Government assistance underway for residents on east coast affected by trough system in ’22

Damage on east coast by trough system

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that residents in the eastern district who were affected by a trough system in November 2022 are receiving income support from his government.

He made the announcement during a press briefing on Monday morning.

“The government promised it would assist affected residents with income support and I am happy to report that this process is well underway,” he said. “Four hundred dollars ($400) provided to households of 1 to 2 members and $750 provided to households of more than 2 members.”

He continued, “As of March 7, 2023 payments have been made to Petite Soufriere and San Sauveur from a total of 162 households, 145 paid. Castle Bruce, Tranto, Dipax, from 99 households affected, 84 paid, Good Hope, from 128 households affected, 102 paid.”

Prime Minister Skerrit wishes to thank the World Food Programme (WFP) which has been partnering with his government in this venture.

Individuals in these communities who have not collected payments are advised to first verify eligibility with their respective village councils.

“They will be advised further how they can collect payments,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Skerrit said on the matter of relocation the government is moving swiftly ahead.

“And very soon the cabinet will be in a position to advise the public on concrete actions we have taken,” he noted.

Furthermore, he stated that a committee is in place to advance the process and has already developed draft eligibility requirements as well as a relocation plan for review by the cabinet.

“We have taken a firm decision to relocate the most vulnerable members of these affected communities and we are working towards this objective,” Skerrit said.

Equally important is for the government to investigate the cause of the landslide.

This will involve commissioning a detailed geotechnical report. May I suggest that while the specialists are on island, they extend their study to Antrim and Petite Savane. The government will then have a better understand has to how such calamities can be avoided.

For the most part, they are not caused by an Act of God or Quirks of Nature, but by the Folly of Man.
