The Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Public Works, Public Utilities and Digital Economy in collaboration with israAID, the Dominica State College (DCS), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has successfully launched Cohort 4 of Work Online Dominica freelance training.
The launching ceremony took place at the Dominica State College (DSC) on Wednesday.
Senior Program Officer of IsraAID-Dominica, Cornealia Guiste-Durand who was addressing the ceremony described the program as a pioneer initiative that aims to empower the individual and transform the future of work in Dominica.
“The Work Online Dominica Freelance Training has been precisely designed to provide comprehensive guidance and support, ensuring that participants acquire the essential skills required to excel in the digital realm. From refining their expertise in various fields, to understanding the degrees of effective client communication,” she said.
She continued, “With the launch of Work Online Dominica Freelance Training Program we are paving the way to a future where talent knows no boundaries, where innovation thrives, and where the people of Dominica will flourish in the digital age.”
According to her, freelancing has emerged as a powerful and flexible alternative, enabling individuals to harness their skills, work remotely and unlock their full potential.
Furthermore, Guiste-Durand said this initiative is not just about individual empowerment, it’s about fueling economic growth and creating a thriving ecosystem within Dominica.
“By nurturing a community of skilled freelancers we envisioned a future where remote will become a driving force behind the country’s progress,” she stated.
She pointed out that freelancers will no longer contribute to the local economy, but also establish Dominica as a hub for global talent and expertise.
As the participants embarked on this transformative journey, she encouraged them to seize this opportunity with open minds and eager hearts.
“This program will equip you with the tools to shape your own destiny, to break free from conventional limitations, and to embrace the boundless opportunities of the digital landscape,” Guiste-Durand noted.
If working online is directly related to working from the home environment it certainly could revolutionise all aspects of life in Dominica. It could eliminate all the wasted time and expense of traveling to and from work, and it could solve many of the problems associated with parenting.
However, two things are needed for the system to work effectively: a reliable internet access and a dedicated home working space.
The current “housing revolution” has totally overlooked the need for a such a space. And the need is not limited to those working online. Craft workers, dress makers, designers, etc., also work from home.
Yes, stay at home parenting could be more of a reality and it would be good for children and families to be raised my their moms instead of a daycare worker
