in the US. Boy is things like this that make me wish I was God because surely I would deal with these people and their likes, in such a way that they would pray for God to take them. As someone who voted in the Dec 6 event all I will say is that thing was free and fair then Americans and Democrats should immediately stop that ongoing impeachment of Donald Trump because as bad and wrong what Trump did was, what we saw in Dominica was far, far worse. The only difference is in the case of Trump even his own appointees called him out just to protect their democracy, while in Dominica even non supporters of Skerrit took his bribe ahead of protecting our democracy. As for those in the US that were bribed to come and vote for Skerrit, should all call on congress and the Senate to STOP the impeachment of Trump because what they did to help Skerrit steal the election was same in nature or even worse than what Trump did. I’m not a big fan of the DLP method of governance. I too wanted electoral reform prior to the last election.

Brain, if someone threatened to steal your money at the bank would you rather keep your money at home or still put it at the bank? I would rather put it in the bank and let the bank be responsible for my money. The UWP did just that and now it is left to our state, constitution, and the justice system to take responsibility to ensure that our stolen election and democracy be returned to us. Say what all you want and do what all you want but the world is watching and taking notes.

The election was Free and FEAR but definitely not free and fair. Why should Haitians that running from their country be paid and get our passport to vote DLP, decide our election? How could it be fair when So many Haitians in Possie and in North of Dominica voted in Roseau Central only to be out of Dominica, that resided in Dominica for less than four months, were allowed to vote and either a day after or a week after the election they were out? Yet so many Haitians residing here for 10, 15, 20 yrs were not given passport and not allowed to register? Skerrit stole that flipping election and if they don’t refuse that election, I for sure will not waste time vote again.

The theft of the election was so blatant, in your face and so careless that every single lawyer and judge that cares about democracy and free and fair election that they should just reject that result so we could have free elections again. I voted labor and will still vote DLP but based on what I know the election was not fair

@ free and fair, your ,last sentence is laughable. You all UWP supporters continue to walk around with eyes closed, you all will continue to lose.

While every legal means must be explored to verify the authenticity of the elections; however, the expectation of success in the CCJ is tantamount to putting ice on the surface of the sun and not expecting it to melt.

As violence was initiated in Dominica’s elections, if not challenged, then the entire electoral process and maybe more, could spiral into a Jamaican like paradigm for which we could all be sorry. Dominica is a pristine paradise as highlighted by CNN, and greed and victimization cannot be allowed to become the order of the day such that it would alter that pristine classification.

Peace thus far, has been the resident political and social order of Dominica’s politics and socialization. For a politician to indicate her hit men are ready, this language introduced intimidation or violence in the political theater. Therefore to avert the current political trajectory, the lawsuit must proceed even if to show our children, there is always an alternative to violence.

I did not recognize the Jack A*S of the year(blasting) at the meeting!>
Nicholas George, you forget to mention the number of people coming from the diaspora that were TERRORIZED in Marigot by Brian and his gang. Some people had to drag their luggage for miles because transportation was deprived of any form of access to and from the airport.
How about the fires they set and the blocking of the government roads?
How about the insults and TERRORIZING on the bishop?
You forget all that took place days before the election.

James should call on Dominicans to report iregularities, not just UWP supporters. Mr. James should also talk about the Intimidation of Labour party supporters in Marigot including threats of violence and physical attacks. The UWP has been out of office since 2000 and they are still suffering from loss of power syndrome. By the way I thought they had the evidence, why are they now begging people to come forward with evidence and at the same time saying that they are going to prevail in the courts. Madness!!!

When will UWP accept the fact they made major blunders leading up to the election? The mixed messages, candidates who had no chance of winning. Nicholas George rather than talking crap, why didn’t you advise your teammates to choose a more attractive candidate than yourself? You know you couldn’t win that seat but yet you did not give a more vibrant, marketable person the opportunity. Not to mention the candidate choice for Portsmouth. We all knew that Monelle had taken some actions to her detriment, why did you allow her to contest? All the scandals about Joshua, yet you presented him to the people. I am one who paid my way to the polls to vote against Joshua. I can assure you that your case has no weight and you are just losing support as the days go by. I have written here before that a new party will form and will outshine you. UWP has erred way too many times, you have been discarded!

This sounds like Trump talking about voting irregularity.
UWP is repeating the same mistakes them made between 2015 and 2019. Just wasting time on things only their core supporters care about. Go ahead and lets review the results in 2024.

@zandoli – Oh, so is only the UWP core supporters that care about doing things the right way and about honesty & integrity by those in public office. Hmmm, interesting………..(troubling)…………frightening if that’s really the case.

What then do you care about?
